AirDrop - Wifi compatible cards

i installed an AR9280 in my older mac book pro, as you did. i have the same experience--it takes about 30 seconds after bootup or awakening from sleep for the card to discover my network. also, it never automatically connects to the network. i have to do it manually. this is ok when booting, but it's a pain to do every time it wakes from sleep.

i don't think its a matter of 2 antennae rather than 3. after it connects i have a strong signal.

i think it has something to do with the kext. i have added the device ID of the AR9280 to the plist in the Atheros40.kext but that doesn't help.

ironically, i have the same card in a hack and it works perfectly. same OS, same version of the kext. i didn't modify the kext with the device id--the card "just worked" when i plugged it in (using a mini pic-e adapter, of course).

sure would like to figure this out, so i don't need to drop $50 on an apple-branded broadcom card.

The two wifi cards I ordered from eBay as linked by MiniHack in post #23 arrived today and both exactly as depicted in the link. Placed one in my MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa 2.4GHz) and rebooted. Airdrop is active.

Two caveats. The AR9280 only has two aerial connectors as opposed to the three used on the existing card. I left the middle cable unattached. If your MBP was already struggling to get a connection, this might be an issue for you. I haven't changed any kexts or changed any settings, but the wifi takes a little while to connect to my default router (about 30 secs after boot up). Otherwise, all as it should be.

This only happens, or rather, happened on my Santa Rosa MBP. I also put the other AR9280 in a Macbook 2,1 with zero problems. I think it is a Lion issue. I also run Snow Leopard on my MBP and that connects automatically straight away. Updating to 10.7.1 seems to have cleared it as I don't get the delays any more and it autoconnects without any prompting from me.

i was hoping that the update to 10.7.1 would have fixed it for me, but to no avail.

just for grins, i'll download the 10.7.1 update and run it again--the first time i just took the update offered by system updates.

what's that line about doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results?!?!?

thanks

Hi Users,

Could you see any differences with the working one?

P2P firmware needed for Airdrop? It´s possible to upgrade firmware?

Any help would be great...

Thanks

Macbidouille has some news via xl8yourmac about which cards are compatible.

With regard to the BCM94322MC, you need to make sure you have this ref: 487330-001.

With regard to the AR9280, you need to have this model AR5BXB92 AGN.

eBay is pot luck as to what you get. Bonne chance a tous.

Hi,

this worked for me OOTB for the BCM94322MC card. Recognized by Lion as "Third-Party Wireless".

Not sure if it would make any difference but here is the firmware version on iMac11,1. (This might later have been updated.)

Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x8F)

Firmware Version: Atheros 9280: 2.1.8.11

The one I am using (HP Atheros 9280):

AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x8F)

Firmware Version: Atheros 9280: 4.0.55.4-P2P

  • 3 weeks later...

I got AirDrop in Finder, see Post #19 for DSDT added ARPT device.

This card should be 2.4 GHz only, thus further testing is required for full functionality, as soon as I pair it with another AirDrop capable rig.

Credits go to JBraddock.

D-Link DWA-547 Rev. 1a

Interface: PCI

Device Information: 168c:0023

Subsystem ID: 1186:3a6b

Was seen as:

Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x3A6B)

Firmware Version: Atheros 5416: 2.1.14.9

Now seen as:

Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x8F)

Firmware Version: Atheros 5416: 4.0.55.4-P2P

There is also another trick: AirDrop with unsupported Wireless or Ethernet!
