1) download this precompiled VLC http://rapidshare.de/files/6116408/VLC_200...86_bin.rar.html and mount the dmg. Then drag VLC out and put it anywhere.I put it in my desktop (this VLC has all the dvd playback libs included in it)

2)Put a dvd in your dvd drive and open VLC.Now I can play the dvd with menus or without them.

Thanks JaS. Patchburn and the new VLC build helped here a great deal. Before, I could use the old VLC only to watch a particular file off a DVD. Not the whole deal with menus, etc. And the display was mis-proportioned -- way too wide. Now, with these two changes, A DVD plays just from pointing VLC to it, with working menus, and a correct display. This is with an nVidia 5200. The vid is a little slow still, but decent enough. Thanks again.

Your welcome, happy to help & Im glad it worked for you and here is another tip,in the vlc preferences under video-->filters check deinterlace filter.it will give you alittle more speed it seems.also if you have to play the dvd video size.then it will play smooth :)

Good work JaS,

It works with the newer VLC version VLC_20050924_x86_bin.dmg, not the 0825 version. No QE/CI here so it is a little slow, but watchable.

It is strange that stated on the Patchburn FAQ:

Q: Does PatchBurn 3 give me support for viewing video DVDs?

A: No, all reading capabilities are enabled in Mac-OS X by default. PatchBurn has no influence on that. If your drive does not read DVDs or CDs, there must be another hardware problem e.g. wrong jumper settings, defective cable or defective drive

In addition, does it work with DVDROM?

Q: Does PatchBurn support CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives?

A: No, PatchBurn only supports CDRW and DVD writers. CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives won't need PatchBurn. Since they are read only devices, they should be supported by Mac-OS X right out of the box.

Good Job,Its great to see some people finaly getting DvD playback

About not needing patchburn for dvd playback.Yea thats prob. true for the os x ppc version.

Bump

Thanks!!!

I have been trying to get a DVD to play forever. The only problem is that any DVD I play is pink and green. I know I remember seeing somthing on this but I can't find it. I have Quartz and Core image support with a Prescott 3.0Ghz and 1GB memory.

under prefrences for vlc ---video pick quartz extreme to render the video.dont forget to check advance in prefrences or you wont see the option to set video rendering.

Maybe this should be made sticky?

I start VLC. Everything is green and pink.

Under VLC / Preferences .... / Video I cannot see quartz extreme even if I check the "advanced" option.!!

What do you mean with "check in advance in preferences" ?

Thanks

Here is a pic of how to pick quartz to render video in vlc.Its done in vmware and there is no qe or ci.So that shows you it will work in your native install as well with an unsupported video card :D

I don't see any option for raw axx in patchburn. Also my dvd drive burns out of the box. I installed Patchburn and rebooted. When i try to play a dvd by using "Open Disc" i get the error:

vcd: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty

vcd: failed to get the TOC

vcd: no movie tracks found

access_file: file /dev/rdisk2 is empty, aborting

cdda: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty

cdda: failed to get the TOC

cdda: no audio tracks found

main: no suitable access module for `dvdnav:///dev/rdisk2'

If i open a VOB file, i get:

access_file: read failed (Permission denied)

access_file: read failed (Permission denied)

access_file: read failed (Permission denied)

And if i open the video_ts folder it acts like it is playing, then the pause button becomes the play button, then nothing.

those where the errors I got before I used patchburn and the vlc in the link. Are you using the vlc from the link i provided?or vlc from somewhere else? The Vlc link im providing has all the dvd libs compiled into it get the vlc from here

People that have dvd players that are recognised as apple supported/shipped should not use patchburn. It says right on the patchburn site that patchburn is for getting support on unsupported drives.

I downloaded the "PatchBurn 4.0.0a4 for Mac-OS X 10.4 (english)" and the VLC from the link in the original post.

Well then you are the first person I know of that this doesnt work.I"m sorry its not working for you.

Could you explain where the option is for raw axx in Patchburn?

EDIT: Re-downloaded patchburn and VLC from the links provided. Set everything to true in patchburn, even installed iDVD 4 support with no luck. The system profiler now shows the drive as Vendor Supported, however it still does not work. I am still unable to find any reference to raw axx in patchburn or the configuration file created by it. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

EDIT #2: Tried Xineplayer and VLC 8.2 PPC, still no go.

hey thanks for the info i got it to work but i am facing somehow a problem: the "smoothness" of the movie depends on the window size...

the smaller the window the smoother the video runs...

i have a asus z9100 laptop (1.6ghz sse2 centrino ati 9700 mobility radeon 512 mb ddr ram)
