I tried booting the Dapper Drake CD and it's hanging in the startup screen. There also appear the be numerous errors on the disk itself. So right now, I am ging to order more disks (PowerPC disks being used on an iMac G3 if that helps). Maybe it's just a disk problem.

Oh, and ps, im assuming that you ran the "check disk for defects or errors or whatever" button to figure out if the media was the culpret? i hope that you can find a solution, i found mine by burning 2dvds 1cd and ordering 35 :( and it wasnt the disks

Hey man, i tried that too i think, (not positive, but pritty sure) but ill give it ago anyway, thanks for the hint dabear.... ill let you know how it goes...

oh, and A Nonny Moose, did you get it all worked out?

No and I'm sick of fighting it. I'm going back to Mac OS on that one.

Man I hate to say it... but I despise Ubuntu.

There are very few Linux distros I detest, but Ubuntu is on my list with a fury I have not had since Corel's distro.

real men emerge.

the rest ubuntu.

I dispise it after waiting 3 weeks for it to come in, whial i burnt 3 dvds and 2 cds thinking that i just needed to redownload the iso cause it was corrupt.... getting all these cds that are just laying here (around 35)... hello bsd ;)

Up until Dapper, the only installation method was thru an ncurses interface or text-mode install if you will, now that dapper is out, there's two install cd's; the live cd and the alternate cd. The installation from the live cd is much faster and is by a graphical UI (either qt or gtk depending on if you are using kubuntu live or ubuntu live).

While this is the preferred method of installation ('cause it's a lot easier and faster), there's still the alternate cd, which is the old text-mode cd in a new name. If the live cd fails, I suggest you'd try the alternate cd for dapper, rather than the text-mode installation disks for the previous releases

(Anyway; reinstalling takes like 20 minutes, but the upgrade (using aptitude or the update-manager) is taking like 2 hours here. Because I have /home on a seperate partition, I just almost always reinstall when there's a new version out; all my settings are kept in my home directory)

Yeah... good point. I can see where you are going here. After all. xorg is not perfect. If you can, try Xvesa instead. It tends to be more compatible with graphics boards.

:)

Oh yeah... by the way... BSD really is more difficult to install than Ubuntu. Ubuntu is also far more user friendly. Bwhsh8r, you really got to think for the Linux novices out there who don't even know how to mount a disk, let alone use BSD.

yea, but you see, i reference pc-bsd witch unlike allmost all other bsds is easy to install and comes with a graphical installer, a gui, and theyre own proprietary .pbi in witch is like a .exe.... but yes i agree with you, and im going to download the alternate install to see if that works

Just remember, MacOS X works on VERY limited PC hardware. While Ubuntu, and Linux in general, has MUCH wider hardware support, there are still configurations that just don't play nice. I run Ubuntu on my laptop as its only OS, but the LiveCD doens't even boot on my desktop.
