SkyZ
alright, after another 2 hrs of trying, EFI+vanilla mach_kernel (actually from my MacBook Pro) works!!!! The trick is, boot the machine with ToH Leo DVD, UNMOUNT the system drive, run ./startupfiletool /dev/rdiskxsy ./boot (where diskxsy is your system drive) from an USB thumb drive, mount your system drive back and replace the mach_kernel file with vanilla one, reboot, and viola~~~~ Your machine is ready for Software Update without patching~~~~ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/71317-guide-gigabyte-ga-g33m-ds2r-with-leo/#findComment-505929 Share on other sites
thysm00
Nice guide!!!! Did you also try the v4 EFI patch? Are you experiencing the same booting time issues as i do? http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=71338 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/71317-guide-gigabyte-ga-g33m-ds2r-with-leo/#findComment-505976 Share on other sites

I been fighting with my board (same as urs) to get EFI to work. When I tried V3 it wouldnt boot but with V4 it works but only with patched kernel and patched kexts, with original kernel with the ACPIPlatform.kext file loaded I get CPU panics saying something about not being able to load the driver for the platform. SkyZ
Okay, I'm using PC EFI V3 as Netkas told us V4 only add multi-platform boot (Windoz, Linux.... etc whatever you like) and I don't need it....There's actually one drawback with Leo, not sure is it vanilla mach kernel, everytime I reboot, getta use verbose mode instead of grey bg/black apple, otherwise it'll be panic.......Three more things, i) to deploy EFI, YOU MUST BOOT WITH ToH DVD AND UNMOUNT SYSTEM DRIVE. ii) In addition, about boot up time, it's swifty, less than 15 sec. in my case, but shut down might take more than a minute sometime (system halt, but still hear fans spinning......). iii) For those who use AHCI, do you guys get the external HDD icon instead of internal HDD? Looks like OSX treats all HDD on AHCI as e-SATA...... thysm00
So we don't have the same issues with booting and shutdown times, this is kind of strange... at shutdown i only get my wallpaper and a spinnig wheel like the one at boot. But when this is off, all the fans also stops. For the icons, i get the same and i don't like it. I never tried a e-sata drive but i think osx would use those ones. Anyway i can change it easily. SkyZ
After some twisting in BIOS, finally, no need to get in the system by -v and WAKE UP FROM SLEEP DOES WORK!!!!! Mouse click and keyboard won't wake up the machine, but when I press on the power button once (just like what we did to wake up Windoz XP laptop), fans start spinning and everything back online in 30 sec~~~~ If you don't need FireWire, I can claim that this mobo is the 100% truly, fully working one. thysm00
Good to see that it works!! Can you post your bios settings so we can also get the wake up from sleep? I definitely have to try this EFI patch... Do you know a way to disable firewire in bios? Maybe this could speed up booting time? And did you try to overclock? SkyZ
Okay, here's my setting in BIOS: CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) = disabled CPU EIST Function (that's actually SpeedStep) = disabled Virtualisation Technology = disabled Init Display First = PEG ('cause I'm using nVidia 7600GS) ACPI Suspend Type = S3 (STR) Soft-Off by PWR-BTTN = Instant-Off HPET Mode = 64-bit mode Power On by Mouse = Enabled Power On by Keyboard = Enabled That's it, for the rest, just leave it as default. For FireWire, it's essential, I get two 2.5" & one 3.5" ext. FW HDD, an ext. DVD burner, and a pretty expensive (US$100) FW hub, so FW interface is a must to me........... (Anyway, even on real MacPro, people are having problem with add on FW controller card once upgraded to Leo....) About O/C, I tried to do it on a brand new Pentium II cartridge almost 10 yrs ago (which cost me over US$200) and it dead within 5 min.... So I'll never do O/C again........ thysm00
Thanks, i have already the same bios setting. For firewire i have a 10$ pci firewire card wich works well in tiger, maybe you should also try this solution. i have not tried it yet but i will. Just one thing, do you see the firewire interface in networks settings under syteme preferences? I do and that's why i thought it worked. And if i boot with -v, i see a message telling something about security and firewire, i don't remember exactly what. Maybe there's only a little plist edit to make it work. SkyZ
