TaterSalad77
Before I updated, I was running 10.4.8 with the old kernel. I then downloaded the JaS 10.4.8 beta9 sse2 updater today and applied the patch. Before restarting, I did a " update_prebindings -root / -force". After that was complete, I rebooted with -v -x -f. To my dismay, I am now stuck in a reboot cycle. This is the last thing I see before rebooting.... The last line before reboot is "Configuring kernel extensions for safe boot" My specs..... 1.83 Ghz Intel Centrino M 1024 MB of RAM ... I guess thats all that is important right now. Any ideas? snackole
Boot using -s and remove the r2d2.kext file in your extensions folder. /sbin/mount -uw / rm -rf System/Library/Extensions/r2d2.kext reboot Hope this helps. TaterSalad77
Ok, here a re very universal help guide for 95% of problems: 1.) clean your screen, you the first person I see leaving fingerpritns on WWW .. lol 2.) have you replaced smbios? 3.) have you deelted the 3 kext suggestedd including r2d2? 4.) try to find out what is comming after this line and try to remove it from startup scripts 5.) repair Permissions 6.) try update_prebindings -force from single user mode (don't forget to mount -uw / before) If this all does not help: post us the relevant system logs from /var/log No more reboot loop. Now every thing I've tried results in hanging at the loginwindow.app. 1. Screen cleaned. However, no effect on booting. 2. Copied SMBIOS and IOATAFamily.kext via MacDrive. Tried only SMBIOS, then tried both. Everything resulted in the hanging at the loginwindow.app. 3. I deleted r2d2 kext; AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext and Geforce.kext were not present. 4. Hangs now at loginwindow.app 5. Permissions repaired several times after each change. Nothing. 6. Updated prebinding several times after each change. Nothing. Any other ideas? As a side note, semthex I really appreciated your work. Jas you have made life easier for us all. I hope to figure out this problem not only for my benefit, but also for others with the same problems. Thanks! MarcusAurelius
Did you install ACPICPUTHrottle? You need to remove it. It causes a kernel panic with darwin 8.8.1. TaterSalad77
I have not installed ACPICPUThrottle. Any other ideas? Previously I had a 10.4.8 installation with the old kernel. I used the JaS 10.4.8 beta9 update pkg. Could this be a problem? What /var/log file should I be looking at to assess the problem? TaterSalad77
I also tried some more things: 1. installed titan.kext 2. deleted IOPCCardFamily.kext 3. repaired permissions to kernel with "chown root:wheel /mach_kernel" and "chomd 644 /mach_kernel" 4. tried the new exp2 kernel. (I am not completely sure I booted with the new kernel. I hit f8 and typed s5 and hit enter) All resulted in the same hanging at loginwindow.app Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35350-sse2-beta9-kernel-problems/#findComment-252408 Share on other sites
semthex
May be you should consider getting vesa runnign before using titan? you replaced smbios? TaterSalad77
May be you should consider getting vesa runnign before using titan? Probably. I just read in a guide somewhere they installed titan.kext, so I thought i'd give it a shot. you replaced smbios? Yup. I went to paulicat's website. downloaded the smbios kext. then in windows using macdrive I deleted the old kext and put in the new one. Then I repaired permissions. Same hanging at loginwindow.app problem. EDIT: also not sure if this matters (probably doesnt) but when i dont boot with -v -f -x, I see the apple logo and the spinning thing for a while, then the screen greys saying i need to restart. Bruce Wang
I have reported a problem in the thread (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=35319&st=60 Post#62) and found Post#73 also reported the same problem, so I think I should report here again. Freshly installed JaS 10.4.7 then applied JaS 8.8.1 SSE2 package, then did the Prebinding thing and reboot. The result was No Go. Screen shot attached. It just stopped there. Ezhoon
I managed to clean install the beta9 on my Sony Vaio FS15LP (Pentium M Dothan 2.13Ghz / DDR 1GB / ICH6M / Nvidia Go 6200 TurboCache / 15.4" Widescreen 1280x800 native resolution) The system is not stable at all, random finder and application crashes. Besides, once I install the Titan.kext or Natit, right after loginwindow loads, lcd screen became all white and hangs there. (I did put deviceID of 0167 into Geforce.kext, Nvdanv40hal.kext, Nvdaresman.kext) Here is my installation procedure: 1. Installed JaS 10.4.7 DVD 2. Installed JaS.10.4.8.Intel.SSE2.SemtheX.Beta9.dmg 3. Removed AppleSMBIOS.kext, IOATAFamily.kext, IOPCCardFamily.kext (R2D2.kext was removed by the JaS.10.4.8.Intel.SSE2.SemtheX.Beta9.dmg installation) 4. Copied Paulicat's AppleSMBIOS.kext and IOATAFamily.kext 5. Repaired permissions and cleared caches in Terminal 6. Removed mach_kernel and copied the new s5 kernel and named it mach_kernel 7. Opened Disk Utility and fixed permissions again. 8. Reboot. Guest goodtime
I have reinstalled 5 times now, will keep trying. Good luck! Thanks for reporting the error. I've got the same problem. I temporarily went back to 10.4.6 on my Laptop as I am in the midst of developing Clonetool Hatchery. Let us know if you find which kernel extensions are causing the problem and which ones need to be replaced. I am curious to know what the problem is. Cheers, Goodtime Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35350-sse2-beta9-kernel-problems/#findComment-252963 Share on other sites

Guest goodtime
I just tried that one. It did not work. I ran into this loginwindow problem myself. Using the JaS Combo 10.4.8 SSE2 combo update and replacing with the S5 Kernel, I was able to boot (after swapping out the ACPI and ACIP kext's.) However, I did not find any benefits yet compared my 10.4.6 system. Possibly when a full blown 10.4.8 SSE2 JaS update is created there will be! TaterSalad77
Success! I booted to desktop with the new exp6 kernel. This is what I did..... Installed Apple 10.4.8 Update with JaS dvd. Removed and replaced AppleSMBIOS.kext Rebooted, and success! However, I am experiencing some performance issues. Sometimes it flies and perfomance is great. Other times (seems random) it is real sluggish (cpu fan usually comes on).Coul AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext have anything to do with this? Jeezoflip
I just tried it today. I did it in verbose, and it says its missing a bunch of things, and then says kextd[27] diskarb isn't ready yet couldn't setup diskarb sessions and it keeps doing that and doing that, and then it pauses for a bit and says "Still waiting for root devices" Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35350-sse2-beta9-kernel-problems/#findComment-257249 Share on other sites
