IAdware Trojan aims for Macs

Published: 2006-11-24

Online fraudsters may be ready to put Mac users in their sights.

On Thursday, antivirus firm F-Secure published a brief analysis of a proof-of-concept adware program for the Mac OS X that could theoretically hook into any application to run attacker-specified code. The program, dubbed IAdware by F-Secure, could be silently installed in a user's account without requiring administrator rights.

"We won't disclose the exact technique used here--it's a feature not a bug--but let's just say that installing a System Library shouldn't be allowed without prompting the user," stated F-Secure in the blog post. "Especially as it only requires Copy permissions."

Vulnerability researchers have increasingly focused on finding flaws in the Mac OS. During the month of November, two serious flaws in Apple's operating system were disclosed as part of the Month of Kernel Bugs (MoKB) project. Researchers and attackers have also focused more on turning vulnerabilities into exploit code, according to a recent report published by Symantec, the owner of SecurityFocus.

The IAdware proof-of-concept code did nothing malicious, but merely opened up a browser each time an application was opened, F-Secure stated.

You lost alot of respect with that post my friend. Wishing viruses and dstruction to mac owners data and such is low. How about "I can't wait for you Linux {censored}s get a virus, and you will be put in your place." Yes, harsh with the cussword and not calling YOU or anybody an {censored}, but don't wish {censored} on others cause it will come back and bight you in the ass. :censored2:

lol i use windows... so i dont even have to explain it as you allready know about those viri... its the viri king.... so its whatever... i was kinda baked/pissed when i wrote that, what i meant to say, is that osx has security through obscurity, and if you are very careful you can keep a windows box viri free with no antivirus (but its quite hard :D) and i have to admit i did come out sounding like an {censored}.... so its all good, i was just saying that because some of the apple people i know are all up their own asses saying that the os is so much beter and everything, and say that i should get a mac/ switch to osx because im "running a {censored} os that is way behind osx" and even if that is true I require windows for alot of my work, and even though it would be a sad day when an apple virus comes out if it does ill be able to wipe right back and say "look at your impenetrable fortress now..." and my theory is that because more and more people are moving to apple more and more viruses/hacks will be developed, the only reasion they target windows is that it holds most of the market share, why attack something obscure when you can attack most peoples computers? sorry for writing that so badly.... cause that was kind of really {censored}ish, and i definately didnt mean it that way (well, I did at the time because i was just thinking of like 2 or 3 people who do that who would finally stfu... but then again it would be hurting all my friends here :D )

and A Nonny Moose, i dont cry about it, because i know there are alternate oss out there that have virtually no to no viri (osx is the best example right now considering....) and if i could, i would switch.... but i need windows, and viri are just a part of that, i just have to be carefull where i go on the internet (no "free" porn sites here lol)

and wow, we are all friends.... i just made a really stupid comment....

and to John the Geek, no comment.... heh, sars, thats not in America yet.... we should get some (just kidding, i know what it is.... and its horrible....)

hope everyone can understand :worried_anim:

No harm. I seem to be perpetually pissed off lately myself. I need a beanie-baby to take out my frustration on instead of replying to other people's posts.

So I apologize to everyone for being aggressive. (You too WOW...)

lol, i wasnt concieously pissed or whatever, i just wrote the first thing that popped into my head, witch was one of the dumbest things that i could have written.... as it so happened to be... and its ok, i dont blame you for being pissed, thats like, well.... i guess its allready happened on windows, so i guess its like someone saying "i hope your harddrive catches fire and dies..." and it happens to the best of us.... and i thought the sars thing was kind of funny anyway :D

and Hagar, it was my fault, hopefully the explination i gave will explain it and it should most definately stop the flaming.... and i dont blame them for it.... sorry about that.

I'm praying that Vista will be the secure operating system we deserve.I don't have high hope but I 'm praying it will be.

The minute we could be sure Vista is safe and finally Microsoft did it right,I'm going say "Hallelujah Everybody run out and buy Vista " .

But I just don't think these things is going to happen.

I think more and more users are going to turn to Linux.

If you got a PC ,Linux is very good choice secure reliable, huge array of free software.

If you buying a new computer get a Macintosh

Vista being safe not going to happen.

Linux or Mac very good for them ,very bad for Microsoft.

Bad mood, ok. It was uncharacteristic of ya, but still harsh. Everybody has off days, so it is all good. For second there I figured we lost another rational thinker to the flaming f***tards. heh.

that and not thinking, not thinking is the downfall of me, and thats what happened when you (I) dont... sorry about that, and thanks for understanding, but at least now I have learned my lession (dont smoke and post, lol, more like think before you (I) say something really stupid... and its uncharacteristic of me because I knew something like that would happen if i didnt think... but i slipped up... surprised it hasnt happened before, but hopefully its done), and trust me, youll never lose me to the flaming f***tards because thats what chased me from another forum that i liked (osba cough cough... now i cant get in to the new one) thanks for understanding guys. :sorcerer:

and katmail, I dont think it will be, because it still supports previous viruses through allmost complete backwards compatibility (maybe.... idk, it is m$) but the other issue is that it will be oem soon, and oem is the main target of hackers, because it holds a huge percent of the market share (because most people ether dont know, or dont care how to install and/or use a new, possibly better os.... ) so thats the target of all hackers with any sense, why hack 7% of the market (random #) when you can hack 89%+ (another random #) of the market? I wish it could be like that (although i refuse to migrate to vista... xp was good, then server 2003 is teh best windows os, then vista is downhill, to resource hungry and buggy for this geek... i actually may consider an apple :) if m$ os after vista is as bad at that, or if everything stops working on xp and tells you you need vista....) also, I dont think this will help Linux in any way shape or form, you and I and everyone (or damn near) everyone here may be able to use, install, or even start linux, but the vast majority of people don't know how to do any of those.... so I think that since you can't buy Linux oem (easially, i know there are a couple of exceptions) they wont flock towards Linux and open source, but instead to apple, because that may well be the only other computer and other os that they have ever heard of, that and theyll see the comercials and go "oh, hey, osx can (insert funny joke from commercial saying what thing osx can do better) and windows has gotten pretty bad lately, so I think ill give apple a try... " Linux is to hard for any regular person and/or anyone who does not have the time to learn the differences from windows, i happen to be in highschool so i was lucky enough to have that time, but people (for the most part, just normal people, not people here who happen to be quite good with computers...) dont have ether the time or the expertiese or the will to go through the trouble of learning a new os.... that and they may have never heard of it...
