  1. 1. How many of you have experenced overheating due to fans not turning on on your laptop?

    • YES I have to go through steps to get my fans on. See question below.
      93
    • No I have no fan issues or I have intermitate fan issues.
      46
  2. 2. What do you have to do to deal with your fan not turning on?

    • Power unplug, or sleep trick. Seems to work on Toshibas
      28
    • Reboot when temp reaches certain number to get bios to turn fans on. Only Lenovo option that works
      44
    • I use software to handle my heat issues like coolbook because my fans never seem to spin fast when needed.
      11
    • My fans are on 100% full blast and are loud all the time. So I never overheat but I'm also losing my hearing.
      56
    • I found a kext that fixes my fan issues and I am not sharing the info with the 100's of affected users here. You suck SHARE your info.

I have been dealing with the fan on my laptop not turning on for some time. I have gotten upto the point where the only time the fans will not turn on is during a cold boot (system off overnight). So the system boots with no fan on and thus remains off & overheats. If the bios is able to turn the fan on it will remain on. I am trying to fix the cold boot scenario if I can.

Currently I am using 10.5.2 with ACPIplatform 1.2.1 with the following plugins included inside it.

All are version 1.2.1 which is the newest.

ACPIPS2Nub.kext

AppleACPIButtons.kext

AppleACPIEC.kext

AppleACPIPCI.kext

AppleACPIPowerSource.kext

I also have version 1.1.0 however I am not using this version.

This version has a lot more plugs inside it in addition to the ones above.

AppleACPILPC.kext

AppleACPIThermal.kext

ApplePCIConfigurator.kext

I have also deleted AppleCPUThermo.kext (which had NO Impact) & AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext (which will not allow my system to boot if in place).

These are all the files that I know of that deal with cpu temp and the fan. PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I"M WRONG!

Excluding of course ACPICPUThrottle.kext which has to do with netkas speedstep kernel. I also have that running on my system and it runs fine. Otherwise I would have overheated much worse then I have already.

I have also tried the fn=3 flag but it appears to do nothing. I believe this flag affects ACPI but for whatever reason does nothing for me.

Here is a grep of ACPI

kextstat | grep ACPI

I am trying to narrow down what I can do about this problem and get experiences from other laptop owners. Is there something that I can try to stop the no fan cold boot problem?

THANKS ALL.

I have the AppleACPIThermal.kext inside acpiplatform (1.2.1) and also the AppleThermal.kext in extensions and the fan works without any problems after cold boot.

Have u the same issue when using the old acpiplatform kext and applethermal.kext not deleted?

Can you do two things for me.

1. post your results with kextstat | grep ACPI command.

2. Post your copy of appleacpipaltform.kext

I have never seen a version 1.2.1 that includes the AppleACPIThermal.kext inside it. I would like to give yours a try to see if it fixes my problem.

THANKS

the kextstat gives exact the same result as yours except the acpicputhrottle, since im using vanilla to be able to sleep the laptop.

i'll post my kext as soon i get my laptop back, this will be maybe tomorow or next monday

THANKS man.. I look forward to it. I tried throwing the thermocpu kext and the acpi one into my acpiplatform and it did not work.

I am really curious to see what version you have.

hey guys, i have a toshiba satellite a135-s7404 and my fan only turns on after the PC shuts itself of for getting too hot

Do you get the fan to to turn on after a reboot with the system hot? Or is it always off no matter what?

Yeah as I thought you dont have AppleACPIThermal.kext inside there. My current ACPIplatform looks exactly like yours. Shoot I was hoping you had something special that might solve this problem that me and a few others have.

I think I need a special modded kext to fix this issue. Maybe apple fan or appleblower edited is what i need.

I dont even know what those 2 kexts do actually but I would think applefan would be the right one. Anyone know for sure?

yeah, it overheats and shuts off, and when i turn it back on, the fan is on... I am using leo4all v2

SO if you reboot with the machine hot the fan stays on into OSX right?

Thats the same problem I have. Its SMC related I believe now. Still investigating this.

What? Take a close look, its in there

and after editing

<key>com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform</key>
<string>1.2.1</string>

in /System/Library/Extensions/AppleACPIPlatform.kext/PlugIns/AppleACPIThermal.kext/Contents/Info.plist to match the AppleACPIPlatform version

, its loadable, so i will report if the temparature is going down with this kext loaded or not.

