Eee Monitor iMac rival

ASUS' Eee Monitor today has been captured in official photos that confirm the system to be the company's direct answer to the iMac, according to LAPTOP. The all-in-one computer confirms earlier teaser photos and reveals a design that appears influenced by Apple's Cinema Displays and aluminum iMac computers, with an easel-like stand and backmounted ports; unlike either device, however, it should have side-mounted USB ports, a card reader, and a Denon-made stereo speaker system on the front.

Sometimes innovation should just stay in bed. I'm not even sure the word innovation applies, here. I do feel mean saying this but... what a bitty Frankenstein of a mess. The iMac is smooth lines and quality materials. With Macs it's as though a designer came here from another planet fifty years more advanced than our own; no one has come close to bringing out something that looks substantially better. Mac hardware doesn't need Leopard to sell it, it sells itself.

you took the words out of my mouth..

There is a difference in what Apple does with their systems, than what ASUS does. Apple doesn't use low line crappy materials, instead they use materials that handle pretty well under stress. From metal, to plastic. Where as Asus, Asus have always looks from the budget consumer, to the high end consumer. Which is why Asus laptops are such a big hit. $500 for an all in one like this, which specs for this thing haven't even been confirmed yet. But only believed to be bases on the Atom. At this price, it obviously is not trying to compete with the Imac, by using such things as plastic for it's material. Also consider that this machine is low on power consumption.

Is it me or does it seem that Apple has taken ALL of the finest designers? One would think that a company would come along and apply some grand beauty to PC's. There are so many great designers out there. But I guess it all boils down to $$$ in the end. We got some new HP desktops at work and they just look like some 1991 POS.

Ahh....if they were only beige

True, but then when you take away the name of BMW, mercedes, Apple, you have just a car, and a computer. Nothing special then really. The looks of the computer won't change the way it performs. It might help by getting better airflow inside the case, but won't do anything special for it. The futuristic-super-cool-slick-gadget society is nothing more than the media, and televisions, and movies. As long as the machine is efficient, cost effective, and decent qualities, unless you need to make the computers available to the public use(Even then, only a few types of business' will actually need a computer that looks good, say a coffee shop, or just a hangout), the looks of the computer doesn't matter. I also think that most of the cases that PC companies use are ugly, I think that some aren't.(Like HP. Hp cases have always had this nice look to me...Not the workstations and business class computers though). That's why I build my own computer. I can choose the case I want for it. Does that mean everyone does? No. Does that mean everyone else should? No, it's up to everyone what they want to do. And by your post saying your work got those new HP computers in, they are being sold at a reasonable rate of sale, and get results.

HP primarily caters towards the business class. They aren't made to look pretty, they're made to be efficient and do the job as much as possible.

I understand that. But the overwhelming majority of PC manufacturers provide a paltry, ugly set of options as far as aesthetics go. My point is that Apple has done for the personal computer what BMW & Mercedes (Toyota even) has done for the automobile...what IKEA and Danish designers have done for home decor...heck, even Target has done for mundane standard goods...and that is adding style to ordinary life.

Functionality with style for the everyday use items. It's too bad that in the "business environment" we have to have ugly efficient items that get the job done. I just think that utility can have some sort of sleekness to it without adding too much to the cost. Maybe I'm too much of a visual person and maybe even a bit superficial. But c'mon. I want to be in the futuristic-super-cool-slick-gadget society that I read about in the magazines & books and see in the movies. Why can't things just function well and look pretty kick ass in the process?

Fast forward 120 years...

Microsoft still exists and PC manufacturers are still making ugly, utilitarian products to be efficient and do the job as much as possible.

Not all HP products are ugly, actually, HP makes some of the most well designed computer hardware other than Apple. The best I've seen from HP is it's Blackbird 002 elite system which IMHO even takes over the Mac Pro in looks. Check it out:

I would take that over a Mac Pro any day.

OMG!!!! This HP case ROCKS :D

Yeah, but the Exhilaration edition which is $6600, check out the specs:

Liquid cooled Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770

Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280's in SLI mode

Voodoo approved NVIDIA nForce 790i SLI motherboard

2GB Corsair DDR3 1600MHz memory

Creative Audio Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional

Super Multi Blu Ray disc drive and HD DVD-ROM drive

Windows Vista Ultimate

The most awesome case the PC world has ever seen :)

Other than in terms of the OS, I think one of these would pwn the Mac Pro, the price might be a bit high but I mean $6600 isn't too outrageous considering that you can configure a Mac Pro up to $20,000 :)
