DrSupachicken
Hi Guys, Do you think a system based upon a Intel D945GNTLKR MB and P4 3.0GHz is to old? It just seems to be so compatible, and now affordable. The argument that I would put forward about it still being solid is that, it is almost identical to the 1st Gen. iMac except of the CPU of course, and the iMacs will undoubtedly be running leopard so I figure this box will be as good a chance as any other. If I do need more power I will always be able to put a newer 775 compatible CPU in it and upgrade from GMA950 to a dedicated graphics card. Opinions definitely welcome guys. Cheers. marliwahoo
It's fine. But...... Why not a ASUS P5LD2-VM $64.99 and a PentiumD 915 $88. (both Newegg / open box) This MB will support Core2 (if you get one later) and you can overclock. The 945gntlkr will do neither. The Asus MB still has GMA950 and is just as OSX compatible as the 945gntlkr. The dual core pentium d is in the same price range as a P4. Price is around $150 for MB, CPU and graphics. DrSupachicken
Hi, Thanks for your replys. I'm based in Australia and the price difference between the two boards in onlt $50 so I might go with the intel just becuase it seems to compatible and there is a couple different things with the asus ie. ide support that just scare me off a little bit, i'll go down to the shop and order in a board when these public holidays are over. Thanks for your help. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/47726-d945gntlkr-p4-30ghz/#findComment-343052 Share on other sites
zedzed
I am running this mobo with 1 gig ram and P4 series 641 CPU (3.2 GHz) It is more than good enough for my needs. Don't buy more computer than you need. ... I am thinking of upgrading video card. sarahbau
Don't buy more computer than you need. I disagree. If you buy more than you need, you won't need to upgrade it as often. For example you might be able to save a little bit by buying a motherboard that uses DDR2 533 RAM, because it and the RAM will be cheaper, but one that uses DDR2 800 will carry you longer (not only because of the RAM, but newer CPUs will likely be compatible with it but not the other one).