You must have attached the wrong one then. It shows only these kext included in plugins. I downloaded it twice to confirm to.

ACPIPS2Nub.kext

AppleACPIButtons.kext

AppleACPIEC.kext

AppleACPIPCI.kext

AppleACPIPowerSource.kext

I also know about editing the kext to match versions thanks though. Can you attach the right one I wanna give it a shot and see what happens.

Fassel can you also post your results showing all kext loaded from a cold boot? Do a kextstat in terminal and post that. I wanna look at that and compare it to what I have loaded. Maybe you have something loaded I dont.

THANKS A Bunch

________________________________________________________________________________

Any other laptop users reading this (grrantry, kylealang, Ztardust included) I would like your help to. This cold boot no fan thing is gotta be related to either SMC somehow, ACPI somehow or simple a kext that does not get loaded like applefan. However I'm leaning toward SMC as my fan works after warm boot. I'm guessing yours is the same as mine. Please post if otherwise.

If all of you could do a kextstat in terminal and post your results we can compare them and see what if anything that shows between us all.

Also such apps as smc fan control, fan control, 8kfan control (dell) do not work for this problem (or with hacks possibly) from testing. There are SMC related kext loaded such as com.apple.driver.AppleSMC (2.0.1d2) & com.apple.driver.ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin (3.1.5d3). So in those kext I believe the problem lies. Well I hope we shall see from the feedback provided by everyone here.

And here is a comparison-chart between my Kextstat and SticMANs Kextstat...

I didn´t include kexts which are the same in both mine and SticMANs kextats, only those which were of different versions, and those which were missing...

Ztardust.. I think I know exactly why your overheating and not getting fans at all. You dont have com.apple.driver.ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin loaded at all. As you can see from lordzed & stickman and myself. We all have that loaded except you. Now how can we get that loaded and make it work on cold boot also.

I'm not sure you have the same cold boot problem I have now since you do not have ACPI_SMC. You might just have nothing loaded and you overheat regardless of when you boot. Can you confirm that?

Also I need an expert to join this to come up with what to do next. The com.apple.driver.ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin is not a real kext but a IOregistry entry. I think the real kext is AppleSMC.kext but i'm not sure. I dont know what kext or what needs to be edited for sure to fix this.

mac girl, superhai or anyone with some advanced OSX knowledge can you help me here?

I can confirm that my machine is overheating regardless of whether it's a cold or warm boot.

But at when I start the machine from cold boot at least I can hear the fans working little bit.

I assume that is controlled by the bios since I have removed the applethermal kext...

Any chance that someone here could send me this SMC kext(s?) that I am missing?

Yeah I figured you were not getting ur fans on either way. I cant send you the ACPI_SMC kext because there is not a real kext for it. They are IO registry entries that create what you see in kextstat. Could be another kext or maybe a plugin or bundle that loads that. Not sure.

See this is getting way above my head now. Last time I dealt with the IO registry Superhai helped me through it. Basically he did all the heavy lifting. We need someone of that caliber to help with this problem.

We need

1. To figure out what causes ACPI_SMC to load into kextstat?

2. Then we need to figure out how we can edit the entries in ACPI_SMC that control the cpu fan.

Once we get both of these questions figured out we can get this problem fixed. So were in the same boat. I will post here on what if anything I come up with on my end. If you get anywhere please do the same.

egrep "ACPI_SMC" -R /System/Library/Extensions/
/System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Info.plist: <string>ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin</string>

Looks like there is a kext for it.

Try to load the kext with sudo

kextload -t /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext

Holly {censored} fassl you RULE. THANKS

I did not know it was in there. Ok interesting now that I have found it. If you look at the info.plist inside ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext you see it seems to look at what computer type you have to I bet control the fan. NOT SURE total speculation.

Anyway In system profile I have a mac pro which is what my SMBIOS file declares as the computer I have. Perhaps if that were changed to mac book pro or mac book the fan would turn on more? Again total speculation.

What do you think? In any case do you think ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext holds the answer to the fan issues we are having?

No, for me Model name also is MacPro 3,1 so i dont think it has to do with the information given in Sys Profiler.

I dont know if SMC_PlatformPlugin handles the fans in some way but the Info.plist looks pretty good. There something with CPU and GPU, maybe heat detection?
