legendariske_harehjort
Can I run a Q6600 @ 3GHz with stock fan? According to Toms hardware it will only use a little more power at 3GHz Btw, please share your overclock settings (I have never OC'ed before). Thanks, walther Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90235-can-i-run-a-q6600-3ghz-with-stock-fan/ Share on other sites
scottath
I run my quad with less than default voltage at 3.2ghz [with a Thermalright 120 extreme though] To run mine at 3.2ghz: 1.068volts vcore FSB 400 Multiplyer=8 RAM at 1:1 [DDR2 800 [or 6400]] M/B GA-P35-DS4 [rev 2.0] So yes, you can run it at even 3.2 without getting a better cooler, just set the voltage to the default [should be 1.3???], raise the FSB up and watch temps with "Coretemp" Once you get to the 3.2 or what ever, run Prime 95 on small FTT's setting for up to 8 hrs [before you start it - in the Advanced menu - set "Round off checking" on] Monitor coretemp - make sure it dosent go above 70C. If it does lower voltage till it gets as low as possible without having prime fail. aspirina750
If its´s a G0 and you have great airflow it should be possible, but not recommended. I would go for a Ninja or Thermal, if you want a cheap option the Artic Cooling Freeze 7 Pro is the best money-performance one. vbetts
I don't reccomend overclocking on a stock fan like that. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90235-can-i-run-a-q6600-3ghz-with-stock-fan/#findComment-644603 Share on other sites
legendariske_harehjort
Thank you all for the replies, I think I will go for the Arctic thingy,... Then I will start looking for stable 3GHz settings. cheers, walther Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90235-can-i-run-a-q6600-3ghz-with-stock-fan/#findComment-645404 Share on other sites
neocui
Depends on how lucky you get... My G0 stepping wasn't that great. I had to pump the voltage to 1.425 to get it stable. So good luck! legendariske_harehjort
Does this look sound? http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/11/08/dua...uad/page15.html and is the settings in the table, in the bottom of the screen all I need to change in the BIOS? (or do I need to quicksteppe, or some other "of course" setting that OC'ers know about) Cheers, walther Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90235-can-i-run-a-q6600-3ghz-with-stock-fan/#findComment-645525 Share on other sites
spanakorizo
thermalright 120 would be a little difficult to install it in mobo/cpu but it's gr8 cooler and cheap i hope mine was G0 stepping ,now (as a B3) ,its oc to 3.0 with this cooler and with temps around 40 idle /60,65 max 65 max with prime95 that really burns the cpu ,with apps for example 3dstudio the temps are around 55-60 at full use (rendering) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90235-can-i-run-a-q6600-3ghz-with-stock-fan/#findComment-645555 Share on other sites
scottath
make sure your ram can take it, and you could probably get away with using less volts than that table [should be fine for that small a clock if it is 800 speed] Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90235-can-i-run-a-q6600-3ghz-with-stock-fan/#findComment-645673 Share on other sites
