composer
On some of my applications, they take forever to load. Am using a AMD64 3200 with SSE2 ONLY and SSE3 emulation running OSX 10.4.5. Am wondering since I do have a 939 motherboard would I see an improvement swithing to a dual core X2 or would I be better off building a machine that is INTEL CHIP and Chipsets? I want the mac or macintosh (via hack) only for Final Cut pro. Here are my lowly benchmarks. Beta drivers from macVIDIA. AMD Enabler 10.4.5 nforce3 I am writing this as I saw someone with a X2 nforce3 chipset that had beat a DUAL G5 PPC. Yaroze
Are the applications you are trying to run PowerPC apps? Because if they are then they are being emulated which makes them slow.

composer
Well my score looks ok, but the FPU is low low low.....lack of SSE3? Would I be better of with a INTEL CPU SSE3 and on-board GPU? Would it work for / with final cut of would a X2 chip help out and if so, by how much, especially in FPU and universal binary versions? thanks

Clay Garland
AMD is better. What else is there to say Not any more. I've been running a woodcrest chip in a server box and I can say with complete honesty that it beats up on everything that AMD has ever released. Opterons et al. Takes them to the woodshed. Takes them to the woodshed. just a point to consider here.. that Mac OS X supports the INTEL processors as the basic. But on the other hand we have AMD too running the same Mac OS X.. Hence the AMD users should also consider here that how lucky they r to run it.. as some of the Processor Instructions differ with that of INTEL.. Also one thing, that it will be too optimistic for AMD users to expect Extra Ordinary results with PPC apps ,. as they might have a better emulation performance under ROSETTA for Intel processors.. as Apple applies its strategies to make a unique platform for their OS. Eventhough AMD excels in other Operating Systems as compared to Intel counterparts.. it will definitely not be Mac OS X until and unless Apple switches to AMD.. toddicus
make sure you're running FCP 5.1 the universal binary, it'll make a huge, huge difference. I have it on my macbook and I have seen it on a Pentium D 805 2.66 Ghz, runs great, (I know these bost have SSE3). With the universal app you shouldn't have any trouble running FCP on your AMD. But in the end the most compatible set up is going to be intel.
Guest Snowski
I consider myself very lucky to even be able to run this great OS on my PC. When I use Vista it does show that my rig is ment to run windows but besides FW issues I can't complain about OSX performance. And of course when using OSX you start to realize Windows is mainly a gaming OS. Plenty of peeps using s939 X2 AMD's here and on Zeph's board without issues so we're still good to go for now. Have fun with it!
QuietOC
The only fear about building a intel board with ON BOARD GMA is will it be strong enough for FINAL CUT pro? Cheap Intel P35 chipset motherboard $70-$90 Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140 $70 or Intel Celeron E1200 $58 -- easy to overclock either to 3.2GHz 4GB of DDR2 800 $70 Radeon X1550 $17 (maybe splurge $15 more for a HD 2400 Pro) SATA HD and DVD If some of the newer GMAs were working in OSX an integrated graphics motherboard (G33 or G35) would be more attractive.
