natewhite
Kalyway up and running on DS3L E8400 OC'd to 3.6. MSI 8800GT OC, (only shows 256MB in system) 4gb RAM 200GB IDE HD and 500GB SATA. Had some trouble on the 1st attempt got stuck in GUID instead of MBR. But its fixed now. Now I need some help with my dual boot. I had CD/DVD 1st then Leopard IDE HD, then nothing. Do I need to change some orders to make it so I can choose between XP Pro and Leopard? I only have 1 option when I get to the darwin boot loader but it counts down like it should. Is that because I don't even have my XP Sata drive as a choice? Thanks for the guide OP! cubswinfllclssic
edit: following my motherboard settings, using latest bios, using 10.5.2 and gfx update, and using mac.nub's latest smbios.. i was finally able to get my computer to enter sleep perfectly.. now the problem is, i cannot wake... still testing various things. mtotho, first of all, thanks for the great guide. You did a great job researching and collecting all this information. I read through every single post in this forum before installing on my Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L board and I couldn't be more thankful. I elected to use the iAtkos 1.0i DVD instead of Kalyway (mostly because after I downloaded iAtkos, my college blocked torrents and I couldn't download Kalyway), and I thought I'd let you know that the Sleep function works perfectly using iAtkos. It sleeps and wakes fine, and shutdown works, too-- but strangely enough, restart doesn't work (which, from what I've gathered, is sort of the opposite problem as many have experienced with the DS3L?). It likely does not matter, but I will also mention that I am NOT using AHCI because I only own two SATA devices. I'm not sure why-- I'm guessing that the power management kexts are different, and I'll research this (I wasn't sure if your sleep problems were from your ASUS board or your Gigabyte, but I thought I'd mention this anyway just in case it helps). In general, iAtkos runs rock-solid. I didn't need GUID support because my system disk is only 80GB so re-partitioning it would be pointless anyway. I haven't yet updated to 10.5.2 because my 10.5.1 installation is so stable, I don't feel like I need it. I wanted to know if you noticed any increased stability with 10.5.2? Right now, the only "problems" I have relate to bluetooth-- sometimes after Sleep, I can't connect with my phone via bluetooth and I have to "restart" (aka, shutdown and startup again). I also noticed that my PCI USB 2.0 card tends to run more stable than my built-in USB 2.0 after sleep (just with my external Time Machine backup drive). Also, could you please explain what the SMBIOS does? I chose not to install netkas' SMBIOS from the iAtkos installer. Thanks again! mtotho
@cubs, i would update to 10.5.2 using kalyway combo. You seem to have a solid build, but updating the other method would most likely undo alot of ur progress and what not. Smbios is the file that helps detect everything correctly.. such as Ram speed, processor, motherboard model, everything in system profiler. I recently discovered updating my smbios allows me to go into sleep.. but not wake up (before i updated, i could not even go into sleep) i am not entirely sure of the whole realm of processor the smbios deals with.. but i can tell you that it is a main component in detecting hard ware correctly. hfiend
anyone having audio issues? Such as only one channel? noticed it over the weekend. It affects the line out and digital out and a cheep little usb 5.1 audio hub. I reapplied the listed fix. everything appeared fine (tho I'll test again methodically) until just now and it's back to one channel. Wondering if anyone else has seen this? any thoughts. I'll report back when I have a moment. thx oh... Using a DS3L board. [uPDATE] It was RealPlayer. Sorry. Noticed that when I boot up with a usb drive connected the system freezes. Had a look around and didn't find a culprit. Any ideas? I'm forgetful and often leave these drives connected... cubswinfllclssic
@mtotho, Thanks. I will try updating smbios. A couple more questions for you guys-- My boot seems to stall on IOkitwaitquiet for about 45 seconds. A couple (brief) posts in other forums have suggested that changing SATA mode from Native to Legacy IDE might eliminate this problem, but one post said that he couldn't boot anything but safemode afterwards. I remember your guide said to use Native IDE for SATA, so I thought I'd ask-- why does it need to be Native IDE instead of Legacy? A second issue: I am trying to install iLife from the 10.4.11 discs that came with a new iMac, and I noticed that only one of them is readable by my SATA DVD drive. I know it's not the discs; they're brand new. It also seems to sporadically not read anything (especially after sleep). Any ideas? (I'll let you know if smbios update helps this...) ottoman1384
