hmm, my only guess is u install them inccorectly. perhaps u installed only 1 of the 2 files for getting rid of orange drives, or permissions didnt repair correctly. Also i dont know how the fix for orange drives and this new kexts play together, so just try one.

so, you didnt have the fix for the orange drives installed when you did the ahci fix??

i am asking because i do have the orange drives fix installed and didnt want to go ahead and install the ahci fix if no one has been able to do both successfully.

also, if i should go ahead and install the ahci fix, i should obviously enable ahci after reboot right?

Your welcome as mtotho says the AHCI is better which is what I use as well so you may want to give it a try and although not entirely positive I am pretty sure that vista has the drivers for AHCI builtin so it should be able to just boot once you make the change with xp you had to go through a convoluted process to get it working if it was installed without them in the first place.

Yeah, Vista has those drivers built in. XP however does not. The best way to add them is to use a program like nLite to make a customer xp install disc for your system with those drivers added in. I did this and it worked great. Unless you like using a floppy disc during the installation...

hi guys,

if i boot my system with 2 x 2gb ram, osx freezes after 30 - 60 min (single or dual chanel, it doesn´t matter)

but when i boot just with 1 x 2 gb ram (I tried both rams), it works and works and works with no errors at all (i tried 2 weeks with no reboot)

any idea how to solve this problem?

my system:

os: kalyway 10.5.2 with combo update

mboard: GA-P35-DS3R

ram: 2 x 2G OCZ PC2 800mhz Ram

cpu: Intel Core2 Duo E8200

grafic: Radeon HD2600Pro

hdd: 500 WD Sata2

I thought that I was pretty close to ettig everything working, but when I installed the combo update my sound stoppe working. I attempted to use the kalyway patch alc888 but no dice. I tried another kext to see if I could get things going. Again, no dice. Should I just say lesson learned and start over??

After you did the update, did you also update the kernel? Some people have had trouble directly after applying the update but before replacing the kernel with the 9.2 kernel. I'd say give that a try, then try re-patching the audio. If not, look at mtotho's method for fixing the audio-- you might be able to drop those two kexts in and get it working again.

I did the update from apple with the terminal commands. I did not know about a kerna update. I a starting to download the torrents for the update (or not do it at all) to keep it working. I did a search and cound only find 2 posts for mtotho. He was referring to P5W, I have p5k. . . . Same?

@ottoman

Agreed, 40 C isn't bad for a closet. Also, I just found out today that if you delete AppleCPUThermo.kext and AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext from /System/Library/Extensions (don't forget to delete Extensions.mkext from /System/Library too), your CPU runs a LOT cooler. I was running at 43/44 C idle and after I deleted these kexts my processor is now at 31 C idle.

What widget/program(s) are you using to monitor your CPU temps? I have a quad core and have been looking for something with reliable readings to show all 4 core temps at the same time. Thanx!

Search for then install the Temperature Monitor program if you have a revision B version of the chip then your temps will be off by about ~15C higher than they actually are if you have the G variety then they should be accurate as that is what the program is calibrated for..

If you did the update from Apple, then the kernel was replaced. You might be out of luck-- it bunked my system-- I would suggest a reinstallation and this time use Kalyway's update followed by a kernel replacement.

does anyone with the ds3l boards, when you connect a ipod or usb stick, or whatever, it wont show up on the desktop, or in itunes, but it will show up in the system profiler? i end up having to restart the computer just for it to show up anymore, when i first had it going, it popped up pretty fast? do i have to format it? do you think there is some kind of bug in 10.5.2 and itunes with the ipod? or maybe i should update itunes

*update* i guess a 7.6.1 update fixed it :P woooot woooot

@mtotho

i know i read somewhere that you have a keyspan front row remot. i just got one two days ago and am using it on my hackintosh.

the only problem i am having is that i cannot startup front row from the remote. i have to start it up using the mouse, which kind of defeats the purpose.

are you able to start up front row from the remote? if so, how?

thanks

Quick question guys. Does anyone know of anything similar to Everest, CPU-Z, or speedfan that we can use for overclocking with our hackintosh? The makers of Temperature Monitor makes Hardware Monitor but that can only read the CPU Frequency. I have been overclocking my Q6600 with my DS3L board and it would be helpful to have such software since I am 100% Hackintosh user now. I got rid of windows and I'm loving it. I got my Q6600 stable at 3.4ghz but the voltage was to high for my liking. So right now i'm stable at 3.2ghz at 400x8. My temps are around 33 idle and 57-58 100%load with cpu test.

