Superfetch used to hog large amounts of RAM whenever it was active.

... I think Superfetch helps a lot.

vLite removed:

UAC

Indexing

Windows Defender

IE7

Why?! Windows Defender's Software explorer is very helpful in disabling various annoyances. I mainly use it to disable startup software (like QuickTime, yuck). Windows Defender's spyware protection is pretty adequate as well. And Indexing, why on earth would you disable that! Would you disable spotlight?

I've not noticed any detriment to using it, which is why I left it in my install. I think some people are put off by the high memory usage and assume they need to buy more RAM to use it. However, it seems to be pretty good at releasing RAM as its needed.

I find msconfig quite satisfactory for disabling startup programs, and Spybot or SUPERAntiSpyware are better than that always-on resource hog Microsoft try to push on Vista users, and the constant taskbar pop-us drive me nuts!

No, but spotlight doesn't cause constant disk access, slow everything down to the speed of molasses and double boot & shutdown times like Vista's joke of an FBC indexing system.

I have to agree Superfetch is only beneficial unless you have less than 768mb of RAM. As for the other stuff - apart from the initial Hard Drive meltdown after installing Vista I haven't noticed any excess disk activity that wasn't caused by me in some way so I think the Indexing Service is wise to keep.

Oh wow, I had no idea the indexing caused the slloow startup/shutdown times. msconfig is ok, but it doesnt neatly categorize everything like Windows Defender. Anyway, now that I know what youve told me I can see why you would disable Indexing.

I disabled it as well. The only place I see UAC being good would be like a library or something when you dont want people unknowingly screwing something up.

I agree with ya.
