OK, I've been following this thread for a while. I've got a question for Deano_uk (or anyone else who has the folllowing MB). I'm getting ready to buy the parts for my build and I'm almost decided on the MSI P55-GD65. I'm curious as to how you compiled/edited your DSDT and what kexts you're using for audio. Based on the posts here, I know I could easily go with a Gigabyte board, but I really like this MSI board a bit better. Also, do you have sleep working? Not a big deal, just curious.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any help you can give. It doesn't have to be too in-depth... I just need some pointers before I pull the trigger and buy the board. I'm relatively experienced building Hacks, but I'm still a bit limited in DSDT editing. Thanks!

is it possible to use VMware/Parallels with the existing Windows partition, rather than using Boot Camp or creating a virtual hard disk image?

VmWare can create a virtual machine from an existing Windows partition and keep all the settings and applications intact but you can't point it to a Windows partition and have it just work without converting first if that's what you are asking.

I have a dual booting system running (on 2 separate hard drives)- it's no big deal. Right now I have Windows 7 x64 on an IDE drive, and Snow Leopard on a SATA drive. On my GA-P55M-UD2, the SATA drive automatically boots 1st. You would have to set the hard disk priority in BIOS if they're both SATA drives to access the drive with Chameleon on it 1st, then you can stop the boot sequence and select your Windows drive.

I haven't done it using 1 hard drive in quite a while. I know you have to format the drive Master Boot Record though. I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult- years ago I had XP/Tiger/Ubuntu on 1 drive, but I'm sure with Snow Leopard it would be a bit different. :(

Was there a particular guide/thread you followed for the dual boot setup?

ehh..i have a big problem.

I try install leopard from iatkos v7.

1. boot from iatkos dvd

2. press f8 and type "busratio=20 -v" then enter

3.. and after 3-5 second all system restart....

what is going on?? any help?

my config:

core i5 750

msi p55-gd65

in bios all drives set to ahci

Was there a particular guide/thread you followed for the dual boot setup?

For Dual Boot with 2 separate hard drives, all you have to do is:

1. Install Snow Leopard

2. Unplug Snow Leopard hard drive

3. Install Windows (7/Vista/XP)

4. Plug Mac hard drive back in

5. Set hard drive priority in BIOS to load Mac hard drive 1st

6. When Chameleon loads, stop countdown and you should see both Operating Systems!

You can then load either Mac or Windows! :P

All right! Thanks to tony's awesome guide, I now have SL on my brand new box! I'm using a gigabyte p55-ud4p with an i7 860 and a radeon 4850. I didn't install leopard first, but used my girlfriends MBP for setting up the usb drive.

For those of you who have limited access to a mac (even though my gf has one, my access is still pretty limited ), I recommend copying the contents of tony's zip file and the 10.6.2 combo updater disk image to your usb drive before starting the install.

Then follow tony's guide (skipping step 4) up to step 5 and re-organize steps 6-9 like so:

  1. When the installer starts, use the disk utility to partition the destination drive (it's in the utilities menu), then continue with the install (Step 4 revisited)
  2. After the install completes, open the terminal (also in the utilities menu) and copy the files listed in Step 8 from /Volumes/SnowLeopardInstaller/ into /Volumes/YourNewInstall/
  3. Power off the computer manually! do not restart!
  4. Let your computer boot the PC EFI tool on the usb key again, but this time choose your new leopard install. Make sure you enter the same boot options you used for the installer.
  5. After SL has booted and you've finished the initial setup (create user account etc), run the PC EFI tool from the USB key on your SL partition.
  6. You might want to double check that you have copied the Extra folder to your new SL install drive as well (I missed this in the terminal the first time)

After that, restart and try booting from your hard drive, if that works carry on from step 10

Some notes:

  • As was mentioned in other posts you need to have your primary hard drive connected to channel 0 of the GSata connectors. (On my board it's the grey one, instead of the 3 blue ones).
  • In fact, I found that having *anything* (such as my SATA DVD drive) connected to one of the blue connectors causes the installer to run *extremely slow*.
  • The system will only boot if I give it the following options: -x busratio=21 cpus=1 -v. It seems like -x is needed for my video to work, the system boot without it, but the video is totally fscked

Congrats grncdr! Just some comments on your notes section.

- From my understanding, for 10.6.2, you no longer need the flags. Also, are you using the patched PCEFI boot file that was recently posted by Treky and TonyMac also compiled by TonyMac in posts 464-468? I thought this addressed ATI cards along with the fix that was in the previous i5boot file. I found that by going to PCEFI boot, I now get 64 bit efi instead of 32 with the Chameleon based one. So I guess once I swapped that out, I was fully 64 bit.

edit: I should clarify that I haven't installed the 10.6.2 combo updater yet. It got about halfway through and had a kernel panic. So I decided I should try and get things booting without the -x flag first.

I'm using the boot file that was in tony's zip file as of yesterday, which should have the fix according to his blog. On the other hand I did not have any extra kexts for my ATI card installed, so I'm trying the LegacyATI4800Controller.kext from netkas blog next, I'll let you know how it goes...

and again..another problem... leopard install with no problem, then time to install snow.. i prepared pendrive, set bios (optimized, ahci, boot from pendrive)..

boot computer from pendrive...and after pci efi 10.5 logo..kernel panic..

Awesome thanks Tony, will need to try it out once I can free up a HD for Windows 7.

Replaced my HD4850 with a ZOTAC GTX260 (which is able to route digital-sound thru HDMI). Installed it, booted, everything works out of the box! Go figure...

So i recommend everyone who didn't need ATI-Graphiccards to use nvidia, much easier and it "just works".

