Installing 10.4.3 natively through VMware

I've read some posts about people not being able to install with the patched DVD, and I couldn't either (kept getting SAM I/O and hfs_mountroot errors), so I'm posting this information in the hopes that it will help someone out. This is NOT a step by step tutorial; it doesn't contain the exact commands you need to enter and such, but I expect that anyone who actually needs to use this method has already done extensive research in OS X86 (chain0, diskpart, etc.)

I used the 8f1111a 10.4.3 developer dtk dmg, converted to iso, and patched with JaS's 4.2b patch.

Here's what I did:

First, I used diskpart to create a primary partition of type "AF" in some unallocated space on one of my drives.

Next, I mounted the ISO image of the patched DTK DVD in Daemon-Tools, and then mapped that drive to a newly created VMware machine (VMware's own ISO option won't work with the HFS+ partitions on the DVD). It shouldn't matter what profile you use (I used the FreeBSD one). Most importantly, I told VMware to use the physical hard drive partition I created previously, instead of an image file.

Thus, I could simply boot off the DVD inside VMware, use the Disk Utility to format the partition (NOT the entire disk), and install OS X normally.

After that, I simply had to copy the chain0 file to my boot partition root and add it to my boot.ini. I restarted, and selecting the "Mac OS x86" entry in the Windows bootloader worked perfectly.

This was actually verified by me; I did it on a Dell Dimension 8200 with a 160GB HD containing Windows and a 40GB containing my OS X installation. There was already another data partition on my 40GB, and I was able to keep it intact. I had some trouble when I forgot to enable the second disk in the BIOS (cause it works fine in Windows anyway), and the chainloader wouldn't find OS X, but the entire process should be the same (and easier) for single disk setups.

I was able to install macosx_10.4.3_JaS.1111a.Generic.Patch.V4.2.iso in vmware to an actually physical disc.

I modified my boot.ini file to boot OS X. However when it boots from the hardrive nativley i get the grey screen and the no sign. I waited 20 minutes and the screen does not change. I have a few questions is the above image iso already patched. I believe it is because I can run os x in vmware fine I even saw the JAS patch come up during installation, but can't do it natively. Do I have to do something before it boots natively to get to get past the grey screen. Also is my system causing the problem. my specs are listed below.

P4 2.4 GHZ

ASUS p4sg33 with SIS chipset

1.5 GB ram

ATI 9000

Sound blaster Audigy

I have some problems with osx10.4.3 as it doesn't install completely .

So, I'd be interested by an install trough VMware , but, I'm not a great specialist of all this stuff .

So, I downloaded WMware player, Daemon Tools, and PCBSD as I know that WMware player needs a VM configuration .

Now, could you be more precise and describe precisely what kind of actions I have to perform ?

What do you mean by mapping the drive , etc ???

It could very helpful for everybody and you 'll see it's often a pleasure to tramsmit one's knowledge to the masses .

you need vmware workstation to create a virtual machine... not vmware player.. (i'm pretty sure about this i think)

this method worked perfectly for me.

A8N-SLI Deluxe

Athlon64 3700+

2GB DDR

40GB PATA (other drives too, this is where I installed osx)

NV 7800GTX (no support)

10.4.3 8f1111g vmware and native. (JaS)

Does anybody get a DMA not enabled error? I tried enabling it in Windows XP SP2 but I still get the error when trying to install from mounted daemon drive. The install gets past the gray screen to the blue screen then the virtual closes itself.

@coolbgdog

You need to use daemon tools to mount the iso and then point VMware towards that drive, VMware doesn't like the iso...

My problem...

I've created a 10gb partition on my drive using diskpart -> create partition primary id=af and told VMware to use that partition (only) but when I get to the disk utilities the partitions are greyed out and I can't mount them, I get an error saying run first aid, I do, and I get an error on that as well.

All help greatly appreciated

I had the same problem. It helped to simply perform "Erase" on that partition. After that, it was mounted.

I have been looking for this tutorial for a long time. I did exactly as mentioned and now i get chain booting error. it is on a primary partition with id=af. Which i created using diskpart.

I also went in fdisk and made it active, but says error loading operating system.

my VMware installation works fine. it just bothers me that the performance is really low since it's running within xp.

i managed to get the dual boot screen up but it's not really running. i can select "Mac OS", but whenever i try to press enter, it jumps back to XP, restarting the countdown. anybody having the same problem?

Do you think it's possible to natively install a patched 10.4.3 ISO through disk part, then dd, then doing the whole chain0 boot.ini process, instead of using VMWare? I installed 10.4.1 through dd instead of VMWare and it worked like a charm, and much easier if you ask me.

Thanks guys.

Hello,

i don't understand why with the same settings than you, VmWare is saying : "no bootable cd..." and refuses to start osX ?????

Is there an additional thing to do or is it my computer ???

I have also not been able to get VMWare to boot from the ISO I've mounted with Daemon Tools. I can boot from the 10.4.6 x86 disc, but I am seeing the "There were errors with the installation, please restart" as many others have been seeing as well.

I've also tried to install this on another Intel laptop machine here, with the same results.

Why does VMware say that there's no bootable CD found? Can anyone help??
