OS X on the MSI Wind, Before it's Released

Numberzz

A hacker, and a member of our forums, has managed to get Mac OS X Leopard running on the MSI Wind. This is what jav had to say about getting it on his MSI Wind. It's translated from spanish.

Well, here it is. The new MSI Wind running Kalyway 10.5.2. I still have to make some adjustments, such as the resolution and the wireless card, but I couldn't stop myself from posting these images that I'm sure will get the interest from more than one person. Ethernet and Bluetooth work right out of the box, so I'm really expecting a lot from this small notebook.

All that and the MSI Wind isn't even going to be released until July 7th.

EDIT: It appears that the sound also works OTB. The resolution and wireless are the only things that we know of that don't work.

Hi all!

Thank to your help, I finally got Leopard 10.5.4 installed on my Msi Wind - It's wonderful, no problems, quick (I also installed another gb of ram)..

I only wanted to thank you and to tell that I also got worked my usb wifi dongle ( d-link DWL-G122). It was easy and so I don't need anymore to order a dell 1390 and to open the pc..

Remember.. THE USB WIFI DONGLE D-LINK DWL-G122 WORKS ON MSI WIND

Bye bye!!

Hi...

I'm a newbie here.. :D

Just thinking about buying a MSI Wind Notebook for it's lightweight, small form factor and portability...

The weight of a macbook is still too much for me to carry all day long

I don't want to open up the notebook casing and make my warranty goes away... :P

Does anyone had some experience about USB Wifi dongle(s) like Daniella?

What if I plug in d-Link DWA-130 or DWA-160?

Would it work fine???

Thank you for Paulobrien that has given a great guide to install 10.5.4! :P

BTW, do you have any link to download Kalyway 10.5.2 that are distributed freely?

Thanks in advance!

Would seriously love a "restore" type disk for the wind....

That would be awesome, with all the drivers and what not....

Makes life a whole lot easier...

It would be like OSX for the rest of us....

It's not that hard!

Check out my guide - it has a lot of steps, but it's straightforward. I've video'd the whole process too, which will be online in a bit.

I'll probably buy MSI WIND next week ....

I'm sure that I'll install MAC OSX on this netbook ( Dualboot with XP ) ... I'd like that native WLAN (RTL8187SE) works but it doesn't work yet...

I have got this USB wireless , compatible with Windows XP,VISTA , Linux ( with Ndsiwrapper ) and Leopard or Tiger :

Digicom USBWAVE 300

I'll use this USB WLAN until anyone will be able to work native WLAN...

:angel::rolleyes:

BTW One issue I have with the WLAN is it doesn't automatically rejoin the network after sleep. I have to manually select it from the airport dropdown on the toolbar. No big deal but I wondered why it happened.

If you are just using one network (e.g. your home network) you could set the IP setting manually to a static one and also your gateway and stuff. This did the trick for me on my previous notebook.

Now waiting for the Wind to arrive at the computer store I work at. We've ordered a lot. Hopefully they will arive soon.

Well, I've done a massive amount of searching and quite a bit of reading. I think I can safely (albeit sadly) say this:

Microphone / Input / Headphones are not going to work any time soon, very likely ever.

The ALC 888 and ICH7 chipset just aren't compatible with OS X. No one has gotten this working yet, and it's got both Taruga and SkippyRetard stumped from what I've read.

I tried all 4 of Skippy's ALC 888 installs, and none of them worked. I've got my fingers crossed, but I think for a while we are SOL. Someone try firing an e-mail to Taruga or Skippy with my sound dump from an earlier post and see what they say about it.......

Got everything else working great though!

May I suggest, for the brave ones.

How to get Headphones on the Wind

  1. Open up Wind Fully
  2. Find the points where speakers are connected
  3. Solder wires from points to headphone jack
  4. Disconnect Red Speaker wires from speaker
  5. Connect through a dual 2 Way switch
  6. Use switch to switch Speakers ON/OFF

I would be doing this once I get a Wind. Also this probably will be very easy to reverse, if you need warranty. Someone let me know how the Audio Sounds through headphones.

I know I'll get yelled at for this, but would all these tweaks and such be applicable to the EeePC 901 (the one with the Atom proc)? Not that I'm against the Wind, but it would be nice to have options on what kind of mini-notebook I can run OS X on.

But aside from that, keep up the awesome work!

Ouch! Just checked on ebay, about 5 times the price! :)

I can confirm that I've installed the firmware update for the camera, and PhotoBooth is no longer crashing for me on OS X. Skype also shows the video feed, although I haven't tried making a video call.

You could install the update using a flash disk version of XP, such as BartPE or similar, so don't worry about re-installing windows to your machine. (see here)

firmware update doesn't even work on the akoya (0.3mp cam). 1.3mp webcam replacement part number anyone ? :worried_anim:

Cool, nice guide Paul...

Only problem now is to get my hand on the wind...

Wondering if you can actually swap out the network card for an N card?

Anyone know which N cards work and will fit?

Paul, I just saw your site on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW). Great video, great tutorial! Keep it up!

Also, I find it funny and a bit ironic that you're a Windows MVP and a Hackintosh fan :-P. No one's perfect.

Oh, and any progress on the internal microphone?

Cheeky ;)

No progress on the mic yet, tbh I never use mic / headphone sockets (I have a USB Sennheiser headset), so I haven't really spent any time on it yet!

Ok, double post time:

Thought I'd contribute something, although I don't have a Wind just yet. I've attached a background I worked on, a modification of one for the MacBook Air, for our HackBook Wind. There's the 1st draft, the original MBA wall, and the source PSD if anyone wants to try their hand at it. Enjoy!

Yeah, right now I'm considering the Dell 1505, or the GIGA-BYTE GN-WI06N-RH, from what I have read both are compatible with OS X, and I think they show up as a native Airport Extreme Wireless adapter. But I'm going to guess that they are compatible with the MSI Wind. If anyone can confirm that they work that would rock.

Or does anyone know if the Sleep function works on these notebooks and if it does do these cards automatically resume and reconnect to the network when they come up? Lots of questions, hopefully once I get mine I can contribute with some answers.

If intending to open up any laptop I would wait until service manuals are available and even then I would want to be reading a lot of feedback on Google, first. Not to labor the obvious but laptops are fiddly, a lot of parts, a lot of patience needed.

Specifically, which Dell 1505 802.11n mini PIC-E WLAN card works?

I assume they are not all the same...

I checked the dell website and they range from $35 - $80+

Also, would the INTEL Wireless-N mini PCI-E cards work, any have been tested and verified working?

More specifically the Intel PRO/WIRELESS 4965 MINI-PCI-E 802.11A/B/G Draft N Wireless LAN Card

I have a quick question: I know that we've already established that it is fairly easy to set up the Wind without the need for a disk image, but if I wanted to make a restore image, how would I go about doing that without having to make an image of the entire drive? I've used dd on Linux in the past to make a disk image, but I don't want an 80GB image if OS X is only taking 4-6GB.

Personally, I think it would be handy to have a disk image if I screwed something up and didn't feel like going through the entire install process again.

Could someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

BTW, a big thank you is in order to paulobrien and meteparozzi. You guys have done a great job in making it easy for people like me to put OS X on this machine. I'm really excited to be getting mine, and I can't wait to show it off to my mates!
