Leopard Audio Problem - ALC889A Chipset

Hey guys, after countless hours of work i finally got Leopard installed on my computer (Gigabyte P35 DS3R, E6600). The Natit and LAN drivers worked perfectly without having to modify anything. I am, however, having a great deal of trouble trying to get my audio (ALC889A) to work. I've read all the forums which all say the same thing; download alc889a.zip (ALCinject.kext and AppleHDA.kext) and then copy them into extensions and go to terminal and type:

sudo -s

sudo chmod -R 775 /System/Library/Extensions/ALCinject.kext

sudo chmod -R 775 /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/ALCinject.kext

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

 

After that i delete Extensions.mkext and reboot. When i reboot i get the error that says kexts were not installed properly. This is strange because when i had tiger installed on this exact same system i followed the same steps and audio worked beautifully. Has something changed since Tiger? Is the kext installation method different in Leopard? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 

EDIT: fixed! turns out all i had to do was create a password.

It is the same method installing .kexts. Next time try doing following:

chmod ...

chown ...

kextload -t (this -t is to see if kext loads sucsesfuly)

 

On reboot boot Leo width -F

 

I think that should help. (it is working on my Leo)

Let me tell you what worked for me! I installed the 889a kexts and got no audio, but with them installed, I installed Cmedia 8738 drivers and ALL ins and outs now work on my 889a card on my g33 gigabyte board! I wound up trying those drivers cause i bought a cheap card based on the cmedia and noticed digital out and the card i bought didnt have any I removed the card and selected built in speakers as output and its been working ever since! I'll upload the kexts i have when i get home

 

It really works though cause i have reinstalled them at least 6 times trying to resize the darn 15gb partition and its worked every time lol

That zip contains the files and instructions I used to get it to work. I had to do the CMI8738PCIAudioDriver instructions as root and it worked. I dragged the .sh file to a terminal window and ran it then followed the instructions in the text file. Reboot and you should have sound!

Yes! Thx a lot! Got the alc889a on a P35-DS3R working with your driver.

It also shows me a digital output now

Done on 10.5.1 efi6 and ToH sleep kernel

I can confirm it has worked on a Gigabyte P35-DS3... i dunno why it worked but it did.

Just install CMI8738PCIAudioDriver kext in the usual way with the ALCinject.kext and AppleHDA.kext and the sound started working.

I have the GA-P35C-DS3 with the ALC889A sound chip.

 

No luck, this it what I did:Using Kext Helper I installed: AppleHDA.kext and ALVinject.kext.

Then using AppleHDAPatcherv1.20 I installed: alv888.txt (okay, I now know that was the wrong file...).

Then as it says above I installed CMI8738PCIAudioDriver.kext (again with Kext Helper).

 

Any advice on what I can do?So far no sound and no sound Input or Output devices listed in System Preferences.

I'm using Leopard 10.5.1 (Kalyway).

A great utility for installing kext files is kext helper. Here is a link:

Had the same prob with getting errors whith installing kext files into the extensions folder with leo and this prog saved me hours of stress. You must have a login password in order for it to work however (easily set in the system preferences). I think it is designed only for installing kexts into your extensions folder but I could be wrong on this.

i've tried all the above suggestion, but my sound still doesn't work properly. the weird thing is that my rear satellites have sound, (in a 6.1 system), but the others have not.

 

i'm running ideneb v1.3 10.5.5

I got this working one time on my P45 DS3R, but the next time I rebooted it wouldn't work again. I tried reinstalling the kext and nothing. I did download the updates, which included itunes and java, not the 2.5.6 update. Is it possible that was the problem.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I finally got the ALC889A sound to work with iDeneb v1.3 Leopard OSX86 10.5.5

My board is a Gigabyte EP35-DS3 rev.2.1

 

Here is what I did:

 

1) remove any trace of ALCinject and AppleHDA you might have from previous attempts.

to do this, simply delete ALCinject.kext and AppleHDA.kext from System/Library/Extensions

a password will prompt.

 

2) download the attached zip file.

it contains a new AppleHDA.kext and a HDAEnabler.kext (ALCinject is NOT needed anymore).

 

3) install AppleHDA.kext and HDAEnabler.kext

for this I used OSX86Tools from pcwiz

 

 

4) After that, in OSX86Tools i chose

 

Clear Extensions Cache, then

Set Extensions permissions

 

5) Reboot and tada! the System Profiler shows an Intel HDA present under Audio.

it also seems to recognize the S/P-DIF Out, although I cant test it cause i only have headphones.

 

The microphone worked immediately.

One thing though, I had to plug the headphones on the front of the case.

Try around several connectors until you get the right one.

Haha, after many many hours wasted all I had to do was plug the audio into the front headphone jack. I forgot they even existed!
