Hagar
If it works fine with ToH use ToH.. if you're desperate to run vanilla, then keep trying different things until it boots: BIOS Settings, kexts etc.. you are so close that really only you can find out what is wrong. I'm not that desperate but if my system can work with vanilla kernel when I do a system update like 10.5.1 or the next 10.5.2 I don't have to put again toh kernel to make my system boot again
agent-squirrel
Vanilla kernel will only boot with vanilla DSMOS.kext unfortunately it wont even boot with that on my rig so its rather hit and miss. Just bung in the vanilla dsmos.kext. Name the vanilla kernel mach_kernel.vanilla in the root of your drive and reboot, but press f8 as if you were going to boot with the -x -f -v switch. Type mach_kernel.vanilla if it boots, fine then rename your ToH kernel to mach_kernel.hacked and rename your vanilla kernel to mach_kernel and use it from then on. But if not then just use your ToH kernel.
lord_muad_dib
like agent-squirrel said, make sure you have dsmos.kext, and maybe a patched version of appleacpiplatform(?) update to the most recent pcefi version try to boot with cpus=

agent-squirrel
Well you see there is your problem. You say your using a patched dsmos.kext. Vanilla kernel will NOT boot with a patched dsmos. Use the Vanilla One. And Cpus=1 disables one of the cores on a core 2 duo.
krijonk
Dude, @agent-squirrel: dsmos is a NON-apple kext, made by people booting osx on vanilla pc's, i.e. osx86. There is no such thing as a "patched or not patched" dsmos. That is not the issue as long as he has it. (google what it is for more info, you sound confused) - - THIS IS A BUG IN THE BIOS OF THE MOBO. - - You will never succeed in booting the vanilla kernel on the PVLD2 mobo. I tried for many days to no avail. Same exact problem as you, instant reboot. I am convinced it has something to do with HPET and that mobo claimed "support", and since it is the older 945 chipset, I upgraded my rig, if you want to run software update all the same, i would suggest that option. Antoniya001
You guys do have Execute Disable Bit on ENABLED (Sometimes also refered to as NX or ED) in your BIOS ??? (CPU Setup screen) Not having this enabled will cause reboot on vanilla kernel. Antoniya001

(CPU Setup screen) Not having this enabled will cause reboot on vanilla kernel. Antoniya001 You are the man!!! I was trying to run vanilla kernel with both cores for a couple of days but nothing worked. I was on the verge of giving up and just to use one of the core with cpus=1 and then I read your post. And exactly that was the problem. Now I'm running vanilla kernel with both cores ! Cheers mate!
ciambridge
Antoniya001, thank you so much!! i just installed iatkos v4i with vanilla 9.4.0 kernel, only to see that i could only boot with cpus=1 flag!! but your hint made my day!! both cores are working now.. borisbadenov
I have also found that there is a way around dsmos.kext It works great. It is AppleDecrypt.kext. The details can be found... Click Here Basically, install this kext and delete the dsmos. I have also noticed a faster boot time as well. And this will run vanilla kernels.
