I'm able to get Leopard up and running on my eVGA 680i...but when I try to install Golden.zip and then the update to 10.5.1 (via .NetRoller's tut), I'm greeted with a flashing "can't find mach_kernal".

When I installed the Update, I couldn't find half of the files that he had mentioned to exclude. Any ideas? I downloaded the update from Apple.com and even did a search inside the package for some of the files, but couldn't find them. Until I figure out what's going on, I'll be sticking with an un-updated and un-golden.zip patched Leo :(

Another problem... :D

I installed JaS 10.4.8 on an IDE drive, during installation I choosed only the intel patch because there weren't drivers for my vga (Ati X850XT). All gone fine, but at the first starting it gave me a wonderful grey screen with an apple on it and a message "You need to restart your computer...". Where is the problem now? I cannot understand! :P

Alpha. u that have the same mb, what tiger did u use? Jas 10.4.8?
Jas 10.4.8 SSE2 SSE3 PPF1 + PPF2

I have the same problem. I've tried just about everything, but no luck. I have yet to update the BIOS (new update out 10/3/2007), but I'm not sure if it would have any impact on the Golden patch.

Did you reboot in -x or -v mode? You still need to do that after installing the OS.

That is another of my problems! I can't write anything during the boot! I press F8 but it doesn't work. So it starts always without any flags. I really can't understand!

Hmmmm. one thing I do to make sure I'm able to boot with a flag is to keep hitting F8 shortly after the boot from DVD prompt appears. Make sure the DVD is not in the drive, though.

Tried the Golden, but still no success. Slightly different results, though. I get a Do Not Enter sign at the grey apple screen. Anybody know what this means? Any suggestions as to hot to fix it?

Thanks,

Gator

Do not enter?...never heard ot it lol patch complete successfully? lil more detail

The problem I was having with the patch was two-fold:

  1. I didn't rename the XXX to my username
  2. And I didn't fully unzip the files to my desktop. Make sure that you have two folders (one name "files" and one named "ext" on your desktop. I was just putting the folder "golden" on my desktop.

I took care of these two things and am now running the patch w/ all 4 cores enabled. I'll do the 10.5.1 update later today and let you know how that goes.

On another note, does anyone know how to check to see if my cores are actually being used? Under "About this Mac" it says 2.4ghz Unknown. Thanks.

I'm pretty certain I did both (I know I renamed to my username).

BTW: Do you use the long user name (say, Alpha Gator - with the space) or the short user name (like AlphaGator). I've been using the long user name.

You have to use the short form. My username is Kevin, so I used kevin. The easiest way to tell if it worked (don't restart at the end of patching) is to scroll up in terminal and see if you get errors at the mach_kernal phase. If you do, then you have something named wrong. Usually the error will be something like: "Cannot find file...". I hope that helps.

I've had mach_kernel problems every time I've tried to install the patch. That bit of info helps a lot and could be the root (no pun intended) of my problems.

Yeah, I tried updating with the Golden Patch twice previously and just got the flashing "Can't find mach_kernal" error. This last time, I slowed down and noticed that when I ran the 9a581PostPatch.sh file I got lots of errors, a majority of them being: "Can't find...". I took a look, and sure enough, they weren't pointing to the right place. Then I dug into the actual readme that comes with the Golden.zip and renamed XXX with kevin. I ran the file again and still had problems. Then I realized that I had unzipped "Golden" to my desktop, but hadn't moved it's contents to my desktop, so instead of : /desktop/leopatch/ as my directory, I had /desktop/Golden/leopatch.....moving the files and getting rid of the Golden folder fixed everything.

Now, I have Leopard running w/ everything except 10.5.1 patch and my network card, but I'll tackle those when I get off work. I hope that helps.

Hi all.

I'm new to posting but i've been reading this site for quite a while. I finally succedded in installing a Leo 10.5.1 from scratch with sound working but i can't get my 8800 GTS to work.

I've been reading at NetRoller3D method which is the same that Weekender has explained at post #244 of this thread.

I changed all the files with the ID i got from the System Profiler, and, still following the method, i finally got a cpuid.txt to patch the nvdaresman.kext.

I've done that as well and moved it back from /System/Library/Extensions/backup to /System/Library/Extensions. Changed the perms and owner. Repaired perms with disk utility. Tried to reboot but it failed. I had to remove the nvdaresman.kext to boot.

Did i missed something ?

I'm now writing from my first tiger install! Thank you to all of you who helped me!

The only problem I have is about the resolution of my screen. I'm trying to install callisto 008 following the instructions that came with it, but I can't open the Info.plist in callisto.kext with the "Property List Editor". It opens automatically through the text editor. What should I do? At 1024x768 I'm getting really sick! :D

Well, I had everything running, sound, network, multi-core, even golden patch...then I tried to install 10.5.1 and now I freeze on the Grey loading screen..then I get a message telling me to restart my computer...looks like I'll be installing 10.5 again...but no updates for me until I know that it's not going to crash my computer :( Thanks everyone for your posts.

Actually I did. The problem was that I used the long username (with space) and not the shortname (without space). I made the quick change and everything is Golden.. :D
