TheGreatDeceiver
Just one more question GD, can you direct me too a fix for a failure in detecting the SD Card Reader in a dell 1720? I've attempted to search but I keep getting an error, and when I use the google search at the top I can't find anything related toward the 1720. Is this something that can even be fixed? kexts are posted somewhere on the forum here. Luckily Sonotone incorporated them in his latest Dell patcher. Last item on the list. Olotiar
TheGreatDeceiver, how did you get rid of your mouse artifacts? I use Kalyway updated to 10.5.6, EFI v9, stocks 10.5.6 AppelIntelGMA*.kext and an old IntelIntegratedFrambuffer (probably responsible of theses artifacts) but I don't wanna have to do the mouse trick on boot. Is it possible ? Is it safe ? See my sig for more details One more thing ... do you know how to get the Apple booting logo in 1280x800 ? Tweaking the settings in boot.plist does not work. I thinks it's due to the fact my screen is "Unknow Monitor" in About this mac -> More info -> Graphic card / Monitor Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/15474-guide-dell-inspiron-6400940015201720e1405e1505e1705-intel-core-duo/page/83/#findComment-1097056 Share on other sites
CDRacingZX6R
The program worked great, but now I got another question for you GD? Is there a way to uninstall or remove the SD Card Kext? After I installed it, the computer seems to be screwing up. The card works kind of, but it caused everything to slow down and even frooze up on me a few times after working flawlessly. Is there an easy way for a tech challenged person to get rid of it until maybe a more stable version comes out later? Or maybe a way to disable it similar to computer management in windows? That way whatever its doing to cause the slow down and freezing can be shut down unless I really need to use it? I really appreciate all your help, you have made this whole process possible for me cause I was totally confused until I stumbled into this thread. The script is somewhere by itself, but I don't know the link. not sure about the boot logo. never looked at details of that, sorry. No clue either. As far as I know it's been running smoothly, but I have no prior mac experience to really draw from. No stuttering or major hang ups after it boots and loads everything completely. Itunes, Iphoto, etc all run super fast. Very rarely do I ever slow down to a speed that is noticeable. From the very first install with the Iatkos 5i, I enabled everything for the most part. Probably things I didn't even need and maybe something offset something else? Like I enabled speed step A/B as well as SATA/IDE (all options), and it shows it as running from 800/1200 as soon as I make it do work, etc. Not sure if it's actually working, but it seems like it. If there were major problems, I'm assuming that even with no prior mac experience I'd notice the lag and stuttering? Cause it would probably drive me nuts right? Thank you! first. some of your questions may be already answered here. sonotone made a Dell patcher for us all. 1) your wireless may not work. I know 1390 and 1395 work. Intels are known not to work. I got my 1390 on ebay for cheap. 2) you only get 1 finger scrolling on the E1505 3) see above. I do not think it will work 4) yes, but you need to prepare your laptop and partition. See sonotone's patcher. the same post contains the cds you need to be able to boot a retail DVD 5) these are releases of OSX builts that address specific hardware configurations. Some are trying to be very broad and try to work on as many hardware configurations as possible, some are more narrow. iPC's release is one of the best I think and I've heard some E1505 users report successful installations with it. good luck btw. when you are upgrading your hdd, also think about upgrading your cpu. I encourage you to get a core2duo. You will see an incredible performance boost. Also, despite the fact that Dell tells you you can only install 2Gb, the system will take 2x2Gb (the board will only allow 3.2Gb, but still more than 2). Castortroy2008
if you had written 10.5.6 I would give sth that works 100%. I had the identical problem and I was able to fix it by deleting AppleHPET.kext from extensions. again, this worked for me under 10.5.6 and may not do it under 10.5.2. be aware that you loose the capability to wake the system from sleep via usb device when you delete this kext. but you got gma950 and can't do that anyway (therefore no harm to delete it). good luck is it possible that you have AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext running after the 10.5.6 upgrade? that put my system to its knees. delete it. excellent and thank you for posting your results with iPC 10.5.6. I wasn't sure which of the many releases of 10.5.6 to download. this makes the decision easy. Thanks for your help. I have an almost perfect install of ipc 10.5.6 on my dell 6400 gma950- dual core studder free and sound working with dell post installer v4 still no wifi but I am using the belkin F5D7050 v4000 usb wifi stick and the driver from ZD (ZDA211MAC). CDRacingZX6R
