Hi there

I want a config for SOHO (photo+final cut editing) and light gaming.

What do you guys think?

Is it 100% working for OSX86? (vanilla kernel, QE/CI, front usb, 1394, audio in/out, Dual GBE Ethernet with Jumbo Frame)

Intel Core i7 920 (2.66GHz) CPU/8M BOX (will overclock to 4GHZ)

Thermalright HR01X heatskin

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 X58,DDR-III Motherboard

XFX PV-T98W-YDFH 9800GTX+ 512MB DDR3 VGA

Highpoint rocketraid card

A-DATA DDR-3 1333MHz 8G Ram

Firewire 800 card

ANTEC P182 Case (Special Edition)

Antec Neopower 550w

Seagate 1.5TB x6

Pioneer dvd 212 x3

You should probably get triple channel DDR3, as in 3 x 2 GB or 6 x 2 GB to start with

  • Don't go cheap on PSU power; you need more power. Lack of power can limit your upgrade options in the future.
  • As mentioned previously, you need 3-channel RAM, it's 3x1GB or 3x2GB minimum.
  • If you're going to OC, the 920 really benefits from faster RAM. Try 1600MHz.
  • Nice heatsink, but make sure you get the 1366 bolt-thru kit, as I don't believe it'll fit OOTB.
  • Additionally, I'd be wary of attempting 4GHz. Although there are plenty of reports of that OC, even one at 4.2GHz, the long-term reliability is in question.

Best of wishes,

MAJ

Thanks all repliers for the info.

Due to budget concern, i could only buy 8GB ram at this moment. Despite performance deduction, is there any problem if using 8GB (2*4)?

Could you recommend any PSU for my config?

Also i see you are running system familiar as my coming system. Is all ports fully work? Do you find any problem (kernel panic, freeze, software crash)?

from what i've read, the core i7 platform requires triple channel ram, installed in 3's rather than in pairs.

its not the same thing as dual channel ram, pretty sure you need to buy brand new triple channel ram made specifically for this purpose

as for power supplies, i'd recommend finding a good PSU in the $50-100 range

That's not true. I'm using 2x2gb with my 920 right now because it was the best I could get for the money, and it's working in dual channel mode.

2 DIMMs will work in dual-channel mode.

3 or 6 will work in triple-channel.

If you have > 3 but less than 6 the memory bandwidth will be triple-channel until the capacity of the first 3 DIMMs is exceeded, and then it will drop to (iirc) single-channel.

It will certainly not fail to operate, and memory speed doesn't have a huge effect on many tasks.
