OS X on the MSI Wind, Before it's Released

Numberzz

A hacker, and a member of our forums, has managed to get Mac OS X Leopard running on the MSI Wind. This is what jav had to say about getting it on his MSI Wind. It's translated from spanish.

Well, here it is. The new MSI Wind running Kalyway 10.5.2. I still have to make some adjustments, such as the resolution and the wireless card, but I couldn't stop myself from posting these images that I'm sure will get the interest from more than one person. Ethernet and Bluetooth work right out of the box, so I'm really expecting a lot from this small notebook.

All that and the MSI Wind isn't even going to be released until July 7th.

EDIT: It appears that the sound also works OTB. The resolution and wireless are the only things that we know of that don't work.

Just got my new MSI Wind (Advent) - I got the last one in PCWorld :D

Only one problem so far, the laptop really doesn't like my wifi; it keeps cutting out for no reason - VERY irritating

O,h and one final thing, I can't seem to find any "warranty void if removed" stickers on it... a bit odd

check out this thread: http://forums.msiwind.net/general-discussi...-here-t764.html

you may need to update your drivers

Everyone talks about installing the dell 1490 for wifi. How is it done? Also would a usb wifi dongle work?

dont do the dongle, you will regret it. get dell 1490

Hey there, this is potentially not the best place to ask, but I've gone down the Dell 1490 route and it's working a treat in OS X. Only problem is that I'm dual-booting cannot for the life of me get the drivers for XP to work! Bit annoying since i've now gone from a machine that was wifi-only in XP to one that wifi-only in OS X.

Anyone else dual booting and able to get the 1490 working under XP?

So could someone confirm that, with the Dell 1490, no modifications to the Wind are necessary?

EDIT: Also, are there 8187SE drivers for Vista? A friend has a Dell notebook with the 1490, and I'm going to see if he'll let me swap cards with him. Of course, I'll need Vista drivers so he can use my wireless card.

I've tried following the steps below very closely on my Advent with the Dell wifi card and 2gb RAM.

I've tried three times now and keep getting Kernel Panics. Only thing I've done differently is to use a disc with 10.5.4 update on, rather than Software Update after 10.5.3. I'm going to try that now however. Is there any change so far to what was posted below or does anyone have any advice on what to try differently to get around these KPs?

EDIT: Yep, you have to use Software Update, not a standalone installer of 10.5.4

Not to rain on the parade but there really isn't that much extra to justify making a new 3+ GB disk and try to seed it with only 1 or 2 people.

Step by step:

Install Kalyway with these options (and only these options) checked:

Additional Fonts (if you want them)

kernel_vanilla_92

GMA950

macam_iusbcam

kext helper b7

Lastnetkassmbios

Powermanagment_Bundle

RealtekR1000

Make sure your ethernet cable is plugged in with a valid network connection (not PPPoE)

Download the Kalyway 10.5.3 ComboUpdate. Install it. Install vanilla kernel. Reboot and type 'update -v'. Run software update. Install everything (as of today). Reboot and type 'update -v'.

Upon reboot, install the attached kext files using kext helper b7. Install the two packages. Reboot after each installation. Repair disk permissions.

Celebrate. You now have a working 10.5.4 netbook.

If you have a wifi card known to work, crack the puppy open and add it in. If you have problems with the resolution randomly changing, download DisplayConfigX and set up a 1024 x 600 x 60hz monitor and save it.

TaDa! :)

Everything will be working at this point (if you installed a new wifi card) except for the microphone / input / output. Hope that helps. You can find the Kalyway distros on either the Blue / Yellow Mixed Together Demon or the Enclosed Oceanic Water Body of Pirates. I think I found mine on the first. B)

Just to set aside the talk of slowness and Tiger and all that. It really does run fast. I had a movie playing with some tunes, a few Safari tabs and a text edit document open with no problems. Try it before you knock it on speed, those Geekbench results don't do it much justice.

Just a little extra info for you all and a question.

I got my advent yesterday and started playing with OSX on it.

I followed the instructions and got it up and running nicely (dual boot with XP actually), but couldn't find a way of getting trackpad scrolling to work. Ideally single finger at side of trackpad, but I'll take the 2 finger route if its optimally configured. I know it can work as I almost had it before doom struck.

Anyone have the instructions? Tried a few things and managed to completely kill the keyboard, mouse etc and had to recover from the DVD.

And for the info for you lot - If you've an advent and don't want to worry about triggering XP reactivation (if you've dual booted like me), but want a faster OSX experience, update the bios using advents bios upgrade. They have released 1.5 officially.

Cheers

I don't think there's VIA CPU support yet.. and I don't think anyone would develop one either.

Hi all!

Thank to your help, I finally got Leopard 10.5.4 installed on my Msi Wind - It's wonderful, no problems, quick (I also installed another gb of ram)..

I only wanted to thank you and to tell that I also got worked my usb wifi dongle ( d-link DWL-G122). It was easy and so I don't need anymore to order a dell 1390 and to open the pc..

Remember.. THE USB WIFI DONGLE D-LINK DWL-G122 WORKS ON MSI WIND

Bye bye!!

Daniela

All the new ones being shipped will already have the firmware update installed.

I can confirm that my Advent did not have the firmware update installed - it was one version point below the latest (as with the BIOS).

Has anyone updated the camera firmware and tested it in Leopard? Any differences? I'm hoping the firmware update will correct the erratic camera behavior that has been previously observed.

Also, as I previously asked, could someone confirm that no Wind modifications are necessary for the Dell 1490?

I don't know for sure about the 1490 but I can say that with the 1390 I had, no hardware mod was needed. I isolated the standoff with a piece of duct tape and then secured the board with a screw at the far end into the standoff there. The board sits a bit higher than the original but there is still plenty of clearance to the case bottom when refitted.

BTW One issue I have with the WLAN is it doesn't automatically rejoin the network after sleep. I have to manually select it from the airport dropdown on the toolbar. No big deal but I wondered why it happened.

Hi OSXOW

Great to hear it's working for you, I'm also dual booting. I located a cool app to do exactly what you're describing; it's called 'SideTrack', but unfortunately no joy yet - as it keeps telling me that the drivers aren't installed, even when I've installed them. I'd be interested to know if that's a problem with my config or if you get it to work:

http://sidetrack.en.softonic.com/mac

Also, did you get a wifi card that worked both in OS X and XP? I'm dual booting, but I can't get the Dell 1490 drivers to install correctly in XP and it's driving me mad. Have heard that the Dell 1500 is working with no probs, but don't want to bin my brand new 1490 unless I absolutely have to.

best

Carlos

Also the Dell 1500, I think I want to step up to Wireless N

Ouch! Just checked on ebay, about 5 times the price! :P

OK EVERYONE DON'T REMOVE WINDOWS YET!!!

there's a firmware update that requires windows!!!!

it's for the Cammera!!!

I can confirm that I've installed the firmware update for the camera, and PhotoBooth is no longer crashing for me on OS X. Skype also shows the video feed, although I haven't tried making a video call.

You could install the update using a flash disk version of XP, such as BartPE or similar, so don't worry about re-installing windows to your machine. (see here)
