I monitor my systems background processes, keep md5 hashes of important files and compare them from time to time, have important data encrypted and backupped. Also I check with security advisories regulary.

Wouldn't it just be easier to install a security suite? :P

Ha ha lol

But you don't have to browse to virus infected sites (although thats one way) to get infected. Drive by downloads are popular these days especially with the MPack hacker tool which easily lets n00bs that want to infect peoples computers load a website with a bunch of exploits and drive by downloads designed to affect a variety of browsers, systems, etc.

It would be easier, yes. :D

But three benefits come to my mind right now, to do it manually.

1. you learn something

2. your system doesn't get slown down

3. you can trust yourself more than anyone else (regarding the topic)

On the business network, I make sure everyone is on Norton AV CORPORATE EDITION.

It works wonders... definitions are automatically updated, and it doesn't nag you. Like ever. If it find a virus, it lets you know that the file is is quarantine. And that only ever happens when checking email (the only place from which we have ever gotten virii (which are always quickly picked up).

I recommend it to everyone and anyone. Hell, with Vista, we haven't gotten anything yet. Although the one person for whom I've installed Vista for HATES it. He wants XP back...

So I say use NAV Corporate. It's slick. Set it and forget it type of experience.

well the last time Norton was any good was around OS 8.6 so...long time ago.

I have stumbled accross Norton Anti-bot which i must say im likeing and the only thing branded by Mr. Norton that i would recommend anyone use.....and thats on xp

I dream of a world in which everyone can look at all the free porn they want with no fear of getting a virus.

That is why I use a mac.

That is also why anti-virus is good.
