we got restore discs when we bought our G4s some time ago...with OS 9.2 on it, those discs could be used as installation discs too...later we bought 10.3 boxed, wich was an actual installation disc...

 

i guess the only difference is that a restore disc comes with your new mac and the installation disc can be purchased without a computer...

well, it does say that.... surely an oversight? the version on that cd (at least, the one I downloaded) is 10.4.4 8G1165.

 

Interestingly, the EULA for installing the OS says:

so it looks like they just forgot to update the ones in the other packages. no biggie, if you buy an iMac its already installed so you wouldn't notice anyway.

The restore disk (2 Layer) boots on a Mac Mini, but will not install. Kernel panic, no driver for a PowerMac10.1.

 

I'm pretty well convinced the bootloader is an EFI reliant Intel specific boot. The contents of the DVD can be browsed and run under my current OS X. However, the installer for bundled software will test my environment and tell me it isn't meant for my machine.