New problem GD, maybe you could steer me in the right direction. Did a fresh install today, and I left the ethernet cable in my dell 1720. Was using it for something else, and before when I would install it would detect my wireless automatically and gave me no issues. Now if I remove the cable, go into the airport settings I cant get it to scan (well it will scan, just wont find anything) any wireless networks or switch on in general. Is there something I'm doing wrong? If that doesn't help delete that one too and add a new one with default settings (let it try to do automatic). CDRacingZX6R
Out of sheer embarrassment at my stupidity, I will not say why my wifi wasn't being detected. Got one more question for you GD. Not sure if you know much in this area, but you seem to know at the least, a little bit of everything. After getting my video out to work perfectly (after following your links), since then I've reinstalled probably 10 or so times after that trying various things, I couldn't duplicate my results. I'm not certain why. I do have a carbon copy cloner backup of the working version, and have attempted to restore it a few times. All of these times seemed to have failed. My order of operations (just to check if I'm at least doing this part right): 1) Insert iatkos distro disk, and boot it up. 2) Go to disk partitioner, and partition the drives. 3) Go to the restore tab in partitioner, and select my backup image and it's destination. 4) Hit apply, wait a few hours (60 gigs total, should have just backed up the install itself instead of all my {censored} with it). 5)Reboot. Then the problem comes in. I get the blinking curser in the left hand side, and nothing happens. After searching around it seems that I might be missing boot files? Or something isn't setup right to tell my hard drive to boot? I saw a few tips in my search, but they seemed to revolve around use of a flash drive and a few that didn't. I don't have a flash drive, and the others didn't seem to fix it. Do you know of what I might be able to try in order to get my back up to boot properly? So I can go back to having a normal life? I got greedy and screwed with my working version when I should have just left well enough alone. I swear to god I installed it (rather fresh, or rather from back up) 20 or times in the last two days. No clue what settings I did to get the video out working the first time, but I can't seem to do it again. Here is what I would try. You should be able to boot to the hdd via iatkos disk. when it starts to boot hit F8 (before it starts booting from the dvd) then you need to choose which partition to boot from. at the kernel prompt type: rd=disk0s1 (disk 1 partition 1) if you know your osx is on another partition try 2 or 3... (I assume you only have one disk). Once you are in your OSX on the hdd you should try to install a bootloader. I would try iPCs pcefi9 installer. edit 1: maybe better to do this first: read this thread which explains what to do and what you need to get the bootloader back. this is a known problem btw. when people use their time machine backup. but the above should work too. you basically load the darwin bootloader from the dvd and then point it to a different root disk. rboone
This is my step by step installation of iAtkos i5 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 upgrade, please read it before trying. This is without sound, I did not care about the sound issues until I finished upgrading, then I just installed the one from Sonotone's Dell Laptop Post Installer (Sigmatel 9200) repair permissions reboot and I had sound. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 6400, with a 1.6 core duo, 2gb ram, GMA 950 graphics card. I have no idea if I was lucky enough to get this going or not, all I know is that it worked twice on my computer, once on my test partition and on my real partition, you may wanna clone the partition after the installation of 10.5.5 or not. I based all of this on info on posts by InkBlot and of course TheGreatDeceiver. Of course all the people whose hard work is the result of all the applications, patches, and experience that exist in this forum. Thank you. In System Preferences > Sharing > Activate both Screen Sharing (on Computer Settings > check VNC viewers may control the screen with password: "type password here")and Remote Login just to be sure in case something goes wrong to ssh to the computer and try to fix it. Download the 10.5.6 do not download and install... just download. Download the stock 10.5.6 GMA 950 drivers from here Really important since you will have the "my usb drives do not mount" issue afterwards as I did, but with the help of TheGreatDeceiver from one of hihs previous posts on how he upgraded I saved these following kexts. Backup from /System/Library/Extensions/ System.kext AppleACPIPlatform.kext AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext IONetworkingFamily.kext seatbelt.kext Prep: Kext Helper, type in the password and put in this file (InkBlot) A terminal window: sudo su then type in your password. now enter the command: while sleep 1; do rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext; done It will just sit there waiting to catch the kext and delete it, that's why you need to enter the su password. Open Disk Utility.app and point to your installation Partition. Now, here comes the fun part... with those 3 things open: terminal waiting, Kext Helper with password+kext and Disk Utility ready to go, Install the update , when the updater finishes do NOT reboot, check if the terminal did the job by checking in /System/Library/Extension/ if you cannot find AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext it did the job. Install the missing kext to avoid having to connect a USB keyb+mouse Repair permissions. NOTE: At this point if you decide to continue you will see a black screen, that's why you need a device capable of accessing your computer via VNC. Now you can reboot. Remeber the good old cpus=1 flag... now you will use it again. The computer will restart, type cpus=1 and then after a few secs it will turn off again, do not worry, it does that, or mine did for that matter. When the computer restarts, cpus=1 again... last time I promise. This is why you need to turn screen sharing on. With your preferred device access your videoless mac using the VNC program of your choice, I used my iPhone since that was the only other device with a wireless adapter and VNC app, I used this just for monitoring the process. Type in the password on the laptop's keyboard and login. Run Dell Laptop Postinstaller again choosing the 9.6 kernel version, althought you're using a 9.5 kern, I really do not know if installing the 9.5 again would work... and now most importantly install the Intel GMA 950 driver, repair permissions and reboot. Now you can forget about the cpus=1 flag for good. You will see a 1024x768 resolution, don't worry, unzip the stock drivers you downloaded earlier and install everything with Kext Helper, you may also want to install the 5 kexts you should have saved earlier. System.kext AppleACPIPlatform.kext AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext IONetworkingFamily.kext seatbelt.kext Repair reboot enjoy. And thank all the people without whose help we would not be running 10.5.6. Does Sleep work with this setup? I have been unable to get it to work using the iPC universal 10.5.6 and was thinking about reloading using another method. Right now I have everything working except for sleep. When I close my lid I can not get the machine to come back. I have a hack using insomniax but I really want it to sleep. Deep sleep/Hiberante would be even better. Yuriy Havryliv
Here is my story with Dell 6400: I'm using iDeneb 1.4 (10.5.6) + Inspiron_PCEFIV9_for_Hard_Disk.dmg After installation i got black screen. First step to fix it was to remove GMA kexts and Frame Buffer kext. It was a real problem to have GMA 950 to work. Sonotones driver didn't work for me - Just black screen. And with internal display - black lines on display. The same with stock 10.5.6 drivers. The first step to fix it was os86tools. I tried driver updates for video card and got ability to change resolution but without QE. So after several tries I understood that driver from osx86tools gave me just Frame Buffer kext. So I added stock 10.5.6 GMA drivers without Internal Buffer kext. - Now everything works - I have Open GL support and Quarcz Extreme. There are some problems left When i do kextcache -c I'm getting this bash-3.2# kextcache -c 11IOCDBDevice is not compatible with its superclass, 9IOService superclass changed? kextcache: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleSym8xx.kext 18IOPlatformFunction is not compatible with its superclass, 8OSObject superclass changed? kextcache: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHWClock.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleEMacClock.kext 18IOPlatformFunction is not compatible with its superclass, 8OSObject superclass changed? kextcache: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHWClock.kext/Contents/PlugIns/ApplePulsar.kext 18IOPlatformFunction is not compatible with its superclass, 8OSObject superclass changed? kextcache: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/IOI2CMotionSensor.kext 11IOADBDevice is not compatible with its superclass, 9IOService superclass changed? kextcache: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleADBKeyboard.kext 18IOPlatformFunction is not compatible with its superclass, 8OSObject superclass changed? kextcache: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/IOI2CPulsar.kext Can't find superclass for 19AppleMediaBayATANub : 16AppleMacIODevice kextcache: a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMediaBay.kext bash-3.2# The second problem is with Broadcom440x Ethernet it hands some time. Looks like when laptop is idle for some time or after when I scp a big file. So I need to reboot to make it work. And the third problem is Sleep. I tried a lot but no luck. Currently I have hibernatemode 1 and also i switched off "Use secure virtual memory" in System Preferences ->Security So my pc goes to sleep (blinking green light) but when press power button it doesn't wake up. If somebody can comment on problems that I have would be nice Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/15474-guide-dell-inspiron-6400940015201720e1405e1505e1705-intel-core-duo/page/83/#findComment-1104384 Share on other sites