I got one last problem in my install: After exchanging the i5boot with the new bootfile from tonymac i have problems with stuttering sound (have the old 10.6.1 AppleHDMA in the /Sys/Lib/Extensions Folder). On boot i get the message that the timing is drastically different then before... ;)

Any idea?

I just had a hard time trying to replace my NVIDIA 8800GT 512MB with a PowerColor ATI HD4850 (Triple-Interface - DVI, HDMI, VGA) on my GA-P55M-UD2. I didn't get the card to work! ;)

I tried tonymacs latest bootfile, and Graphicsenabler=yes, but all i get is a garbled black and white distorted checkerboard when normaly the blue screen and then the desktop would arrive. I tried to add a kext from netkas' instructions for 10.6.2 to no avail.

I even tried to do a complete new install via my usb-stick where i get the same results.

I replaced the HD 4850 with my trusty old 8800GT and all is again fine now!

I will return the ATI-Card tomorrow to the dealer and take one of the more modern NVIDIA cards. Goodbye ATI!

What nvidia-card would you suggest as the best in compatibility/price/performance? I don't play, i want to be able to use 2 monitors as with the 8800GT (which should go to another rig) and want be able to connect a AV-Receiver via HDMI for 1080p Video (Sound via Optical from the board)??

TIA

Sorry just picked up on this message.

I just used the DSDT patcher whilst in Leo to create my file. Happy to post a copy if needed.

Using voodoohda for audio and thats it, works a treat.

I cant get sleep to work or should I say it goes to sleep but then wont wake up.

One of the best things I like about this board is how few kexts are needed. If I get some free time this weekend I might try and make a guide for this board.

Thank You Thank You!

I have this MB and haven't has success yet. Will try this afternoon. One thing. After I install, the installer tells me that the installation failed because the drive I installed in onto isn't bootable (or something to that effect) however, the install went to the end. Perhaps your method will allow me to put in correct kexts to allow it to work. I'm excited...

It's normal for the installer to do that. You need to make sure you POWER OFF the machine MANUALLY (HOLD DOWN THE SWITCH) when you reach this point. if you restart with the button it won't work. Sorry for the shouting, but I totally missed this the first time (maybe two times ;)) and couldn't figure out what was wrong.

About kexts, I don't yet know enough to tell you which ones you might need, I used the Realtek one included in tony's zip file and it's working great. But installing the LegacyATI4800Controller kext from netkas made my system hang on boot. I'm not 100% sure what's going on there yet.

Current problems:

  • I can't boot without safemode (due to graphics corruption).
  • I can't install 10.6.2 (tried both the ComboUpdater from apple.com and the one you get from software update) I get a kernel panic about 70% of the way through it every time.

Great! Thanks for replying. I always try to find very compatible boards for my hacks. Curious to see if you've tried the digital outs with voodoohda. Not a big deal right now, but maybe down the road. Sleep is not an issue... I usually leave my computers on all the time unless I'm leaving for a few days. I can wait for the DSDT - don't have the board yet. But it would be nice if you could post it sometime - maybe when you do your guide.

I'm looking forward to your guide.

I'll report back when I get my parts for the build... hopefully soon :)

Not sure what mobo you're running but I'm running a Gigabyte UD3R, but audio didn't work for me with tony's steps with the 10.6.1 kext. I tried out the audio kext here, which seems specific to Gigabyte p55 boards and also 64 bit. Works like a charm, but I haven't tried HD sound, only stereo.

Is your audio working on the UD4P?

ALAS, I am having no luck. I installed SL on my drive. It got to end and failed as was expected. I started a shell and tried to remove the mach_kernel from the install HD but the shell doesn't have sudo so I couldn't remove it. So I removed the HD and put it in an external inclosure and hooked it to my iMac and moved all of the files from the tonymacx86 folder to proper place on my HD. I installed the EFI 10.1 with chameleon on it. I boot from the HD stopping it and entering -x busratio=21 cpus=1 -v and it goes through the boot process showing everything it is doing overlaid on the efi boot screen. Then is switches over to another screen goes right passed where it used to hang then I see something like system halting and it turns off. I didn't realize this was going to be such work. The 3 other Hackintoshes I set-up didn't give me near this much trouble. Anyone have any more suggestions?

I want to build a strong computer with this MB/i7... could you guys guide me through the other stuff also? What would be a good GFX ? and RAM ?

Looking forward 1GB GTX and 6GB of RAM.

Hard Drive: I'm running a WD Green, temporarily, but would rather go with a Blue or even better a Black. I think from what I've read, Greens are better for storage and not really for the OS drive.

DVD/BD drive: I have this exact same model, and so far so good. I'm loving it both in Win7 and OS X

Power Supply: I honestly hear more fan noise coming from my HS and case fans, so I doubt you'll hear your power supply fan. I have a Corsair that I'm happy with. Their whole line seems to get great reviews on Newegg.

Video: I have a GTX 260, which I love. I think people are having better luck with NVIDIA over ATI, based on some recent posts in this thread.

Case: I've heard good things about the 300, but I went with the humongous HAF full tower for air flow since I wanted to OC my i5. I'm at a solid and cool 3.8 right now at around 35 degrees idle average.

Stuff I've skipped: Looks good!

@lectrman, did you make sure that you have set both the P55 SATA and the GIGABYTE SATA to AHCI in BIOS?

@goldenaustin: thanks for the link to the kexts, i tried and it works for my external x-Fi usb-soundcard, but the internal soundports are not listed. I will try to remove LegacyHDA_ALC888B.kext from my /Extra/Extensions Folder, will see if this helps.

Here is a screen shot. Any ideas?
