setec
UPDATED MODIFICATIONS for 10.4.4 start with Post #21 POST #21 I followed the directions on osxonpc.com, however, I only got the blinking cursor on the black screen. So, I looked for a google cached copy of "Install On a Partition Simple And Accurate" and found them. I used Partition Magic to great a chunk of empty space on my laptop as a secondary partition. My 1st Partition is WinXP. I think used WinXP's diskpart command I created an Apple partition: create partition primary size=6660 id=af The key to my failure using osxonpc.com's directions was that I was not making an "AF" or Apple Filesystem partition. I also made the size 6660 since anything bigger isn't used anyway. The other important deviation from osxonpc.com's directions was a change of their dd command: dd if=tiger-x86-flat.img of=\\?\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2 bs=512 skip=63 --progress The progress is nice because you know its doing something and you can know when your reaching the end: 6,441,878,016 Your records in and out should be 12581793+0 Now, since I was still in XP, I used diskpart again to make the Partition2 Active. I didn't want to bother trying to figure out a dual boot system or Boot loader if it wasn't going to run anyway. So, after it was active, I rebooted. OS X loaded just great. Gateway 450XL Laptop Pentium M 1.6Ghz 1GB RAM 64MB ATI Radeon 9000 Video Card Since I have a Pentium M, I only have SSE2, not SSE3. I went back to the directions on osxpc.com and downloaded Maxxuss-SSE3to2-Allinclusive-v0. I also searched for different directions then the ones that came with those files since they didn't seem to work for me initially. I was able to install this from within Mac OS X, using the command terminal. I then rebooted, and now SSE3 programs like iTunes work. I also downloaded the x86 version of Firefox (Deerpark 2) from: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/josh/archiv...stable_x86.html Anyway, the system is pretty stable. iTunes is only version 4.8, so I am going to try to download the 4.9 version to see if it works. Thanks to everyone who had directions on their websites!! Also, OS X automatically mounted my WinXP partition, so I had access to My Documents and music. However, it is read-only, which is probably a good thing, Note: In order for me to set the XP Partition active again, I can use a win98se bootdisk from bootdisk.com and use fdisk from that. My next part of the project is figuring out a bootloader/menu so that I can dual boot. setec
iTunes 4.9 updated no problem. Office 2004 works fine. (I had to creat some more free space in WinXP type AF, then format that parition once in Mac OSX so I had some more free space. Originally installed to run 1024x768 by default I have an ATI Radeon 9000 64MB on a gateway 450XL laptop. I could only get it to 1280x1024 because everything above that was a garbled screen. I deleted ATIRadeon8500.kext in \System\Library\Extensions and set 1400x1050x32 in my com.apple.Boot.plist by adding <Key>Graphics Mode</Key> <String>1400x1050x32</String> In order be able to save the file, I had to this from terminal: sudo vi com.apple.Boot.plist rebooted bam - crisp 1400x1050 resolution. Got 1400x1050 running no problem by adding this into Now, if I could on get my AC97 not to crackle (yes, I tried the fix on this forum) and get my internal Broadcom 54 wifi card to be recognized, it would even sweeter. setec
UPDATE I completely wiped the install out to try again. Installed as above with the 6GB partition, made a spare partition as well. Used the Chain0 in C:\ for a boot option, that works. This time I used v0.4 of Maxxuss-SSE3to2 and this installed great! I realized that v0.2 had corrupted my AC97 sound, so no more problems with that. Then the biggy - the speed issue: Followed the directions to get rid of the TPM Module that was pegging my system resources at an average of 95% all the time: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/SpeedBoost Rebooted - Holy cow, this is blazingly fast now. johnnybluejeans
AC97 Sound card with my 450XL. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I mean specifically. My Gateway has an AC97 audio card as well, but the audio does not work for me. Mine is a Conexant CX20486. Did you have to do anything to get the audio working? johnnybluejeans
do you get absolutely no sound or do you get garbled or "chipmunk sound" ? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No I get absolutely no sound. Every once in a while I hear a "pop" from my speaker. The other strange thing is that if I plug a Mic in and go to the audio input tab in sound settings, it appears as if the Mic is working. It certainly registers the sound levels as I speak into the Mic... setec
