crackintosh
those of you lookin to build a system right now may want to hold off Core / Price in thousand units (US$) / Features E1200 $53 1.6GHz/512KB L2/800MHz FSB/65W (Dual Core Celeron) Q9300 $266 2.5GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB Q9450 $316 2.66GHz/12MB L2/1333MHz FSB Q9550 $530 2.83GHz/12MB L2/1333MHz FSB E8190 $163 2.66GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB E8200 $163 2.66GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB E8400 $183 3GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB E8500 $266 3.16GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB QX9770 $1,399 3.2GHz, 1600MHz FSB, 12MB cache and TDP of 136W penryn should be in the new mac pros, macbooks, imacs, and rumored subnotebook to be released at MWSF 10.5.2 is rumored to add SSE4 and support for these processors as well as new graphics cards im personally interested in that Q9450 w/the 12MB L2 cache. should be interesting to see benchmarks. this will bring the prices down on non-45nm chips too so a nice quad setup will be cheaper also interested in the X48 chipset which will support higher bus speeds (1333MHz) and DDR3. only drawback is DDR2 will NOT be supported and DDR3 is awfully expensive at the moment
poplars
sounds cool . . . not really happy that SSE3 will soon not be very plausible ( much like SSE2 is now.)
Synaesthesia
E1200 $53 1.6GHz/512KB L2/800MHz FSB/65W (Dual Core Celeron)Q9300 $266 2.5GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB Q9450 $316 2.66GHz/12MB L2/1333MHz FSB Q9550 $530 2.83GHz/12MB L2/1333MHz FSB E8190 $163 2.66GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB E8200 $163 2.66GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB E8400 $183 3GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB E8500 $266 3.16GHz/6MB L2/1333MHz FSB QX9770 $1,399 3.2GHz, 1600MHz FSB, 12MB cache and TDP of 136W Great lineup. The slowest new Core 2 Duo is 2.66ghz, impressive! The new celerons are awesome too. Also coming is an E4700 2.6ghz Allendale!10.5.2 is rumored to add SSE4 and support for these processors as well as new graphics cards We'll see!im personally interested in that Q9450 w/the 12MB L2 cache. should be interesting to see benchmarks. Basically it's slightly faster than a 65nm Conroe, like 2-10%, except for SSE4 video encoding which is way faster, like 100%. Also runs a bit cooler as it has better power management. So not a revolution but a nice update.this will bring the prices down on non-45nm chips too so a nice quad setup will be cheaper This is the best part for me!also interested in the X48 chipset which will support higher bus speeds (1333MHz) and DDR3. only drawback is DDR2 will NOT be supported and DDR3 is awfully expensive at the moment The X48 is like an X38 with FSB1600Mhz support. I want a P35 personally!Wow, what can I say Intel has really impressed with their releases as of late. Simply awesome! I can't wait to build a new rig when this comes around. skyfox
sounds cool . . . not really happy that SSE3 will soon not be very plausible ( much like SSE2 is now.) You won't have to worry about that. Since many Macs have been sold without SSE4 cpus, they will always have to support SSE3 systems. There were never any Macs sold with SSE2 only processors. socal swimmer
There are is always something bigger and better just around the corner. First the 8800Gt, then Penryn, then DDR3 being affordable..... At some point you just have to buckle down and buy whatever is ready now. But those do look pretty cool. Good thing my mobo is compatible! (like i will ever spend the money to upgrade the CPU)
Dr. Hurt
The E8400 looks like a great deal. I can't wait to get my hands on it. 3GHz and 6MB cache for $183??!!
archi386
I just picked up a QX9650 and a GA-P35-DS4 for another project. I'm going to see if OS X will boot on it.
gotoh
Anyone tried an E8xxx or Q9xxx series CPU yet with OS X ?
Allsop
Anyone tried an E8xxx or Q9xxx series CPU yet with OS X ? Yep I'm running OSX on a QX9650... though it works great reboot and shutdown times takes forever and Hardware Monitor doesn't report core temperatures :/... gotoh
thanks, looks interesting anyway (reboot is already broken for me with E6400) Are you using PC_EFI with stock kernel or a patched kernel ?
clv101
With native 1333MHz FSB what does this mean for overclocking? I mean the multipliers are low so to get high overclocks the FSB will have to very high. I mean I have an E4300, it runs at 9x200MHz = 1.8GHz. The 200MHz when quad pumped gives 800MHz. To overclock the 1.8GHz stock to 3.2GHz I just have to up the FSB from 200MHz to 356MHz (1422MHz when quad pumped). No problem at all and below the spec of 800MHz PC6400 RAM. A 78% overclock with no problems. These chips though, based on 1333MHz (333MHz actual) need the FSB to be pushed to almost 600MHz to get a similar 78%. That’s not going to happen! Maybe around 450MHz is the highest we can hope so only a 35% overclock.
gotoh
well, just got back with a little E8200 2,66Ghz, OCed at FSB 1800 (450x4) 3,6Ghz it just works as well as my previous E6400 with stock 9.1 kernel... It already feels a bit smoother than 3,2Ghz E6400 but I hope 10.5.2 with SSE4 optimizations will make it even better ! It's great to have cheap CPU options with very good performances. I'll check if I can OC it even more, but my DDR2 may not handle more than 900Mhz...
