A Nonny Moose Posted August 4, 2006 Share Posted August 4, 2006 I tried booting the Dapper Drake CD and it's hanging in the startup screen. There also appear the be numerous errors on the disk itself. So right now, I am ging to order more disks (PowerPC disks being used on an iMac G3 if that helps). Maybe it's just a disk problem. dabear Posted August 5, 2006 Share Posted August 5, 2006 Hi, the live cd is pretty new, so it would not be possible to get the composition right for every machine, in one try. There are very few Linux distros I detest, but Ubuntu is on my list with a fury I have not had since Corel's distro. real men emerge. the rest ubuntu. dabear Posted August 14, 2006 Share Posted August 14, 2006 Up until Dapper, the only installation method was thru an ncurses interface or text-mode install if you will, now that dapper is out, there's two install cd's; the live cd and the alternate cd. The installation from the live cd is much faster and is by a graphical UI (either qt or gtk depending on if you are using kubuntu live or ubuntu live). While this is the preferred method of installation ('cause it's a lot easier and faster), there's still the alternate cd, which is the old text-mode cd in a new name. If the live cd fails, I suggest you'd try the alternate cd for dapper, rather than the text-mode installation disks for the previous releases (Anyway; reinstalling takes like 20 minutes, but the upgrade (using aptitude or the update-manager) is taking like 2 hours here. Because I have /home on a seperate partition, I just almost always reinstall when there's a new version out; all my settings are kept in my home directory) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guru yea, but you see, i reference pc-bsd witch unlike allmost all other bsds is easy to install and comes with a graphical installer, a gui, and theyre own proprietary .pbi in witch is like a .exe.... but yes i agree with you, and im going to download the alternate install to see if that works max Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

While Ubuntu, and Linux in general, has MUCH wider hardware support, there are still configurations that just don't play nice.
