After having you guys vote for what my money will be spent, I will go for the Custom OSX Box, so this thread probably will (hopefully) be a little like Bofors...

After his recommendation (THX!) I decided to go for Intel and ordered these parts:

ASUS P5LD2-VM i945G (dual PC-667 DDR2) [i don't need sound input so thats OK]

Intel Pentium-D 830 3.0 GHz Box 2x1MB Dual Core

Connect3D (Retail) X1800XT PCIe 256MB 2xDVI/ViVo

+2 GB RAM

The setup will be completed with my previous Sys Parts, ie:

250 GB Samsung HDD PATA

80 GB Maxtor HDD PATA

Samsung Double Layer DVD Writer

Pioneer Slot in DVD

All put in a black Chieftec Case (I'll put up pics of the case tommorow)

For silence, I plan to water cool the System. The parts arrive first week of february so i hope i can show first progress next week :) .

I forgot: Mouse will be MX 510 @USB and Standart Apple Keyboard

why would you want an intel. i know the new macs use them but that doesnt mean you have to. get an amd fx or an athlon 64 x2 they run cooler and faster then anything intel has out.

Future proofing maybe?

AMD has better gear now but Intel is still an evil corperation bent on Global Silicon Domination.

Beside's Intels chips dont use pins anymore and that makes up totaly for the fact that everything they make sucks.

so here are the pics of the case it currently contains my present system. i'll post pictures of the inside when i begin swapping the components...

i use intel for compatability and i think a p4 d 830 will we powerful enough for a while and powerful enough for the x1800 as well... and amd running cooler doesn't really matter i think since i'm going to water cool the sys...

greetz!

  • 3 weeks later...

phew, today finally the parts arrived, i'm gonna pick em up tommorrow and start building...

btw: instead of for the asus mb and the pentium d 830 i went for:

GigaByte GA-8I945G-MF

Pentium D 820 (Price/Value a lot better here)

can i just install the new parts and try to boot the osx on my hdd? or will i have to reinstall...?

anyway i'm getting itchy right now :D :D

[OT]anybody know if its possible and safe to verclock the D 820?[/OT]

damn, wish i'd caught you in time to suggest you get the Pentium D920, not the 820 -> 65nm process and virtualisation technology would have been yours. i went for the 920 over the 820 as a future-proofing exercise (tho of course they are basically equal for current stuff).

cheers

well what can i say...

assembled the whole thing, inserted my osx dvd, booted from dvd rom (osx even recognizes the add in ide controller) but i always end up in a kernel panic...

since i'm not too good with the error messages, i'm not sure why, it seems as if the fire wire is the problem (1394 is fw i believe...)

i also tried enabling/disabling the nx bit and the ht feature but it just won't boot...

maybe one of you can get more out of the halt screen...

True.dat man, Intel can pull over AMD pretty soon.

Nope. AMD just announced they are gonna support DDR2 800Mhz with Socket AM2. Intel has DDR2 too but AMD has its memory controllers on the CPU(it has for quite some time now). All that extra bandwidth is gonna make the new AMD stuff way faster. If you want to futureproof, go AMD. They are once again, ahead of the game.

sooo....

it booted up finally (actually without re install)...

seems the problem was the add in ide controller after all, which i'm rather sceptic i will be able to get to work, thus i will probably need 2 sata hdds in the near future...

still some things don't seem to work either:

sound (lets see if azalia kext helps)

for the rest just see for yourself if have some suggestions feel free to speak up ;)

thanks for the help folks!

i'm at my parents right now and won't be back before tonight. then i will try some more:

1) disable sound

2) remove add on IDE controller

3) put dvd rom and osx hdd to the mobo IDE channel

4) put only the dvd to the mobo IDE

5) try to install to usb 2.0 hdd

if all this fails:

6) try out IDE/SATA adapter for the hdd's

if this fails as well

7) try out real SATA hdd...

oh well...

wish me luck,

greetz

Tom

+++UPDATE+++

got my system running at the moment:

osx 10.4.3 on PATA hdd

winXP on PATA hdd

NO optical drives (1 IDE channel only)

DISABLED SATA, Sound and Firewire in BIOS

seems fine, too

but now here is the weird thing:

GMA 950:

Chipset Model: GMA 950

Quartz Extreme: Supported

even though it says QE/CI supported the whole system feels kind of unresponsive and slow... the dock for example reacts really slow... no idea why. on the other hand i can change resolution in system prefs and everything, haven't tried flurry screen saver yet...

I#ll download x-bench and put up the results in a few minutes...

+++UPDATE END :)+++
