Thanks, that was a big help. My problem now is that I get a message during the install that says "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer".

Note that I'm using my MacBook Pro but with VMware running on bootcamp with XP. I'm using the original install disk that came with the MAC.

That is a restore DVD not a retail one, and VMware does not pass through the actual machine type. This only works with retail ones. I am sure there are ways to alter the image but I don't have any details.

I have obtained an original install DVD: Mac OS X Leopard, Install DVD, Version 10.5.

I am using the instructions found at:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=172474.

I have downloaded and run setup.cmd install as instructed.

It begins to boot to the DVD but then gives *** Virtual machine kernel stack fault (hardware reset) ***

I am running this on a MacBook Pro running Windows XP and VMWare Workstation 6.5.2 build-156735.

Since I was not sure if by "real Mac" you meant "real Mac running OSX" or if you also meant "real Mac even running Windows" so I tried both for smc.present.

I have attached my .vmx file.

This morning I tried the 32 bit forms but still get the *** Virtual machine kernel stack fault *** error.

I also tried -legacy from the boot options menu (F8).

I've had success installing 10.5.6 with donk.iso, updated to 10.5.8, but I still have my mouse buttons inverted. My mouse is a "lefty" mouse from logitech, and they thought the buttons ought to be reverted also (urh!!!).
Changing the left / right mouse button setting in the preferences of osX doesn't change anything, so I'm wondering if someone had an idea on how to fix this?

I'm also wondering about any possibility to map the PC keyboard (french) more accurately - especially the various keys like @ < > [ ] {} etc. Obviously a mac keyboard has a different layout - even a french one - compared to the PC one, but is it possible maybe to "translate" inputs so that I could use my keyboard more easily, for programming for example.

Thanks!

Are you sure it is the retail version? If it is the one that came with the Mac then it is a re-install version and not the retail version. The error you are getting is the same one I got when I tried to use the CD that came with the Mac.

You are right. My mistake. It is not retail, it came with an iMAC. So, it cannot be used to install MAC OSX as per the instructions? Does it have to be a retail version of OSX?

Yes, that is what Donk told me. When I tried the retail version I got past that point but I ran into another problem. See my post above (note that I was on an actual Mac, running Windows and I used the procedure Donk told me to use (http://www.insanelym...howtopic=172474).

thanks for the reply, EDDYQ. Thats puts the matter to rest. Also, in your case you may want to update your VMWare workstation software to the latest version and then see if that works. Just a thought.

I can't seem to get this working.  Here is what I did.  Please be aware I know NOTHING about MAC.  This is my first endeavor to see what all the hype is about.

Dell PE1950 Server running Windows Server 2008 x64 and VMWare Workstation 6.5.3.

Booted to the vmdonk.iso, removed that and inserted the iAtkos v7 iso.  Entered 9f and used the -v option.  It booted, but then comes up and says the installer has failed.  Screenshot attached.

I also tried booting straight to the iAtkos v7 iso and get the same results.

FYI, I am using the Darwin.vmx template.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I had that problem with iatkos too. I didn't get any help so I tried Donk's instructions found at:
http://www.insanelym...howtopic=172474. But you need a retail version of OSX and it can't be the one that comes with the Mac. Also, note that I could not get it to work and Donk has not gotten back with me yet.

I don't monitor this thread any more as it is obsolete as far as I am concerned. Also I don't support other distros as there are too many variables and unknowns. All my work is based on running retail versions.
