GBK.Xscape
I am looking to buy a hard drive for Video and Audio editing/recording. There are three main brands that are there, LaCie, G-Tech, and Western Digital. Is one better than the other? I currently have a Western Digital 250 GB My Book and have mad very very minor problems with it and I am satisfied overall with it but I want the buy one that will last and not give me any or little problems. kle500
Best HDD for performance is Raptor hands down for system drive, then you will need any other big HDD for storing data. Other choice that i have try is WD AAKS series, which is really fast. I also have Spinpoint Samsung HDD'S, but these are much worst in Osx than the WD's I haven't try other brands so i can't say anything for them. But once i have installed Osx on one of my Raptor's for test, the difference was obvious. solaar
I don't even consider dedicating audio to anything other than Seagate (16MB cache of course). They're the most silent ones I know, which is fairly important in a recording studio. They also behave flawlessly with video. WD on the other hand, well... others may be luckier but out of the 4 HDs that crapped out on me in 10 years there were 3 Western Digital... (one Maxtor) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64744-which-hard-drive-to-buy/#findComment-458566 Share on other sites

If their test results are accurate I'm wondering why most DAW manufacturers prefer Seagate. Are they all delusional? Metrogirl
Seagate or WD. The newer WDs are pretty quiet and reliable. Don't touch Maxtor unless you want to replace your drive the day after the warranty runs out. There was a thread on this subject a while back and Maxtor came out as the universally worst drive. Maxtor are now made by Seagate, but classed as the 'value option' which sort of suggests they're not so well engineered as Seagate-badged offerings. Just my 2c. ~pcwiz
I use Samsung SP2504C 250GB. Works well for me on Windows. solaar
Find another one to disprove mine. at least i providied something to back up Here are two more comparisons. The Barracudas are apparently not the quietest anymore (they used to be but the other manufacturers must have improved on that end) but they're not the noisiest either. The most relevant factor in a studio is the permanent rotation noise. The Seagates have good figures here. And although the WDs are quieter, as I mentioned before, from my own experience and at least five other musicians/studio owners I know, as for reliability especially under permanent heavy strain, WD are far from being the best. IMHO they are to avoid altogether unless you just use them outside intense I/O, like admin stuff or backups. http://techreport.com/articles.x/10516/13 http://www.behardware.com/articles/480-12/...ard-drives.html Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64744-which-hard-drive-to-buy/#findComment-460500 Share on other sites

solaar
Your links are from 2006 and 2003 respectively, i think you might be going on some old data there. Yea, you got me on that one Here's a more recent one. http://www.storagereview.com/Testbed4Compare.sr Check out 'Testbed IV' on idle noise. It seems that it's basically a moot point as it looks like a mixed bag throughout the different models. We'll see in a couple of years in terms of 'who's got the least bodies in the wardrobe...'. If WD will excel on that end I'll revise my judgement Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/64744-which-hard-drive-to-buy/#findComment-460719 Share on other sites
gloria
I've always been loyal to LaCie...because they've always been very reliable to me...never let me down..However today (for several reasons -mainly urgency and proximatey to my house) I bought my first Seagate.I never heard anything terrible about them and it was a good deal. Yea, you got me on that one :DHere's a more recent one.http://www.storagereview.com/Testbed4Compare.srCheck out 'Testbed IV' on idle noise. It seems that it's basically a moot point as it looks like a mixed bag throughout the different models. We'll see in a couple of years in terms of 'who's got the least bodies in the wardrobe...'. If WD will excel on that end I'll revise my judgement that's strange that they didn't test LaCie. Are LaCies known primarily as a Mac HD...is that why? solaar
that's strange that they didn't test LaCie. Are LaCies known primarily as a Mac HD...is that why? LaCie are primarily known for their external drives and backup storage. The people I know who have them in their rig are all Win/Linux users. btw as you mention Mac HD, I sometimes wish SCSI had become more widespread and affordable. I never followed the history about the why's and how's but it's a shame the mainstream industry turned its back to one of the best interfaces ever engineered, probably even THE best for music and multimedia. sarahbau
that's strange that they didn't test LaCie. Are LaCies known primarily as a Mac HD...is that why? It's because LaCie doesn't make hard drives. They make enclosures. They used to use Quantum hard drives when they sold SCSI drives. Now at least some, if not all LaCie drives are Maxtor. kle500
Right now i am using the: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM and i have way better behavior than the: SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM I have used both as a system drive and the WD is a lot better. Best results i had was with a Raptor drive. And i don't think you will be able to use Software Raid with Hack's. Are you going to use a single drive? If yes my opinion from what i have used is, go with the AAKS ones. If you need more than one drive, again i would go with the AAKS, and for storage i would use the Samsung ones. Again if price is not a problem, i would use, Raptor as a System drive, and for storage the Samsung's. sarahbau
I have two 500GB Samsung SpinPoint Ts - one SATA and one PATA. They both work fine. I don't have any other 500GB drives to compare to, but I do have four 250GB 5400RPM Maxtor drives that have been running without problems for almost 4 years now. minnie
I use WD pretty much all the time now. Audio/ Video very heavy use and no problems whatsoever. I just remembered that I have an old 10gb IDE drive bought with a G4 when they first came out. It's slow as hell, a laughable 10gb and completely useless for pretty much anything, but it runs just fine still. It seems pretty straightforward to me. Seagate or WD drives as fast and modern as you can afford. Try to spread the workload evenly between your drives. Do a reasonable amount of disk maintenance, the odd reformat. If the drive shows any sign of loosing data, despite a low level reformat, chuck it. They're dirt cheap now.
