CrossOver Office for Intel Macs Enters Alpha

sHARD>>

We've recently recieved word that CrossOver Office for Intel Macs has hit alpha 1, and has been made availible for limited public testing. It comes as a standard OS X package, and, while it requires X11, it appears that CodeWeavers is working to eliminate this dependency. After installation, users simply click on a Windows .exe file to launch it. CrossOver Office has a sort of start menu which resembles it's Windows counter-part, allowing users to easily launch installed Windows software. Reportedly, CrossOver Office will also support the creation of a Macintosh application wrapper of sorts. This allows for Windows programs to appear in your standard Applications window. While games aren't working well yet, it seems that Office applications are fairly functional. Half-Life 2 also appears to be a development support priority. Rounding it out, cut and paste sharing, as well as Windows applications on the dock, appear to work. While this software is still alpha and obviously experiences it's share of crashes and kernel panics, this strong feature list is very promising. More details as we have them...

bluedragon - For me it's not working to install newleecher. Can you give me your settings or tell me what you did to install it ? thanx

The error i get: Dll missing File gdiplus.dll error 126

Yeah, I got that error with NewsLeecher 3.7, but it installs OK with 3.5. Not much difference between the two versions other than the bandwidth limiter anyway. I have had some crashes with it though, so I'm back to running NewsLeecher inside Windows 2000 in Parallels. By the way, I just tried installing NewsLeecher 3.7 in a virgin copy of Windows 2000 (without any updates) and got exactly the same error.

I just don't understand the Crossover Office people?

If it "Sales and Marketing" they are after, You got get the beta out to the masses. ie: beta junkies/techie that have the time to try the proggy out. Crossover Office in it wizdom has closed the door.

In fact I couldn't find anything about the OSX beta version at all!

It's not a beta yet, it's still (VERY MUCH) an alpha, and most companies don't release their alphas beyond a very select few testers. Perhaps that is why they are limiting the number of people they give access to it right now. I'm sure that once it hits beta they will have something about it on their web site.

For those that don't yet have it: ...

EDIT: Well, my "warez" link was pulled down. It wasn't warez. There was no licensing agreement of any kind and it never said not to distribute it either.

International copyright prevents the free distribution of any copyrighted work without permission from the author. The author has permission to distribute their own beta...duh. However, you do not have this permission, and thus, as they have reserved all rights, you cannot freely distribute this work. Therefore, it is warez. Just to clarify.

OK, found out how to fix this. Apparently this gdiplus.dll issue is a nagging one with many people running Windows 2000 (and of course Crossover/Wine since they emulate that environment). The solution (courtesy of someone in the NewsLeecher forums) is to download a copy of the dll file and place it in the NewsLeecher folder along with the NewsLeecher EXE file. In my case this was in /Users/username/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/win2000/drive_c/Program Files/NewsLeecher/ and it should be in a similar place on your system (depending on your username and the name of the bottle you installed it in). You can get the dll file from here (be sure to unzip it before placing it in the NewsLeecher folder): http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?gdiplus

NewsLeecher 3.7 now runs, but I haven't tested it thoroughly yet.

Does anyone know how to make the win2000 bottle report that its really Windows XP? I didn't see how to change that in the GUI. I would like to see how many XP only apps would run under the Win2k Bottle.

OH...and thank God, Agent runs! I'm a happy Mac switcher but I just don't see how the Mac folks got along without a kick @ss Usenet reader for such a long time. :-)

Most hard-core Mac usenet users would take exception to that statement. Up until a couple of years ago when Brian Clark abandoned it, Mac users had an excellent newsreader in Thoth. It still runs well, but is showing it's age now since it is only a PPC binary, which sometimes has problems with memory leaks on Intel Macs. Thoth is actually as good as or better than Agent, but it's interface takes some getting used to if you come from using a multi-pane program like Agent. Its multi-window approach is definitely more Mac-like though, and really comes into its own with a high res screen.

To be honest, I'm not sure where to begin with what you've said. I'm sorry but Thoth isn't even in the same league as Agent. While their GUI approaches are different, Thoth really limits you on how you interact with posts and headers. The lack of complex scripting, dynamic filtering, limited USP connections (4), advanced group/header searching, nzb support, advanced spam/sporge controls, well, the list just goes on. It just feels like an app that is stuck in the 90s. But you are right about one thing, it has more windows than you can shake a stick at.

Really, I'm not criticizing you but I believe you just haven't had any long term experience with Agent. I mean Agent has had over 10 years to mature and Thoth only lived for a short time. :-)

Luckily, Agent works under Crossover and there has been some interest in porting Agent 4 (which is in beta) to OS X.

Cheers,

-P

Um, how about Crossover office? (If you want to argue about newsagents, make a new thread, please).

I'm not having a lot of luck with it, and their beta support never replies to me.