thanks so much for the tutorial!!! i was afraid it wouldnt work but it worked flawlessly. the only problem i'm having is that my processor is show up at 1.6ghz core duo instead of 2.2ghz. it also feels slow compared to my 2ghz macbook. oh yea and i have a ga-p35-ds3l motherboard. just to let you know, i bought this processor off of ebay so im thinking i got ripped off. the guy that sold it to me is saying that he never had a 1.6ghz processor so he couldn't have mistakingly sent the wrong one. he says to check the bios for any setting that is making it slower. can someone please help. thanks in advance Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/83689-how-to-install-on-gigabyteasuscompatible-boards/page/27/#findComment-672592 Share on other sites
mr.mcgoo
First of all thanks mtotho for creating this guide. Secondly, I've gotten everything to work on my p5w-dh machine surprisingly easy today, using Kalyway 10.5.1 and the normal update method listed in this thread. All I have left to do is the Leopard Gfx update. My only problems were getting the right bios settings figured out for the newest bios and the actual installation. I had to use MBR, 1 word for disk partition, and by not selecting the wifi, audio, gfx drivers during installation. I'm dual booting with Vista and it works great. I just have one question (I apologize for asking a noob question) since this is my first time running this. I know I shall not use software update for OS X updates, but it is safe to update software like iTunes right? Thanks. I'll post my experiences as they happen. cubswinfllclssic
@mcgoo, pretty much everything EXCEPT kernel updates from Apple ARE safe. iTunes updates fine, so do iLife, Safari, etc. Just make sure you don't use Apple updates that change your version number (e.g. from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2) because these often rewrite kext files that we have modified to make our mobos work. Usually the kernel itself isn't the problem, because we are using EFI emulation to be able to run the vanilla kernel. @ottoman, two things to make sure your processor actually is 2.2GHz--First, rub off the thermal grease (don't forget to put more on afterwards) and make sure it says 2.2GHz on the front of the processor. Second, make sure in your bios settings, the FSB is set correctly. The default on the DS3L is automatic, but see what it says. Can you provide more information on the processor type? For example, the model, FSB speed, clock multiplier, etc. It may be that the board doesn't support your FSB (but I doubt it). thepunkerguy
I have a question. I applied the Kext files in this thread that makes the SATA hard drives not Orange colored (removable) anymore. After I did that, the Hard drive icon changed to a normal icon and the eject option went away, but when I open the drive, the background for the folders is still orange. Is this normal? Does OSX still think the drive is a removable drive? - Mike Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/83689-how-to-install-on-gigabyteasuscompatible-boards/page/27/#findComment-673112 Share on other sites
mr.mcgoo
@cubswinfllclssic Thanks for the reply. I figured as much but just wanted to be sure. @thepunkerguy Do you mean when you open a Finder window the background is still orange? You just need to change window background color in the Finder View options from Orange to White. That kext was meant to change the hdd icon, not also change the window background color. If that's not what your problem is maybe someone else can help. dci693
Hey guys, So I applied the big Apple Security Update patch this AM (was 50 mb). I then went to reboot the machine. Naturally, reboot is not working on my Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L (it never has), so I had to hit the reset button. It then took a while to restart, and I saw that it had reset my overclock settings back to stock. This has happened before, so I just redid my OC settings (that's fixed it in the past before). However, I couldn't get the machine to boot up except at stock. I had it OC'd to 2.9 Ghz, so I tried 2.6 Ghz (260 FSB). It still wouldn't boot except at stock. What the heck could be going on? I doubt the application of the security patch could've done this and I think it was just coincidental. Booting up at stock, OSX works just fine. But now my rig is running at 2.0 GHz. That's not what I want! