username931
I am looking into designing a for profit web site using php and mysql. When thinking about the cost of such an operation I am (with the power of google) at a loss for information on the costs of running a website for a large number of users. I know the cost of shared and dedicated hosting and the cost of a server, but none of that says anything about the number of simultaneous users that I could support. So if anyone reading this runs a high volume site (or has these answers) could post raw numbers about their userbase and costs that would be extremely helpful. Also, information about how you managed growth, replication, load balancing, and backup would be great. Sorry if this seems random or off topic. sHARD>>
It really depends on what kind of site you are running, not just how many users. With huge scripts, many users, and quality bandwidth, this site costs...well, I'll just leave it at "it's expensive". What kind PHP/MySQL scripts would you be running, how many projected users, what country will most of them be in, how good support do you want, and how fast do you want pings and bandwidth? All important questions. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35080-hosting-costs/#findComment-249079 Share on other sites
s0me.one
Hi, I sell hosting services, I have an 2x DualCore AMD Opteron 7.2GHz (4 cores), 4GB of RAM and a dedicated line of 100Mbps. Just tell me the ammount of space that you need, maybe I can sponsor your project! E-mail: prodrigues@synat-mail.org I'm waiting for your answer. Cheers Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35080-hosting-costs/#findComment-249125 Share on other sites
username931
It really depends on what kind of site you are running, not just how many users. With huge scripts, many users, and quality bandwidth, this site costs...well, I'll just leave it at "it's expensive". I'm guessing I'd be running a site that would use about the same or less resources as a bulletin board site (per user). Running a site like this very clearly is "expensive," I was actually wondering what the exact number is and how a site like this is configured. I have no experience of any kind with servers that host more 1-3 users at a time. What kind PHP/MySQL scripts would you be running, how many projected users, what country will most of them be in, how good support do you want, and how fast do you want pings and bandwidth? All important questions. How about running an Osx86 fourum with 56,000 registered users, average 300 users online, max users ever online is 1,860, worldwide users, with fast pings and bandwith. other
With a well configured server you could go cheaper. I hired a 3Ghz P4 with 2GB RAM for €49 that server could easily run this site. oregano
yeah, on a site as big as this, bandwith better be maximum but im not sure how many downloads are offered from this site but the osx 86 project definately has infinite bandwith but yeah, $300 sounds good Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35080-hosting-costs/#findComment-251056 Share on other sites
A Nonny Moose
Well, if you're going to run a website that will see tons of traffic, you will need a nice hosting service. A lot of regular joes and small businesses would get by nicely by turning on web sharing and running their website directly from their Macs.
