free30
I used the above method but missed: 'do not select them all at once using shift. do not deselect anything. if System, Library, or CoreServices is accidently selected, shut down and restart Pacifist, reselect' I used SemjaZaSecUpd003.dmg to allow finder to start after reboot. If I had followed instruction would I have not had to use this file? Free30 Standing on the shoulders of giants.
quixos
free30, correct, you wouldn't have had to. the guide is standalone complete. however updating later with Semjaza files would have been a good next step, if you hadn't done it already. you ended up where you need to be. XanthraX
Don't forget, before the first reboot, to look for /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility, select the startup disk and repair the permissions, or type in terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) diskutil repairPermissions / ...or your system go freeze after the reboot. In this case, you have only one alternative, boot in safe mode and repair the permissions

robo456
The update installed fine and I ran the 'fix disk permissions in the disk utility. All seemed to go well; however the sudo command in terminal showed this: Last login: Thu Jun 15 07:37:26 on console Welcome to Darwin! apple-users-computer:~ rob$ sudo update_prebinding -root / -force We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System Administrator. In this case, you have only one alternative, boot in safe mode and repair the permissions Hi all, after two attempts to update with SecUpd, my system failed to reboot again when I can reported that some strange things happen... like after I install SecUpd with Pacifist, I cannot start any program, like Disk Utility (for permission repair) or Terminal (for permission repair under console), so I am being forced to restart the system. After reboot I cannot login my system again, either with -x or -x -s, so I have to do from -s option, wanted to repair the permission using applejack...end up with /usr/sbin/diskarbitrationd segmentation fault etc, and when I restart again with -v I noticed that besides the error msg couldn't find root user, there's also /usr/sbin/diskarbitrationd segmentation fault etc like above. Again I restart with -s option and restore finder.app (this time I backup finder.app), then restart with -v, the same error msg that is segmentation fault came appear again. So I suspect it's not that I accidentaly select coreservices in previous instalation using pacifist, it must be another issue here. Could someone help me please Thanks
WiZMaC
This Doesn't Work!!! My 3rd attempt at reinstalling Jas 10.4.6 / Intel and applying this stupid patch!!! Followed your instructions to the dot yet the bloody thing freezes after logging in. I think I'll pass on this- Be Warned :: If you are willing to loose your current working installation then try this patch regardless of whether a few got it to work or not. [uPDATE] Works! Finder.app was the culprit
quixos
this is not a patch. these directions simply describe a method to skip the installation of one file, Finder.app. it's the only file in Security Update 2006-003 that is incompatible with Intel "hobby mac" systems. if a person updates to the Security Update 2006-003, and does not overwrite their working Finder.app, there are no other files in the update that should preclude a successful reboot of the system. if some other part of the Update is causing a problem for people, it's not my problem, but i'd be interested to learn the specifics. WiZMaC
Sorry quixos- Forgot to post an update ... It works- I had to search and search until I stumbled over Jas's Finder.app backup sol Yet another happy camper! One question though- I ran update_prebinding and got this error twice: temp file missing /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM/framework/Versions/1.5.0/Libraries/libclient_redoprebinding.dylib Any ideas? ** I sincerely hope you believe that I was not trying to put your method down- As is, I'm grateful for the knowledge that both you and others are sharing with us .... quixos
boot with -s fsck -fy if there is a problem fixed, reboot with -s, and fsck -fy until no errors are found. you could give that a try. good luck.
bigjohnjr
Ok I blew it! I used pac to install the updates, I forgot to repaire premissions before rebooting and now it just hangs after rebooting. No finder, no icons, dock frozen. I tried to fix it but not being a mac guru I can't. When I reboot I type -s Then I type sudo diskutil repairpressions / It just hangs, at a black screen. The drive does whirl at first then nothing. Please help before I reinstall all over again. Thanks John
quixos
here is how it is... as much as i sympathise with you all, this is a very simple and direct method. if the directions are followed, it does only one thing. it extracts all of the Update files to their proper destinations, and avoids over-writing Finder.app with an incompatible version. that's all, it does no more. the only advice i can give related to this method of updating, comes down to restoring an overwritten Finder.app. it's possible to have pre-existing problems, that produce a bad result even following the directions exactly and correctly. gremlins exist. i suggest joining the #OSx86 (irc.macspeak.net) channel, there are real people who might be able to help you recover from errors, and also refer you to some sort of automated method that has been developed since this guide was written. good luck.
