All-new Mac mini released featuring HDMI and GeForce 320M graphics

After over 5 years with the same enclosure, the Mac mini has finally been given a well-deserved overhaul with an all-new aluminium uni-body enclosure which is smaller in volume by 20% than the previous Mac mini enclosures.

The new Mac mini is also the first Mac ever to include a built-in HDMI port, a move which directly addresses the Home Theatre PC (HTPC) market.

 

The graphics processor has been updated to the same GeForce 320M as used in the MacBook and MacBook Pro lines. Memory can now be upgraded to 8GB and is a user-installable part, thanks to a new base which can twist off from underneath the Mac mini, allowing easy access to the RAM.

 

The new Mac mini is available for order today and is priced at $649 for the standard model, and $999 for the server model which features dual 500GB hard drives and Mac OS X Server. In the UK, the same models cost £649 and £929 respectively; a particularly unfavourable exchange rate.

Due sono le versioni che Apple propone: Mac mini in versione "client" con sistema operativo Mac OS X Snow Leopard e suite iLife, al prezzo di 799,00 Euro comprensivi di IVA, e Mac mini in versione "server" con Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server (con processore Intel Core 2 Duo da 2,66GHz, senza unità ottica e con doppia unità di storage da 500GB a 7200rpm) al prezzo di 1149,00 Euro, IVA inclusa.

And unless I get redirected to the special "super Apple markup" page... it's $699 US not $649 as indicated in the post.

 

That being said (and currency exchange issues notwithstanding) it's still a great price for a device of this form factor. I don't care what OS it runs... you simply cannot put together a better HTPC system that is as compact, powerful and quiet for less money. I for one will pick up one later today and am considering picking up a couple of them. After all, it's only a little more than 2 PS3's but is much more suited to use as a media device. Stack one on top of a couple of Iomega external drives and you've got a great 2.5TB media server that takes almost no power in standby and looks sexy next to the big plasma. :P (Not that I think the PS3 doesn't work well - but I've had several and they are always loud as hell... while my Mini is nearly silent all the time).

 

Still wish it had been the same size (for extra cooling) and came with a quad-core i5/i7 mobile option... but hey... they have to give buyers some reason to pay the extra for a MBP or iMac.

The prices are crazy..

I can't really seem to be able to find a reason for the $100 bump in price. Sure it does have better components, but shouldn't the old components get cheaper over time so the new ones come in at ~ the same price? It's a really nice machine, I own an older model, so it wouldn't really put me off, I'm just wondering where that extra $ is going to.

 

On a side note, $300 more gets you the base MacBook which has the same components just a smaller hard drive. Does that $300 cover the keyboard, mouse, screen, camera, battery, - the hard drive difference? Or is Apple charging slightly more for the base (cpu, ram, etc) in the Mini?

iirc, there is some kind of weird European tax on things like that. But don't quote me because my memory is very shoddy on this.

 

In the meantime, HOLY SEX LEG! I have a good excuse to use this for a home entertainment center. It's now so much easier.

I'm so proud of Apple for adding HDMI! Big step in compatibilty! Finally! A living room Mac!

 

imho there is no reason for the price of that thing! Too expensive! Moreover here in italy will be more expensive than in usa. They're crazy!
