I keep getting the same error when trying to install SP1 for Vista. Just before finishing the installation (100%) it stops with an error and reverts the whole process.

I have tried many suggestions with no success: disabling Antivirus-software, 3rd party firewalls, Nokia PC-suite...

Now I read one case where somebody with the same problems and error code (80004005) stated that it might have something to do with the Vista bootloader being updated by SP1. The whole process might fail if you have a dual-boot configuration (e.g. with Linux or OS X) and/or if you are using 3rd party bootloaders.

Has anyone of you already tried SP1 RTM and faced the same problems?

Why are you installing it so early out of curiosity? It won't be available through Windows update or Microsoft.com until mid-March. I really can't help, but I suspect that the problem may be due to having OS X on the same hard drive.

You answered the question yourself.

I know. Microsoft staff has confirmed that the March-version won't differ from the current RTM, so I expect the same problems later on.

Ok.

That's what I suspect too.

I have Vista and installed SP1 RC. I had the computer Dual Booted at the time (with Ubuntu) and it worked fine for me. Ubuntu is on a seperate hard drive as Vista, as is Leopard (now that it is installed). I did a "repair" of Vista at one point which didn't mess anything up with the service pack or bootloader, I am using GRUB. I have a Dell XPS.

Colonel: I hate how that title bar takes up so much real estate... so much space wasted...

lol. I don't mind it. Besides, that Window is only up there for a few seconds right after you reboot after installing SP1.

It's not just that window. A lot of windows do that. I'll post screenshots when I get to work today since my office machine is Vista Business (although I could easily Mac-ify it as the hardware is compatible for pc_efi and OS X).

EDIT: Ok, so maybe I found just that one, but if that one is like that, how many more waste space?

Finally managed to install SP1! In the beginning, also the final release of SP1 didn't install successfully and the installation rolled back at 100%...

The problem was indeed the dualboot installation of having both OS X and Vista on one drive. When I moved Vista from second primary partition to first primary partition and marked it as "active", SP1 finally managed to install...

This is my configuration:

2 Seagate 320GB SATA hard disks on ICH8R in AHCI mode

Both disks MBR and only primary partitions

1st HDD:

1 NTFS - Windows XP SP2, Active (Also holds Vista Boot Manager)

2nd HDD:

1 HFS+ - Leopard 10.5.2, PC_EFI 8.0 bootloader, Active

2 NTFS - No OS, used for extra storage

3 NTFS - Windows Vista Ultimate (now SP1)

Boot selection via Vista Boot Manager menu.

As shown in the list, I installed Vista SP1. Didn't run into any problems.

Thanks for posting your configuration. I was using the Darwin bootloader instead of the one from Vista, so that might have been the source of the problem.

Yes i also had this problem and the solution was to set the vista partition active. Vista don't like the darwin loader.

Thanks for confirming that this was the problem for the failed SP1 installation.

Let's hope that others with a similar problem will find this topic and benefit from the information that was posted.

its because of this KB935509 update. its an update for bitlocker which needs access to mbr. if u use an linux bootmanager, this update failes and vista sp1 fails too

Hmm, that's strange, since I am running Vista Home Premium which doesn't require KB935509.

As far as I know, KB935509 is only available for Vista Ultimate and Vista Enterprise.

But you are right in that KB935509 changes the bootloader, so it might in fact cause problems on some dualboot configurations.

youre right too, bitlocker is only for the ultimate version. but it seems like the other versions have also problems when having another bootloader active.
