Without having an external monitor plugged in every boot? My DV4155CL refused to work on the main display... I'd be surprised if the 4000 did too.

My DV4000 custom made works with CI and QE with out the need of an external monitor. only problem is that it can freeze on the light blue screen when booting. however a restart from within WinXp seems to help this problem somewhat. So yes, if you want it to boot 100% of the time you need an external monitor. but i can get it to boot with out one one out of two or three boots. while it is kinda annoying to have to reboot, it's a minor inconvience considering i have beautiful CI and QE when it boots.

Try updating your BIOS and also try the detect displays method (if you haven't already). There also may be a key on your keyboard to switch monitor modes between mirroring and actually having a second display, try a combination of that and detect displays.

It is also possible that since you don't have the standard WXGA display that the UltraSharp (or WUXGA) display you have may be sending signals Mac OS X doesn't understand.

SUCCESS!! Updating my Inspiron 6000's BIOS to A09 fixed the problem! Now I can boot into OS X without an external monitor. I have full 1920x1200 res, Core Image, and Quartz Extreme. This rocks! Now I just need to get my wireless working.

So, if anyone else out there has an Inspiron 6000 and is having the blank blue screen w/o an external monitor problem, download the A09 BIOS update from Dell. It fixed mine.

That's some good news to hear! Have you tested it enough to make sure it's not just lucky.

My laptop never takes more than 2 times to boot normally without external monitor.

So It's OK for me at the moment.

But I think i'll update my MSI S260's BIOS, just the be sure :D

Sadly, it does not work everytime. Sometimes I still get the blank blue screen. However, booting into WinXP first and then restarting into OS X seems to fix that. And, sometimes a cold boot does work. So, still not perfect, but a helluva lot better than where I started.

The thing that probably made a difference is that this BIOS update upgraded the Intel 915GM video BIOS. I forget the version number it updated it to, if I run across that I'll post it here.

Dell Inspiron 6000 has GMA900? I thought they were made with an ATI X300 inside using Hypermemory support.

You can order them w/ either one. The ATI is the more expensive, faster, "better" option, but the GMA900, from what I've heard, works much better in Linux, so I purposely ordered that.
