Prawker
Due to several legal issues with AOL and their AOL instant messenger (AIM), Gaim is now known as Pidgin. libgaim will be libpurple, and gaim-text will be Finch. http://www.pidgin.im/index.php?id=177 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/47807-gaim-is-now-pidgin/ Share on other sites
A Nonny Moose
I was wondering when this would happen, as it was rather confusing to call it gAIM to begin with. Prawker
Interesting. I wonder why those chose Pidgin. From Wikipedia: A pidgin, or contact language, is the name given to any language created, usually spontaneously, out of two or more languages as a means of communication between speakers of different tongues, and usually a simplified form of one of the languages. Pidgins have simplified grammars and few synonyms, serving as auxiliary contact languages. They are learned as second languages rather than natively. Lostgame
I think this is {censored}. What's wrong with calling it gAIM? >_> Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/47807-gaim-is-now-pidgin/#findComment-342962 Share on other sites
Prawker
Read the above Lawsuit... "AIM" Is a registered Trademark of AOL, and gAIM sounds to much like "AIM" apparently, and AOL has to act like a second grader about it. Universe_JDJ
And the fact that before the name "Gaim" it was called GTK+ AOL Instant Messenger... Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/47807-gaim-is-now-pidgin/#findComment-343883 Share on other sites

Mebster
Read the above Lawsuit... "AIM" Is a registered Trademark of AOL, and gAIM sounds to much like "AIM" apparently, and AOL has to act like a second grader about it.The two don't sound anything alike. There' a big G sound at the begining of one of them and not in the other. I would understand if it was a silent G or something but it's not. to be honest i never even noticed the relevance between the 2 until i read this thread lawl.neither did I. This lawsuit is so stupid I can't believe people are allowed to make this rubbish up. .ark
AIM - no major improvements since 1998, except to include adware, spyware, and AOL-premium related content. gaim- new versions every few months, completely implements the OSCAR protocols (AIM doesn't, oddly), and does logging. That's the condensed version. Personally, I'm a fan of trillian. I like keeping my contact list simple (no buddy icons), and gaim's interface is just too bulky for my tastes (also, you can't change it much). I can see why AOL wanted the disassociation with gaim/Pidgin though. gaim makes AIM look really bad.