All I've found is temperature monitor.

Hey, question about your OC-- did you change your memory multiplier or leave it at 4/Auto? I have the same exact RAM as you do and I'm wondering if I've maxed out my RAM FSB.

My processor only has an 800 FSB but if I bump it up to 3.2 GHz (12 x 266) it seems only to run stable if I bump the memory multiplier down to 3.2 or 3. Any ideas? Also have DS3L board per signature.

Unless you start putting a lot of voltage to the ram I doubt it would go much higher anyways 3.2 for a multiplier gives you ~850mhz for the ram speed the 3 is just under 800mhz its rated speed. Have you tried 9X356, 8x400 ... with a 2x multipler to run the ram at close to/its rated speed 1:1 with the FSB while still giving you the 3.2ghz for the processor speed.

Thanks! I am new to overclocking, so I guess I never considered bumping the CPU multiplier down. I had read that "true" overclockers will push the FSB to the absolute limit while continually lowering the CPU multiplier. What a difference! I tried 9x365 and it's faster than a speeding bullet. RAM is at 730MHz which is close enough to 800 that I don't see a noticeable drop in memory performance. Thanks again dude. I will try 8x400 and post with results.

Anyway, to stay on-topic, has anyone else with a DS3L board overclocked to a point where OS X and Linux will boot and run perfectly stable, but Windows can't handle it? I definitely have... strange, huh? I'm interested to hear theories as to why this happens.

Your welcome your going to want to make sure the C1E and Speedstep are disabled because you are not using the stock mutiplier so they can screw up the overclock I always disable the speedstep anyways as that one messes me up every time but the C1E usually works perfectly keeping the default multiplier as long as you use normal voltage on the CPU.

I have the same board revision 2.0 I used to keep a windows partition just to test my overclock and never ran into that then again I just went for the highest stable I could get in the windows then used that with my Linux install. How are you testing the stability anyways? You may want to try the mprime255 in the link below once you extract the archive you use ./mprime -m in the directory to get the menu then follow the prompts to do just stress testing smallfft to put the max stress on the CPU you use CTRL + C to quit the testing in a terminal then you can exit.

Hey, question about your OC-- did you change your memory multiplier or leave it at 4/Auto? I have the same exact RAM as you do and I'm wondering if I've maxed out my RAM FSB.

I have my FSB set at 400, CPU Multiplier at 8, Memory multiplier set at 2, memory is running at 800, memory timings are on auto, and I have my memory voltage +1, FSB voltage +1, and the other one +1 too. My Q6600 has a high VID of 1.325 so i have my cpu voltage set at something like 1.37ish right now, and its pretty stable. I've just been using CPU Test to test my system and i have let it run for about 45 minutes. I know thats not near as long as most people let it run but its stable enough for me. I don't have very good patience.

ALSO, have any of you noticed if your Photo Booth is working still? Ever since i upgraded to 10.5.2, Photo Booth doesn't work for me. My cam works with the Macam program, it works with iChat, but not with Photo Booth. It's weird and annoying, because Photo Booth is a cool program. If anyone has any insight to this problem, I'm all ears

So i wrote a few days ago about thinking my PATA/IDE drives were causing my kernel panics, but this does not appear to be the case!

