Nokia has started to take control of Apple's iPhone situation by starting a campaign against them. The campaign was the posting of worded adds in New York City this past weekend. As Apple had warned, the software patch disabled versions of the Apple handset that had been unlocked to operate on wireless carries other than AT&T. The update added a few new features like the Wi-Fi iTunes Music Store. However, the update destroyed on a number unmodified iPhones and those iPhones which had been only modified to run third-party software applications but had otherwise remained locked to AT&T(like mine). Users who wanted to get help with their phone were turned away in the same manner as those users who had unlocked the devices against Apple's stated policy.

Apple's stance was met with outrage because, unlike unlocking, users who had installed third-party applications (like myself) simply to increase the usefulness of their pricey handsets. In addition, to those who had done nothing at all were suddenly being informed that they had voided their warranty on the iPhone and that they could not help them.

iPhone = Form over function

But how did you know that I take crazy pills???

Well as long as the current status quo from AT&T and Apple is maintained i'm inclined to agree with you.

However, the iPhone has the potential to be the most amazing thing since, well, anything.

Didn't those morons, waiting overnight in the freezing cold and paying for an overpriced, useless, locked gadget, say the same thing back in July?

Maybe I've been exceptionally lucky with AT&T but my previous phone (Samsung A707) was pretty open. No features were locked or restricted. I could download any 3rd party apps I wanted, install any ringtones and so on. Bluetooth sync and file transfer worked out the box, no special software or carrier-supplied programs. Needing 3rd party uploaders to get past restrictions is unacceptable, hence my frustration with the iPhone- but that's a problem with Apple, not AT&T. There's not even an AT&T logo to be seen on the iPhone.

May I also add that the VZW and AT&T SmartPhones with Windows Mobile 6 are virtually unlocked?

I'll take a locked iPhone over a Windows mobile phone any day.

Just because Apple's being a bunch of pricks doesn't change the fact that they'll get them unlocked again and everybody'll be happy. Should you have to keep unlocking it? No. But it is what it is.
