someone please explain how this works?

Radeon 9200s use the RV280 chips, and Radeon 8500s use the R200 chips. surely the 8500 kext won't work on the newer 280-chip 9200s?

And also, the 9200s are DX8.1 cards, and I was under the impression that Quartz and Core only worked on DX9 cards (9500-9800)? Or is that just for the Mac PCI versions?

Confused and agitated (too much coffee lol)

ATiRadeon8500.kext works on the following cards (PPC macs): ATi Radeon 8500, 9000, 9200. The Radeon's that I just mentioned support Quartz Extreme ONLY, not Core Image, because they don't have Shader 2.0 units on-chip.

so it should, in theory, work? I enter my card ID into radeon8500.kext, and then i can't boot up. this happened with the 1.4.3 kext, and with the new 1.4.4 kext. Did you manage to get it to work on your 9200?? Did you change anything apart from radeon8500? and does using i386 to make the card AGP affect this? should I leave it as a PCI card?

nah, can't get it to work. I uploaded all the Radeon8500 kexts (modified with card ID), and the supporting files (IOgraphicsfamily etc), and removed the i386 kext (just in case). But I just get 'family matching failed'.

If i install the i386 kext (the AGP fix), i get lots of errors about IOPCIfamily, IOgraphicsfamily, IOdrvsupport. Although it DOES try to load Radeon8500, which it didn't with i386 and the 1.4.3 drivers.

Seems like the i386 agp text doesn't work with the new drivers. IF it was redone/rewritten for the new drivers then maybe it would work. dunno.

for the moment i've gone back to i386/AGP and the 1.4.3 drivers - i get 'vga compatible" and no Quartz, but hell its better than nothing ;)

aha.... progress, of sorts. I was reading a thread over here:

http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/lofiversio....php/t8948.html

apparently, only Radeon 9200s with a device ID of 5961 work. if you card has a device ID of 5964 (like mine) it won't work on OSX (unless you hack the card and give it the ID of 5961)

So I'll hunt about and see if I can change the ID of the card, and then report back if it actually works (would be nice)

tried all the new 1.4.4 drivers and supporting kexts. my system profile still says "no kext loaded, Quartz and Core unsupported@, but if I do a kextstat i get that the Radeon8500 is loaded, so thats some progress anyhow lol

Interesting, if slightly off topic, I tried this program (which is a unibin)

My kextless Quartz and Coreless card passed the first 4 OpenGl tests, which is something at least :) That, combined with the fact that I can see the Quartz-test patterns on Xbench, means SOMETHING is working. Gah, I'm just going to buy a new card I think, this 9200 malarky is starting to bug me :)