Hmm, as far as the mic, I wonder if you could test recording a file, then copy that file to a keydisk to play on another machine to see if it did record your sound. as far as sound input - when you go to \Applications\Utilities\Audio Midi Setup Is AC97 Audio (PCM) listed as the default input? I am trying to narrow down whether its listed and not working versus unlisted (i.e. not installed) Your Gateway M250X is supposed to have * Conexant CX20486 * AC'97 Revision 2.3 Rev. 1.0-compliant * Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) * Environmental Audio Extension (EAX) * Software EQ * Multi-stream Direct Sound and Direct Sound 3D acceleration My Gateway 450XL (ROG) is supposed to have # Soft Audio Sigmatel AC97 codec # PCI interface audio # Multi-stream Direct Sound and Direct Sound 3D acceleration # SoundBlaster Pro, MIDI, Windows Sound System compatible, MP3, WMA # S/PDIF output for PCM or AC–3 content via Toslink jack on port replicator # PCI Power Management Interface (PPMI) 1.1 compliant Does your M250 have the Pentium M or Pentium Celeron? Do you have Maxxuss SSE3to2 installed? I know I had version 0.2 installed and that garbled my sound. Now I have 0.4 installed and works great. Since my laptop is not the M series, it looks like we have different sound cards but with a similiar codec. Another option, although time consuming, would be to wipe it and just reinstall it again . I am assuming the sound did not work from the get go? johnnybluejeans
In Audio MIDI Setup I have: Default Input: AC97 Audio (PCM) Default Output: AC97 Audio (PCM) System Output: AC97 Audio (PCM) I am on a Pentium M 2Ghz with the Maxxuss 0.41 patch. I downloaded a program called Audacity (simple sound editing program). I recorded myself talking, exported it to a wav and sent it over to my Windows computer. The recording worked just fine! Seems I have audio input and no audio output! Also, under System Profiler in the Extensions category I have this error in AppleAC97AudioIntelICH: Dependencies: Incomplete Dependency Errors: com.apple.driver.AppleAC97Audio: No valid version of this dependency can be found Audio has never worked. This is my second native install. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/970-success-with-gateway-450xl-laptop/#findComment-6674 Share on other sites
setec
I know this may seem like a dumb question - but is your volume turned up? Also, if you go into Audio Midi Setup, your default Audio Output format may be "44100.0 Hz" - change that to "48000.0 Hz" Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/970-success-with-gateway-450xl-laptop/#findComment-6959 Share on other sites

johnnybluejeans
Hello johnnybluejeans, I also have a Gateway M250X. No audio for me either but I wondered if you could get your built in ethernet working? Audio is weird, everything works but the output! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No, our ethernet cards are not supported. ; ( For networking I originally used firewire and a bridged network connection (you need a separate windows XP machine for this solution). I can give you more detailed instructions if you are interested. I have since bought a belkin usb wireless adapter. There is a thread on the forums about this as well. Gives you wireless, but you have to run an open network (no WEP or WPA as of yet). setec
Johnnybluejeans - Your built in ethernet is not working? Mine is working on my 450XL. Intel® PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter Sorry that I couldn't figure out your sound issue. Its weird that it seems to be installed, yet not working. I wonder what would happen if you stuck in headphones. I just wanted to post that the Toshiba DVD-ROM, CDRW that came with my 450XL burned a cdrom successfully today with disk utility. I was burning an ISO file. I haven't tried through iTunes yet and I haven't tried playing a DVD, but I would assume those would work. setec
Got the built in wireless to work using the WONDERFUL directions found in this thread: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=1263&st=0 This is for my broadcom chipset build in mini-PCI wireless card. Works great!!! Interesting Note: If you have konfabulator installed, NONE of the wifi widgets detect the signal strength of the network. 2 of them detect the SSID but all have 0% signal strength. Does anyone know what these widgets try to read from Airport? One of the widgets told me now airport wifi network was installed, even though I have the hacked version running. johnnybluejeans
Setec: Yeah, built in ethernet isn't working for me. My M250 uses the Broadcom 5751 (unsupported last I checked). I'm using wireless now anyway with a Belkin USB Adapter. As for headphones, it was a no go. I even tried headphones in the mic jack. I think I've tried every combination of variables I could think of. Still no sound. ; ( Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/970-success-with-gateway-450xl-laptop/#findComment-9280 Share on other sites
