tha_toadman
Hey all, I have the ability to get a new PC at work (provided that the price is right). Does anyone have an experience or recommendations on any of the newer Dell's that are available on their website? I know I won't have 100% compatibility by any means but I would like to be pointed in the right direction as to which model might suit my needs. All I really need is the flat panel (analog would work) and a machine with working ethernet (which is most critical). I'd like to use OSX for my daily duties but even if I couldn't, it'd still be nice to have the most compatible PC that they offer. Finally, it's got to be sub-1000 dollar machine. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas!

INFNITE
why does it have to be a dell? can't you get an iMac?
tha_toadman
why does it have to be a dell? can't you get an iMac? yes, it has to be a dell. the reasons i can't get an iMac are (1) it costs more and (2) my company loves the on-site support with the dell machines and i'm sure it'd be really pricey with Apple. "1) It cost more" - Not really, you said under a grand - refurb Macbook=$899 or a refurb iMac=$949 or you could get a refurb Mac Mini=$649... those are all under a grand "2) on-site support" - umm three words...It's a MAC! GBK.Xscape
yea screw all these forums on what is the perfect computer of osx86 or which one is most compatible, true dells are usually some of the most compatible computers out there but why even break a sweat over it and just get an imac. like bing lax said, if you know where to look then you can get it for cheap. i got a BRAND NEW Imac from a guy that was local and it works great, all i need is more ram becuase the dam rosetta applications, mainly microsoft word, make my computer run like molasses in winter time. sHARD>>
Don't ever buy a pre-built of any brand computer. Always build it yourself or have them custom build it. In order to make the price look attractive, a pre-built always skimps in quality somewhere. Make sure you have the best parts, and get it custom. Prasys
Get Dimension 9100 [not sure XPS 3 series maybe]. Go for their Pentium D and 945P boards [if they still have it] , look out for their 945 boards , cause this one just kicks ass. SATA , ATA , sleep , USB and everything works out of the box [even Sound]. So OSX works with that. Sure I have a mac , but I need a PC to play games. Its fair and square. If you want that works get e510 series as well. It would work
tha_toadman
prasys, they have the dimension 9200 series now and the e520 series. i was leaning towards the e500 series personally but was open to suggestions. sounds like the consensus thinks that i should get a true Mac but I'd love to be in a position to POSSIBLY upgrade to Vista down the road...should the need ever arise. you think that either a 9200 or e520 that they currently offer would work? thanks! tha_toadman
i'm starting to think now that an iMac would be the easiest and best but my employer won't let me go over $1k. That is what's hold me back. btw, I don't see any offerings now for the dimension that have a 945P. bummer.
trav1085
I got my Dell Dimension 1100 custom built. It's fully compatable on everything but it's on board intel extreme 2 graphics don't support qe and ci (it's a bad card, but you can easily get a upgrade for less than $250 CAD). I got mine before Core 2 Duo was even out, so it's a Celeron D 2.6Ghz (Which is great for mediocre games and work). The price was $400 CAD, but I'm not sure if they sell it anymore (they might). But it's still a good system if you can find it. (If you upgrade ram be sure to go for 512x2 as it only has 2 ram slots)
Urbz
I thought the lowest end iMac was $999? Just checked Apple...yes, yes it is! Isn't that good enough?
