there are over 27 different active subforums. 7 of them deal with osx86, and the other 22 are basically off-topic to the main purpose of the site. Are going to seriously try to tell me that the 7000 posts in windows, 11000 posts in real life, 19000 posts in front page news and rumors, 1500 posts in Apple Computers and Hardware, and countless other posts in the other 18 subforums, are all related to installing Mac OS X on beige box PCs? That is absurd!

Post count never had anything to do with knowledge or expertise in osx86. It didn't before, it doesn't now, and it still won't if we make a 99,999 replies thread.

The way to really judge how much someone helps is to see them in the main osx86 subforums helping, and to see links in their sig to tutorials or fixes that they have written. Post count is irrelevant.

Come now, lets be reasonable.

And someone with 4,000 replies probably does know more than someone with 1, but I don't think anyone is going to come and make 4,000 replies in a random replies thread and not help with the community at all.

agreed w/ social - to gauge how well some1 knows osx86 is too look at their sig, see what hardware they're running and see what tutorials they have. I've had handfulls of people send me PM's because i say i've got something working in a thread and they have the same hardware. they never mention anything about my post #....

The reason why I disagree is that this has become a general computer website, dedicated both to hardware and operating systems (of course with a special emphasis on Macs and OS X), thus only the subforums from Real Life to Thunderdome (Random Stuff) are really offtopic (and, isn't it funny that Thunderdome has the most replies of the whole Discuss and Learn section?)

Also I am of the opinion that a serious commitment (thus not just counting) in the offtopic section(s) of any forum is valuable. Offtopic is where people create a sense of community.

Probably not, but as post #9279 proves, there can be people who have almost 2,000 replies, the vast majority being in this thread.

The forum most definitely does not have 22 off-topic sub-forums. The only ones I see here are the Laughs section, Thunderdome, and possibly the Website Invitation Exchange (depending on how you look at it). But even then, the Laughs and Thunderdome section is where members get to know each other. We learn about other peoples hobbies, interests, and find things in common with each other. People register here not just because the are into OSx86, but also Apple/Technology/Windows/Macs, etc... All those sub-forums are related to those previously listed things!

Again, this forum is no longer focused only on OSx86. And where has the idea of "post count = how much someone has helped" came from? As I said in my last post: "post count shows someone's dedication to the community." Nowhere have I stated that post count is a measure of how much someone has helped. I have said that generally post count can also measure someone's knowledge in one of the subjects this forum covers. And that correlation generally does fit too.

Really? 91% (1788) of Universe JDJ's posts are in this topic alone.

Now, you seem to have missed my argument/point. I quote:

"Does someone who joins the community with 1 post have an opinion just as valid/great as someone with 4,000? No, absolutely not! The people who have contributed to this community deserve to have a larger impact/say in the general running of things than those who haven't."

What I am saying here is nothing to do with helping people. It's about being noticed, recognizing someone's importance, having a voice, and earning the title of InsanelyMac Deity. This topic alone completely corrupts the whole post count system.

ok, I misunderstood your intent.

I agree with the sense of community aspect.

I think that this thread has helped the sense of community, to some degree. If you read through the posts, there are many sections where people (myself, bedlight, MoC, and others) discuss their lives, and the problems/etc that they are having. I think this is very good. If we could make a thread for something like this without all the pointless posts (just the numbers), would that be acceptable?

Yay I was referenced in a debacle. Haha.

We can argue with Sabr all we want, he's still gonna use his Admin powers on us. I know I'm making a 99999 cause I called it, don't care if it gets shut down, but I am doing it. Once that's closed, I think we should just make a thread that's like this. Except no numbers. It'll be like an IRC thing.

this plan of action is agreeable to me.

in other words, RIGHT ON!!!

PS

wow a serious debate just happened in 9999 Replies!

A general "Life, the Universe, and Everything (else)" topic would be fine. As long as it's focus and only point is not to increase post count. :D

It's not about me using my powers bedlight - it's about doing what's right and stopping what's wrong. I'm not closing this topic just because I can. I'm doing it for a reason (please read my previous two or three posts).

Oh, and if you want to Instant Message, then use IRC or something.

@ Everyone involved in the post count issue: I'm glad we can have a debate that doesn't lead to flame wars and petit arguments. :)

- Sabr.

Yes, Sabr, I can only agree with the debate part. I read the post a few thread's back and I didn't mean THAT kind of lazy. Maybe I was a little carried away, I don't know, but I still think that 9999 replies has helped this whole community and should deserve for its concept to be respected. Remember, concept means concept, not let's keep this thread open. Just don't shut bedlight's one down.

Anyway, isn't this supposed to be like a tradition to be honored. Swad made this thread and idea, why not let it move on as a reminder of how he served for us. He was the site founder, and for now he is what we can call the "creator" and "protector" of the wonderful community to be.

Haha I just pillaged 2 250GB hard drives from my dad. IDE, but they are pretty fast (76 and 66 on XBench disk test).

It sucks that I have to limit my ram in order to avoid kernel panics when I'm using IDE drives...

As I said - 999 was fun and dandy. But really, it's not helping the community at all. I don't see how it can be. If you've read my post, surely you can see how it's only ruining the post-count system?

Just don't shut bedlight's one down.

Are you serious?