TheGreatDeceiver
Does Sleep work with this setup? I have been unable to get it to work using the iPC universal 10.5.6 and was thinking about reloading using another method. Right now I have everything working except for sleep. When I close my lid I can not get the machine to come back. I have a hack using insomniax but I really want it to sleep. Deep sleep/Hiberante would be even better. first: not necessary to include the entire original (too long) post in your question. hard too read. second: sleep works with any setup as long as you have pcefiv9 correctly installed and hibernatemode 1. The system will only do deep sleep with a gma950. if you close your lid or get the system to sleep via apple menu it writes the contents to the disk and shuts down (power light off). when you turn the system back on it starts kernel wake and you start where you left. However, your system will greet you with a black screen. you need to wake the display via expose mouse trigger (a corner of your screen e.g.). Here is my story with Dell 6400:I'm using iDeneb 1.4 (10.5.6) + Inspiron_PCEFIV9_for_Hard_Disk.dmg After installation i got black screen. First step to fix it was to remove GMA kexts and Frame Buffer kext. It was a real problem to have GMA 950 to work. Sonotones driver didn't work for me - Just black screen. Currently I have hibernatemode 1 and also i switched off "Use secure virtual memory" in System Preferences ->Security So my pc goes to sleep (blinking green light) but when press power button it doesn't wake up. If somebody can comment on problems that I have would be nice 1st: sonotone's gma kexts work (see post above). it also installs a script that wakes the display from sleep when you login (black screen problem). 2nd: lots of people have the same problem. I have not seen a permanent solution for this yet. I am using wifi entirely. 3rd: sleep see above, the only sleep you will get is deep sleep. you already set your hibernatemode to 1, which is correct. when you send your notebook to sleep it should write the ram to disk and shut down completely with the power light off (no blinking). the fact that yours is still blinking indicates that you do not have the correct hibernatemode set. Here is a widget that will take your notebook to hibernate if you still have problems. More about sleep modes here. The other problem you may have is that pcefiv9 is not installed correctly. It is working OK here with sonotone's patcher and pcefiv9. You also may want to try the latest voodoo kernel with the appropriate system.kext. But, even if you get deep sleep to work you will be greeted with a black screen after kernel wake. you need to set a hot corner in expose to enable wake screen on mouse trigger (pick a corner of your screen). Once your system comes back to a black screen you need to move your mouse (blind of course) to the corner, maybe a few times to wake the screen. CDRacingZX6R
I think I'm giving up. I suck far too much at this. After loading my backup, and trying to boot VIA the disk F8 method I'd get panic screen while loading. No matter what I tried. Another odd thing was I kept getting fragmented or small partitions on my drive. Even after formatting it to one partition, it wouldn't take care of it. Assuming maybe it was just something with the disk, I even attempted used Gparted, and it would show that it's been formatted and nothing else. Only until I used the Windows 7 formatter (gave up and decided to just get the computer working in some capacity) did I see all the extra partitions varying in size. I'm assuming that some mini partitions were effecting the booting problems I had, but I'm not sure. Towards the end, even when I would do a fresh install and try that route again, I started getting the blinking courser up at the left hand corner, whereas before it only happened when I tried to restore an old backup. Maybe one of those little partitions I didn't see were screwing my installs. Not sure though. I was about 2 seconds from going office space style on my dell... Then I relized it's not the dells fault. I am after all installing something that wasn't meant for it on it. Thanks for all the help though GD. You should get paid for all the tech support. If I ever give it a go again, hopefully you will still be around for advice.
