Yeah, i have a 1ghz FW800 Powermac G4 with no hard drive, RAM, graphics card or optical drive, i bought it as a project to just {censored} around with and stuff about 6 months ago and then didnt do anything with it, mainly because of the price of the components.

I have been looking at getting the 1.8ghz dual MAXPower processor, but $700 is {censored} steep.

As for the graphics, im going to flash a 7800GS.

The RAM and hard drive/optical drive are really cheap, but the processor is really throwing me off, i dunno whether to just keep the single 1ghz and upgrade everything else, i dont really know whether its worth the $700 or not.

Any opinions?

Yeah, I don't know...For $700 it's a bit too much. I'd then rather get a Mac mini or go the hack route with Core 2 Duo, for better value for money. Keep it as it is rather, and put together another rig, my 2c

100% agree. Check on ebay you can find cheaper G4 CPU upgrades than that. (New & Used)

I would say get a Mini too but from the video card you plan to add to the G4, sounds like it wouldn't be an option for you.

I would look for a cheaper 1.2~1.4GHz dual CPU as the rest of the components are too slow to take advantage of 2X1.8. Wouldn't bother with a 7800GS either, the computer is too cpu/memory/hd limited. Try a 9800pro instead; easier flash, lots cheaper and will provide all the grunt you'd need on that machine. Which will be very usable, for day to day duties and light gaming from halo/SWBF/stubs era. That way you'd keep your budget way under $500; after that, it's diminishing returns IMHO.

I never felt the 6800 Ultra was wasted on my old dp Quicksilver... It ran Battlefront nice and smoothly at 1680x1050, something it would never have done with a 9800 pro

Oh, absolutely... but I think we are talking about 2nd (3rd?) computer to kick around not their primary machine. So it's a question of whether it's worth the $$$$ now. Not to mention that he will have to find a G70 core iirc, might be hard nowadays. Ah, the good old days of trying to get {censored} to run on our ppcs...

My only problem with going to eBay is that you aren't 100% sure if the upgrade will work in your system. It will take a lot of research if you want to go through eBay.

Otherwise, ALWAYS REMEMBER that a shiny new Mac mini is $599 US before doing any upgrades. If you're spending more than this amount, buy a new Mac.

Yes, the Ati graphics-card that I put in my G4 was worth it too. I can play Prey and Doom3 if I want to. :(

Seems lately there is a single seller selling the majority of these of ebay. He has a decent page that lists the machines it works on (exactly) and he also links directly to the manufacturer's web site to verify the data also.

You are right, never trust ADs alone and verify all information yourself.
