Eddie Turfboer
Hello, I have a question regarding some pretty anoing stuff in mac os x. I have a dual boot of windows xp and mac os x. I have four harddrives, the first got windows xp, second mac os x, third documents (ntfs; 2 partitions) and fourth my fat32 harddrive for shared documents. First of all I cannot transfor the ntfs disk into fat32 due to some file size limits. As said in the title I have a problem with disapearing folders. Some folders are not visible in os x. I was wondering how this could be happening. Secondly when I boot os x sometines I just miss two harddrives from listting completely (both partitions ntf on same harddisk). Does anybody know if this problem could be solved. Thanks for any answer, Eddie Turfboer Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/22386-disapearing-files-and-folders-on-ntfs/ Share on other sites
macgirl
I have that problem also, but sometimes if I rename the folder or the file from windows it appear on when I get back to Mac OS. Sometimes a folder conatining 20 files only shows 10 in Mac OS, but if I rename or move several files they appear. domino
Drives sometimes not mounting is normal for my system. I have 2 ntfs, 1 ext usb, and 1 fat32 and not all of them mount sometimes. I have to manually mount the drive to gain access. it's not really a big deal since it's a one step process. As for the hidden files, it's very strange. i don't that problem. What measures are you taking to make the files reappear? Where are you saving the files? If on the desktop, then yes, I have that problem and a Finder restart usually makes them re-appear. I think that the desktopp is't refreshing properly. Driver, UI problem on hacked OS, who knows... belgrano
I have that problem also, but sometimes if I rename the folder or the file from windows it appear on when I get back to Mac OS. Sometimes a folder conatining 20 files only shows 10 in Mac OS, but if I rename or move several files they appear. I can confirm that. Renaming the folder or moving it makes it accesible again in OS X. As for HDD not mounting in OS X, I had that problem with a NTFS 80GB HDD almost every day when I was running Mac OS X 10.4.5. Now, with 10.4.6 things are much better (the problem appears only once in a while). Maybe the issue it's related to how fragmented the data is on that HDD, or to the time needed to read the info from that disk at OS X boot. domino how do you mount a HDD in that case? Eddie Turfboer
For the files part there is no solution to let them reapear. I mean I do not know the solution. These files are on a ntfs disk and not on my desktop. I am using 10.4.6 and the problem of the not apearing drives is still there, rebooting multiple times sometimes helps. cbmkgd
I've experienced that folder/file disappearance yesterday... scared the bejesus out of me (didn't want to re-download that jas dvd! forgot to back it up on dvdr). Back in windoes, was glad to see it was still there. A whole folder disappeared after a reboot, having used it flawlessly just before, just reading its files and extracting from them. And this happened simultaneously on two osx installs, for the same folder; so this ain't a local osx problem, it's some peculiarity of the folder/files that makes (any?) osx not to recognize it... but what? On't know... Glad -- or at least feeling less lonely -- to search and find that this is an 'old' and known problem, and not something out of my messing around nor corrupting the fs... Merely renaming the folder didn't suffice. Had to move files to a new folder in windows. Empty folder stayed hidden to osx's. (note: this was on my pata drive, not the sata) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/22386-disapearing-files-and-folders-on-ntfs/#findComment-235238 Share on other sites
brighttie
For me it's even worse, the whole NTFS drvie looks just empty in os x, although it does have some gigas data in it under windows. Weird, don't know what made this happen. Just remember I used windows for several days w/o even a visit to os x, maybe os x revenged, who knows... hecker
Just wanted to let you guys know that I have the exact same problem that you do. Damn NTFS. I've had enough with this. The worse thing is: the drive is 200GB! Better buy a new drive I guess. I'm running JaS's latest release with all fixes. hecker Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/22386-disapearing-files-and-folders-on-ntfs/#findComment-292067 Share on other sites