I cannot get terminal to access my thumb drive... Its mounted but i cant figure out how to get terminal to access that drive. What steps can i take to get it functioning??? Make sure you've your thumb drive plugged in before boot up the machine, once you're in terminal, type: diskutil list That's the command to check where your system drive is (usuallu disk0s1, but sometime it doesn't) To access your thumb drive, type: cd /Volumes/your_thumb_drive ls <-- that's to check is it really in your thumb drive now cd iamefi <-- assume you've PC EFI stuffs in a folder called iamefi ./startupfiletool /dev/rdiskxsy ./boot <-- rdiskxsy is your system drive Thanks, i have already the same bios setting. For firewire i have a 10$ pci firewire card wich works well in tiger, maybe you should also try this solution. i have not tried it yet but i will. And if i boot with -v, i see a message telling something about security and firewire, i don't remember exactly what. Maybe there's only a little plist edit to make it work. Well...... Since I'm using a modified PowerMac G5 case, there's no room to put in an expansion card......... In system Profiler, yes, it said there's FW @ 400Mb/s, but in verbose mode, there's a "FW unable to determine secure mode blahblahblah"........ Also, as I said, real MacPro users with Leo + FW add on card also waiting for a solution from Apple (same FW unable to determine secure mode shxt)........ thysm00
Sorry, i did not understand what you wrote about the macpros... Maybe we'll get this firewire to work too only with the 10.5.1 update. thysm00
Thanks also to thysm00 for your thread on this board.. it helped too Thank you! i was almost thinking that it would have been useless writing it By the way i have some great news too: I installed the pcEFI thing (v4) and it works!!! But i followed this guide: http://www.digitmemo.com/articles/734/howt...-in-hackintosh/ and after patching with the usb key trick that skys explained, i got an enless reboot ... Anyway booting with the kernel flag after hitting F8 at boot: mach_kernel.patched made my install bootable. I don't know why but i decided to try to upgrade to 10.5.1 and IT WORKED, no more kernel flags, i have a fully working 10.5.1 install thanks to netkas and his efi. Geekbench is showing me model:G33-dS2!!! So i think there's a problem with the mach_kernel from the tutorial, and maybe that's why skyz gets it to work, he used the mach_kernel from his macbook. It also seems that my Xbenchs scores increased i went from 106 to 110, but i don't know if it's a lot... I also decreased boot time by disabling firewire in bios but i'll try to see if it works under 10.5.1. Only problem is that now i get the same issue as skyz: the computer seems to shut down but the fans are still spinning for about 1 min. Did someone find a way not to get that? pcfreek14
I have tried every way i could possibly find to get the ToH install to boot. Every method ends up with kernel panic. Has anyone else experienced this?? Also could someone please post or email me their ionetworking.kext and network config plists. My only other options is to use the Flat image which works perfect except the LAN is not automatically detected and i cannot get it to activate. thysm00
Files sent i hope these are the ones you need, i was unsure of "network config plists". Hope it'll work. Just one thing, i had the same issues (kernel panic) when i tried to overclock my cpu... And maybe you should also try to boot with -f it'll reload the extensions at boot (you can insert it in the kernel flags in com.apple.boot.plist). I had the same exact problem on my first mobo with toh. You really should try. Yup, thats the prob when you use the unmoded kernel. Just for a peaceful life and being able to shut down, restart and sleep my computer ok, I use theV4 efi and the following kernel http://rapidshare.com/files/70599776/mach_kernel I'm still recognised as a Mac profiler and though i'm not running original kernel It runs like a dream What did you guys use to make sound work? thysm00
Yup, thats the prob when you use the unmoded kernel. i was using the unmodded kernel from the mentionned tutorial and this one was the problem. I now use the unmodded kernel from apple 10.5.1 and it runs really great! What did you guys use to make sound work? Just use the one i talk about here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=71338 It simply works and as i wrote, don't forget to delete azaliaaudio.kext, it'll give you spdif mic, stereo out and so on... prototype_sx
I too upped to 10.5.1 and it ran great except for the shutdown and sleep and restart problems. I rather shut down and sleep etc than run stock 10.5.1.kernel (whats the advantages there?) aqua-mac
Hi Guys, I have the same board, firewire works though. I am using Leo 10.5.1 & netkas EFI V4. Sleep works perfectly, Shutdown about 50% of the time & 50% of the time the HDD's shutdown but the fans keep spinning. Restart not working, however it was working when was on 10.5 with the modified kernel.