TIME MACHINE IS CRASHING MY PUTER! :D

I've disabled display sleep so once the machine tanks I can still see what's going on- and the Time Machine logo is ALWAYS spinning when it happens (or rather, the scree is frozen but depicts that time machine was spinning...). It also seems to happen very early in the morning (~5am). At this time my backup drive must spin up and start writing, and for some reason the machine freaks out. I was using a PATA/IDE drive as time machine but I switched to a SATA/USB drive and the problem didn't go away. I'm 99.9% sure at this point that, some how, Time Machine is killing my hacky :( Time Machine runs every hour though no problem. It seems fairly random when it will crash as a result instead of succeeding...

Any ideas or suggestions from anyone how this could possibly make any sense? My macbook's never had a problem (of course not..)

I'm not sure about one detail regarding partitioning / formatting OS X partition. Essentially I want to know if it's necessary to format whole drive prior to installing.

Here's the deal:

I have 2 320GB SATA drives - I have Win XP installed on first one, and on second one I have JaS 10.4.8. Second drive is partitioned like this: 1st partition - 30GB for OS X (HFS+) / 2nd partition - 10GB for PS scratch disk (NTFS) / 3rd partition - ~250GB for data (NTFS).

Now, I would like to install Leo over 10.4.8 partition - can I just format that partition via Disk Utility either as MBR or GUID, without touching other two partitions (or without fear of loosing data on 250GB partition for that matter - although I will back it up nevertheless), or is it necessary to format whole 320GB disk? In several posts in this thread I read something about formatting whole drive, but I'm not sure if it's a must.

Thanks

If you are OK with the type of partitioning on that drive (MBR) you can just erase the Jas 10.4.8 partition instead of formatting the whole drive. It already is formatted to HFS+ for your Jas install. If you have to use GUID instead of MBR you will have to format the whole drive though since Jas used MBR partitioning as I recall.

Thanks for your reply. So, as far as I understand, the only disadvantage of MBR formatting is inability to resize / delete partitions? (I actually don't need that option)

I have new 500GB drive, so i can temporarily move 250GB of data to that HDD and format whole drive with GUID, but if there aren't other benefits besides resizing / deleting partitions I'd skip that part.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've read AND experienced:

  • If you delete AppleCPUThermo.kext then TempMonitor stops working.
  • AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext was already removed from Extensions folder and is in my Backup folder. I believe this happens automagically during the update from 10.5 to 10.5.1.
  • Extensions.mkext gets created everytime you boot up.

I have a QuadCore Q6600 with Step G0 + I still have AppleCPUTHermo.kext and Extensions.mkext and TempMonitor is not even close to reading my CPU temps. It shows that idle my temps are 42-42 C. Because in my BIOS at idle, I am reading 29 C.

Anyone else relate to this?

I removed both the IntelCPU and AppleThermal.kext you may want to see if this last one is removed on your system as well, my G0 reads correctly with these gone otherwise I get the 10C+ higher temps.

@MacUser, here's a baffler:

After lowering the CPU Multiplier to 9, bumping the FSB to 345 for a total of 3.10GHz (that's currently the highest it will run 100% stable in Windows), everything runs faster, smoother, etc.-- EXCEPT now when I enter sleep mode in Leopard, I can't wake my computer up without it freaking out and resetting my CMOS. Nothing crashes the system EXCEPT waking from sleep mode in Leopard.

I ran some tests, and sleep works 100% for me when I'm using my old setup (12x259 FSB). However, if I bump up the FSB and decrease the multiplier, sleep crashes. Weird, huh?

I was wondering if you had any ideas.

Also, MacUser, I would love to chat with you about overclocking. I'm very curious-- I noticed that anytime I bump up ANY of the voltages on my DS3L board, it won't POST. I tried each value individually (DDR2, FSB, PCIE) at +.1, didn't post. Together +.1 each, no post. Tried bumping my CPU voltage up one increment (From 1.325 to 1.31something), didn't post. Am I doing this wrong? Is there something else I'm missing? I did a crapton of research and I can't figure out why I can't add any voltage to my board...

If you have any suggestions, given that you also have a DS3L board, I'd love to hear. Either that, or if you can point me to a good overclocking forum, I'd love that, too.

Thanks in advance!
