Simple, if your laptop supports Quartz Extreme, Core Image, and has a GMA900, post it here.

Edit: Some people are having trouble understanding what the qualifications are. Your laptop must be able to boot Mac OS X without an external display attached and be able to use both Quartz Extreme and Core Image. If you only need to have an external monitor the first boot to "enable" the main LCD, that is fine, but please only post laptops that will do both QE and CI on their own after modifications are completed.

Known Good List:

Dell Inspiron 6000*

HP nx6110

* Working for some, not for others, proceed with caution

hp Pavillion dv1331se. using dlink usb for wireless. seems to need external monitor plugged in to "activate" accelleration...or has this been fixed and i don't know about it? <_>

No, the purpose of this thread is to make a list of laptops that do not have the problems your system does.

Are you getting QE and CI with BIOS 1.60?

Acctually my BIOS seems to be 1.20 1/24/2005

I enablet QE+CI by modifiying the AppleIntelIntegr* and AppleIntel915 kexts and booting with an external monitor. There is a thread about it somewhere. Can´t get to boot QE+CI without external monitor. I´ll see about the other (1.6) BIOS

Yeah, try updating to 1.60... but, no promises.

This thread is only for people who's main display works with QE and CI (or if it works after an inital boot with an external monitor, but not requiring an external monitor every boot).

Damn, why did I had to buy the Inspiron 6000 with a ATI X300 graphics card? <_ well i just wait until the ati drivers are working>

That will be awhile... Don't expect ATI or Nvidia to release drivers until a Mac is released that has an upgradeable graphics card... which may not be until 2007.

I've updated the first post... if you have a nx6110 or Inspiron 6000 and find that it doesn't meet those qualifications please post so I can take it off the list.

I tried out Deadmoo's stuff early on with my 6000 and never could get USB to work. Is that still an issue?

I haven't heard of any similar issues... though Deadmoo's install is probably the most unreliable way to diagnose problems. His install was not clean, not at the setup window, and already had accounts made.

Try using a -f at the Darwin bootloader, see if that clears things up. Try repairing permissions. Run kextstat and see what USB drivers are loaded.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 w/ a 1920x1200 LCD and a 915GM GPU. It does NOT work. After modifying the PCI device id in the AppleIntel915 kext, I get the blank blue screen on every bootup unless I have an external monitor connected.

Should I try something else, or is this the dead end?

Well excuse the hell out of me...sheesh. AFAIK, for $1100 USD brand freakin' new, that is hardly what I'd consider "problematic" since my "Power"book was $2K and slow as monkey bawlz...

Perhaps thread should have been called "Working Out Of The Box with no patches, etc."

No, it's simply a thread for people that want QE and CI to work without having an external display connected, and want to know what models will do this.

Nobody said you did anything wrong by reporting the information you gave, it's simply a matter of your laptop is not as attractive as the ones listed in this thread for running Mac OS X because it cannot do QE and CI on its own without constantly having a second display. There's no need to be rude.

Try updating your BIOS and also try the detect displays method (if you haven't already). There also may be a key on your keyboard to switch monitor modes between mirroring and actually having a second display, try a combination of that and detect displays.

It is also possible that since you don't have the standard WXGA display that the UltraSharp (or WUXGA) display you have may be sending signals Mac OS X doesn't understand.

I've added a note that not everyone is having success with the Dell Inspiron 6000. I know that it isn't the UltraSharp displays either because I just ordered a machine identical to others and it does not work.

And yes, I have tested the BIOS revisions to see if that was the fault.

Wow.

Good thread.

And so we're back to square one?

Nobody cares about this??

So the HP nx6110 is the holy grail?

Millions of laptops.

Tons of GMA900 models.

And just one... HP nx6110.

This is hard to believe.

SUNSEEKER - When you say "perfect", I would hope that means good sound and line in too?

DARKTEN - despite HATONCATs comments, it wasn't clear to me by the wording in your post if you needed to "activate" the laptop display every time or only after initial os x load and conf file editing.

HATONCAT - have you narrowed down any differences between the inspiron 6000 models?

one last thought - those little VGA dongles with dip switches... they've been known to work before in cases where headless macs needed to be fooled a monitor was attached to boot. some are active, some are passive.

carry one in your bag, plug it in only when you reboot (like, maybe once every 2 weeks for me).

whats the procedure now? what is the earliest the external monitor can be unplugged?

here are so random ones..

if someone could test this theory it would open up a lot more possibilties...