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. EDIT: Did some Googling and found that this is not an uncommon problem. I had to pull the power cord, hit the power button to discharge the capacitors, then remove the CMOS battery for over 30 minutes, start up, redo all my CMOS settings, then do the overclock. So far, it's holding an OC whereas before it would not overclock at all. It was a bit of a pain taking out the battery, so I hope this won't happen too often! OK, that makes sense. The clock multiplier is the way that BIOS "multiplies" the FSB of your processor. Processor speeds are given by taking the FSB x Multiplier; for example, my Core 2 Duo e4600 is clocked at 2.4GHz, with a clock multiplier of 12x. That means that my FSB is set at 200MHz (200MHz x 12 = 2400MHz = 2.4GHz). In order to get full use out of your processor, BIOS uses your chip's maximum multiplier times the recommended FSB. Overclockers can increase the clock speed of a processor by (in some cases, as mine) increasing the FSB. There is more that goes into this than just multiplying-- you need to maintain a 1:1 ratio with your RAM. Anyway, I changed my FSB to 250MHz, so I'm now running at 3.0GHz. Long story short, your processor definitely is a 2.2GHz, and for some reason, your multiplier was just set wrong to begin with. Running your machine at 11 x 200MHz will give you your 2.2GHz clock speed and (hopefully) a stable system. However, you need to make sure that your RAM and processor have the right ratio, so make sure that you set your RAM speed to "AUTO" in BIOS. This should adjust the speed of your RAM to match the processor speed/multiplier combo. Can you post with your RAM specs? BifBologna
Howdy, Just wanted check in to report another successful noob install using this handy guide. My son and I have 10.5.2 running on a DS3L with an Intel E6750, an EVGA 8600GT and 2 gigs of Corsair RAM. We used the MBR instructions for Kalyway 10.5.1 plus the KalywayCombo update. LAN worked out of the box, though we had to install the R1000Kext mentioned in the Sound/Video/LAN fixes section to get bonjour working. Sound is working with the recommended fixes. Video is working using NVinjectinstaller v.33. We had a small problem with startup taking forever after doing the NVInject thing, but we were able to fix that by using kalyway_10.5.2_kernels.mpkg. For the most part everything seems to working okay though we do have a couple small problems. We initially had some issues with shutdown but I appear to have fixed that with a few BIOS changes I found in this post. Restart has been working as well, but it's a no go on the Sleep thing. Selecting sleep, or if it goes to sleep on it's own, seems to just shut the machine down. I'm still reading up on that. The other problem we have, which I haven't seen much info on, is that if the network cable is disconnected, startup seems to freeze right after the gray Apple screen with the spinning doohicky. As long as the cable is in it's fine. Cable out, no go. At least it seems to be a no go. I haven't been patient enough to see if it will ever finish booting or not. If anyone has some suggestions in that regard, we'd be glad to hear them. Thanks mtotho for the great guide. And thanks to everybody that's contributed anything in anyway to the OSx86 Project. I'm running in native IDE mode and everything works fine. Unless you need to use 4GB RAM, you can turn off AHCI and it won't hurt you. You'll need to in order to use more than 2 SATA drives. From what I understand, AHCI enables hot-swapping of SATA drives (ala eSATA), so if you don't need this feature, turn it off. Also, WinXP will boot VERY slow if you have AHCI enabled. Vista has AHCI drivers built-in, but XP does not and needs to re-load them each time at startup. This often takes forever. mr.mcgoo
I can shutdown as long as I "Turn off the radio" in the Realtek wireless software, which disables the wireless connection. It's not ideal, but easy to do. Haven't tried putting it into sleep and waking it while the radio is off. I have put it to sleep before but it won't wake properly. Restart has always worked fine. And speaking of dual-booting with XP, that's what I originally wanted to do. However since AHCI needs to be enabled, I was unable to get it to install because I am unable to load the necessary of the drivers. I don't have a floppy drive. So I have to use Vista. BUT, I could do it if I used a program like nLite to add the drivers in to a new install disc. But since I already have Vista installed it's more trouble than it's worth to go back to XP. EDIT: Vista was making me angry. So I did use nlite to make a custom XP sp2 install disc that had the necessary SATA drivers to boot and install.
