Lack of power can limit your upgrade options in the future. As mentioned previously, you need 3-channel RAM, it's 3x1GB or 3x2GB minimum. If you're going to OC, the 920 really benefits from faster RAM. Try 1600MHz. Nice heatsink, but make sure you get the 1366 bolt-thru kit, as I don't believe it'll fit OOTB. Additionally, I'd be wary of attempting 4GHz. Although there are plenty of reports of that OC, even one at 4.2GHz, the long-term reliability is in question. MaaseyRacer
I would look into at least a 700 or 800W power supply, and expect to spend a little more for a good one. It will allow you to run that graphics card and several drives. JaE-V
bigger psu, 1600Mhz memory, as previously mentioned go triple channel, 3 or 6 gigs or 12 lol...looks like a sweet build Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/140797-2000-core-i7-workstation-gaming/#findComment-997886 Share on other sites
rgb
Thanks all repliers for the info. *loybond Due to budget concern, i could only buy 8GB ram at this moment. Despite performance deduction, is there any problem if using 8GB (2*4)? *digital_dreamer Could you recommend any PSU for my config? Also i see you are running system familiar as my coming system. Is all ports fully work? Do you find any problem (kernel panic, freeze, software crash)? LogicalUser
from what i've read, the core i7 platform requires triple channel ram, installed in 3's rather than in pairs. its not the same thing as dual channel ram, pretty sure you need to buy brand new triple channel ram made specifically for this purpose as for power supplies, i'd recommend finding a good PSU in the $50-100 range try sites like these for detailed PSU reviews http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/page/power http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/140797-2000-core-i7-workstation-gaming/#findComment-998728 Share on other sites
french squared
correct on the ram. You must have three match sticks. If it is a budget issue then drop to 6gb of ram. Sorry but it just wont work without 3 matched. Seggybop
That's not true. I'm using 2x2gb with my 920 right now because it was the best I could get for the money, and it's working in dual channel mode. 2 DIMMs will work in dual-channel mode. 3 or 6 will work in triple-channel. If you have > 3 but less than 6 the memory bandwidth will be triple-channel until the capacity of the first 3 DIMMs is exceeded, and then it will drop to (iirc) single-channel. It will certainly not fail to operate, and memory speed doesn't have a huge effect on many tasks. Synaesthesia
Actually Dual channel works well, so get 2x4gb for 8gb and upgrade to 12gb if you want to later.