setec
Just another update: I used the DVD install method from this thread: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=1356 I have half my harddrive set for XP, and I used Partion Magic to create another partition, roughly 33GB. Boot with the DVD install. Before installing, use the above menus to launch Disk Utility and ERASE the blank 33GB partition. Do the install. Reboot. Now, when it first boots up, I get an HFS+ Error. This is because my partition 2 was set to active. I used the Ultimate Boot CD, booted that up, used a fdisk tool to set partition 1 back to active. Rebooted. Now my dual boot XP/x86 menu came up and I chose x86. It will ask you for your apple ID, you can put that in if you want. The next page is the Registration, hit ALT-Q and then hit SKIP. Next step is for you to pick your login id and password. Once in your in, go to /System/Library/Extentions and delete AppleTPMACPI.kext as mentioned earlier in my thread. However, the DVD Copy did not include the AppleAC97Audio.kext file. So sound won't work. Directions taken from deep in the above thread: Once you've copied that, you have to set the correct permissions, otherwise you'll get the "not properly installed" error. What I did (after browsing through the forums to find a semi-answer) was this: Slap in the Darwin 8.01 cdrom Go to terminal $ cd /System/Library/Extensions $ sudo cp -R /Volumes/Darwin8_i386/System/Library/Extensions/AppleAC97Audio.kext . $ sudo chmod -R 755 AppleAC97Audio.kext $ sudo chown -R root:wheel AppleAC97Audio.kext This set the correct ownership and privileges, after which I was able to: sudo kextload AppleAC97Audio.kext sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleAC97Audio.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleAC97AudioVIA.kext Reboot Now my sound works. I just then redid my steps from above for the 1400x1050 graphics and getting the wireless working. Works so much better now and I have a 33GB partition for it!!! setec
POST #21 System: Gateway 450XL laptop with Windows XP Pro on the first partition and OSX on the 2nd. 1 GB of RAM and a 64 MB ATI Radeon 9000 video card. Initially tried installing 10.4.4 fresh in the spare partition, however, it wouldn't load the IONetworkingFamily.kext file properly, thus, no internal ethernet. I know there are several posts with fixes, however, I couldn't get them to work. So, I installed 10.4.3 and that worked with built-in ethernet. Before installing 10.4.4, I backed up my Extensions folder so that I would have a 10.4.3 copy of IONetworkingFamily.kext, as well as all my other kext files, just in case. I then installed 10.4.4 using the upgrade option with a DVD install. (MacOSX_10.4.4DVD) Now, I got the error again for IONetworkingFamily.kext. I backed up my 10.4.4 copy, then deleted it from the Extensions folder. Then I used terminal and sudo cp -R IONetworkingFamily.kext from the directory I had it in to /System/Library/Extensions I repaired permissions with Disk Utility and then rebooted. Now my ethernet works and I have 10.4.4. The sound worked correctly in 10.4.3 and 10.4.4. Now to modify the resolution to 1400x1050 using my earlier 10.4.1 directions above. And then my goal will be to get the wireless working again. After that, maybe I will try the 10.4.5 patching. UPDATE 04/02/06 - If you don't have a 10.4.3 system, but you have the 10.4.3 Intel DVD, then use this method to get the above kext and any other kext you want. Credits to thrunner Use Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ with install DVD to extract."Open Mac OS X Installation Packages" and extract the kexts you need. setec
Thanks for Crusher4 for his solution which got my Wireless working. I have 10.4.4 now with wireless. I have a nx850xl and i cant get the ps2 kexts to work for me. My laptop keyboard and touchad worked right away. I didn't have to do anything special to get it working. I am running a Gateway M520 Laptop, and get the same errors as austinf - The audio just won't work for output. I installed natively using the patched DVD. When I access the MIDI configuration application, it is set to 48000, and won't play sounds out. Anyone know how I can get this working? Here are the specs for your M520 from Gateway.com: AudioSound support * Conexant AMOM (Audio Modem on Motherboard) * Multi-stream Direct Sound and Direct Sound 3D acceleration * SoundBlaster Pro, MIDI, Windows Sound System compatible Note: This notebook does not have an internal microphone. So, your definetly using a different video card then me. So, this limits me on how I can help. Have you tried searching this forum for other Conexant sound card users?
