yea so apparently the VP of PopCap games had a little slip up, informing people that the AppleTV would support games

so does that put apple in direct competition with, say, Xbox 360?

also, controlling it with the Apple Remote?

Apple has tried this once before with some type of TV console system. I bet it will fail a 2nd time.

Direct competition with the Xbox360 ? You're kidding, right ?

I have the feeling it will be like games on the iPod, it's just there so Apple can tick off the "Games" on the feature check list.

Who knows, guess we wait till Apple gives an official word.

its not the style of Apple to give something just for free so i think if they are going to enter into the gaming zone, i guess they will make another product for that.

c-lot

..and about the ipod games i think that hardware must be capable of mini games at least .

About competing with consoles not a chance at least in this generation.

ciao.

Just in case anyone's lost, the proof can be found here. It was stupid to think that this is a console (the Apple tv I mean...) and I doubt well see any "real" games come out of this.

Still, the market for casual games truly is as large as he says it is, and a few Popcap games on the Apple tv certainly wouldn't hurt the bottom line. There's a HUGE market out there for these kinds of games. We're beginning to see it with Nintendo's products, and it will only increase in size. Having any device which could be considered a game device in the eyes of casual gamers is bound to make some money.

I'd love to discuss this more! But does anyone have any statistics on the iPod games? Personally, I find them enjoyable and intuitive... but admittedly, most will use an iPod for one reason ONLY: music.

If someone writes a Mame emulator for AppleTV, that would be cool. :)

Casual games is really not a bad idea for AppleTV. It would be like having access to Hotel games on your TV.

I could see having Nintendo games like Super Mario Brothers or Donkey Kong. Arcade classics and simple shoot 'em up games. Card games: Sudoku, Chess, Poker, Black Jack. Board games like: Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Monopoly and You Don't Know Jack. Atari classic games like Pole Position, Asteriods, Tank and Pong. And of course newly created games but keep them simple.

As long as the games are not terribly complicated, many of today's non-gamers might buy a few to keep around for parties and stuff.

This would be great for the casual gamer like what we had with the Atari 2600 back in 1978. Those games were simple, but very socially entertaining.

That reminds me, I used to write shoot 'em up arcade style games for the C-64 using Gary Kitchen's Game Maker. One of my games is still on the internet called "Laser Eagle V2". V1 was never released, it was written in BASIC. V2 made it to the top twenty downloads on QuantumLink. The game can be played using a C-64 emulator.

The game was created 21 years ago. It's a home grown classic.

eagleg.prg Laser Eagle V2.0. Shoot the ships that are
shooting at you to avoid getting shot down.

I haven't looked into this story at all but my first thought that came into mind was Xbox's 360 Marketplace. That has become a very big success and maybe Apple would want to start competing with that. A lot of the games the iPod features are also on Xbox Live Marketplace.

Who knows? I have my own doubts about this.
