Hopefully this is the right place to ask the question...

I installed using the Kalyway 10.5.1 version of the DVD and after a few false starts, I have everything that I need working pretty well.

Now that I have a little better understanding of the Mac, I'm going to do a fresh install. I see that there is a new Kalyway release and I'll grab it but I was wondering about some of the other releases that are out there (Leo4All for example)..

Can anyone give a run down on these different releases and why one os better than the other or what one offers that the other does not? Obviously, one of the answers I'm expecting to hear is that you should use whatever one works for you.... but I am curious.

Thanks!

It really depends on your hardware, as different releases seem to support some things better than others.

You only have to read over the threads of the various releases to see what people think of them. Compare the "it works great!" posts to the "it doesn't work at all" posts to get an idea as to how your specific hardware may fare.

To be honest... if your hardware is as compatible as possible you really should consider one of the vanilla install methods and only install the needed drivers.

I started out with kalyways great 10.5.1 distribution, but then ordered the original leopard cd and installed onto a second harddisk with one of the vanilla how to's in this forum. Runs like a charm and i don't have to take care about where to find a certain language pack or printer drivers and stuff like that. I don't even have to download Xcode (if you would like to use that) and i'm as legal as i can be with Mac OSX on a normal personal computer.

To be honest... if your hardware is as compatible as possible ...

That's a mighty big "if". My older P4 doesn't have support for NX and therefore I can forget about running any vanilla kernels. In fact, a lot of the discussion on this board is precisely because so many people have hardware that is not compatible with offically supported-by-Apple kernels and device drivers.

What the OP is looking for would be outstanding. Some sort of matrix chart or spreadsheet that lists the different releases across the top with various "features" down the side, and X's in the chart cells that indicate if that feature will work on the release. It would be a big job and, unfortunately, almost nobody is making any money on this stuff so it's not worth anybody's time to make such a thing. There are too many variables. It would take a month of full-time work to do it and it would be almost a full-time job to keep it up to date.

Nice to have but not gonna happen.

maybe I ought to rephrase the question..

Is there a comparison chart somewhere of what the different versions offer that would allow is to figure out which to use? I suppose that I could just download all the different versions and try them but that's rather a pain...

Well I am not sure if this will help you our not, but it depends on what you want to do with your system, and how comfortable you are with things like using the terminal and editing ktext files.

If you are looking for the easy route I suggest the Kalyway version, and the newest 10.5.2 is pretty robust and has tons of diver support for various configurations

Leo4all is also easy for the same reason (although I did find the install process to take longer and the resulting install seemed less snappy, numbers did not really bear this out however) I think Leo4All might be a better choice for AMD and non intel installs but that is just the vibe I get from reading the forums.

Now if you are tech savvy and have some time getting the retail disc and creating your own install is cool, you know exactly what went on so you can trouble shoot things easier, however there will be a certain amount of trial and error in this way and it is time intensive spent about a week to make mine work (kind of...) I learned a lot this way which is the main reason I tried it. There are also some patches around that will alter the retail disk to work as well.

I have tried all three methods and I will say this. Created my own 10.5.2 install but I never got my wireless card to work and only had a few screen resolutions which was annoying and fixable. however both problems were fixed when I used kalyway and Leo4all.

With all the different PC configurations it is just going trial and error I think for the most part.

hope this helps perhaps folks who have tried more than one install could also chime in

I did a complete installation with iATKOSv1.0i R3 with the vanilla kernel, but that took me hours and hours to get it working, plus the boot time was enormous (possibly because of the Yukon2 NIC (see: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=92571).

Kalyway has a lot of these odd GUI customizations () and feels a bit bloated for that matter. How is this with Leo4all?

hey ! no GUI customizations at all in my last 10.5.2 !!

My specs.

shuttle SG31

C2D 6550 2.33

realtek 888

Marvel network controller

xfx 7800 gt.

All that works great on kalyway 10.5.2 and leo4all.

Kaly wont restart with vanilla kernel, Leo4 works great with vanilla, but cannot install the darwin bootloader. Must boot with DVD

So, I'm sure my hardware works, can someone please point me to a guide where i can create my own dvd?

  • 1 month later...

Guys, about this topic.

I'm kinda little dissapointed about any of these.

Well, I have Core2Duo on MSI x975 Power Up Edition (jMicron controller), Azalia audio, Intel 1000 pro blah blah LAN, 8800GT video if that matters.

The only thing that was nicely working for me is 10.4.10 osx88hu_installdvd-test5. Flawless installation, everything is working.

And no any luck with ANY of Leopard packs. I've tried about 10 of them, Leo4all many versions, Kaliway, iAtkos, say what else.

Sometimes its hangs up during installation, sometimes PS/2 keyboard is not working, HFC+ error, waiting for root -- tons of different errors.

For example, latest Leo4All v3 Final:

Refuses to load from SATA DVD, tried from IDE one and I've got this:

installation on IDE-drive just hangs up when it says "2 minutes remaining". Tried about 3 times with different kernels/drivers, same {censored}.

Checking DVD in the beginning was completely fine.

I believe that its all about JMicron and/or PS/2 keyboard... But still, why Tiger was fine and Leo is not?

Please, suggest me what to do, I want Leo badly )
