Hackintosh2000 Posted February 24, 2012 Share Posted February 24, 2012 It's been what a year since I dropped $30 on Lion? Now I'm supposed to drop another $30 for Mountain Lion? What am I getting for the expense and hassle of upgrading to Mountain Lion, Twitter integration?! If this keeps happening Cupertino is going to make Windows look even cheaper. They are also cutting the legs out from under hardware from 2009! Anyone else underwhelmed by this annoucment? Am I missing something? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
justgeeking Posted February 24, 2012 Share Posted February 24, 2012 so far using it and its running smooth even tho its in alpha stage never used a version this early and works right if your machine is configured properly its a little diff then Lion. i have Lion on a 7200 rpm drive and Mt Lion on a old apple WD 5400 rpm drive and its moving... i will post all the pro apps that are working for me so far i will link back to you.. when done doing screen shots, Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
TH3L4UGH1NGM4N Posted February 24, 2012 Share Posted February 24, 2012 Most users find the $30 (if you actually spend on it) worth it because as a Hackintosher you learn to value the OS X operating system a lot more when you spend endless nights tweaking and getting it work perfect for you. I personally don't find the price anything to debate on whether I should get in comparison to Windows upgrade prices. Again it's totally up to you but the features Apple provides in their 10.x releases more than warrants the $30 that is spent on the OS. Just my 2 cents. From reading various blogs, it seems that Apple are playing catch up with Windows and Linux which support OpenGL 4.1 as of now. Apple have decided to revamp their graphics engine with Mountain Lion by upgrading to OpenGL 3.2 (!). That is where I believe that the incompatibilities creep in as some older Mac GPUs do not support the latter versions of OpenGL (remember AirDrop issues). I'm afraid that is what you have to endure with Apple Products - this type of backward compatibilities occur with iPhone too. Now, if you have a compatible Mac, it is definitely worth upgrading to Mountain if you're surrounded by Apple Products such as iPhone or iPad. OS S is being tightly integrated with iOS. It's a shame that they don't do it in one go rather than merging functionality in bits. Mountain Lion could have been just an update but because of the incompatibilities, they had to release it as a separate product. My guess is we're gonna see a jaw-dropping affordable price tag for upgrading, or even buy-once-upgrade-for-free if they dare. (Pardon my grammar; not a native English speaker.) The more Apple profits from handheld devices, the more it dumbs down the computer/laptop experience. Biso007 Posted March 5, 2012 Share Posted March 5, 2012 I think it's a valid question for a hackintosher ... if I have an original Mac I would go for ML even the return would be little, but to go into the hassle of getting ML working perfectly like we have Lion now after nights of tweaking and testing different kexts and for what ? .. to get a launch pad that I don't think I will ever use it or a notification system that sucks already on iphone compared with the Android's one ??? ... no thx .. I always buy the legit software when it's done with all the alpha and beta testing. I personally don't learn to "value" anything that I have to spend many frustrating hours getting to work. I actually love the hackintosh moments where I use something like the ModCD and a retail copy of SL and it works 95% out of the box with no tweaks. I'm not into hackintoshing for the sake of hackintoshing. I actually use my hackintosh to run some programs that are not available on Win 7. I plan on getting Final Cut Pro X at some time. The lion upgrade seemed to offer a lot of features that would make using Final Cut Pro a much better experience. The Lion upgrade was a no brainer. But seriously... $30 on SL <2 yrs ago. $30 on Lion about a year ago, and now $30 on Mountain Lion?! If that is the case and it comes in at a more affordable price then it makes sense. I am just not to thrilled with spending $90 in <2 yrs on three OSes. SL I had to buy to start in hackintoshing. Lion came out <1 year later and was a no brainer upgrade. Lion had things like 64 bit throughput and of course the super cheap Lion Server. I bought it the minute it came out. I'm not doing that with an OS that merely offers "Twitter integration." I'm thinking about skipping this release if it is $30 and waiting a year or two for whatever comes out. If it's $10 then I will get it so I can keep up with the latest version and keep making incremental hackintosh tweaks with each release. It's easier that way.
