rvd
Hi ! I want to thank all the kind people who generously offer their time and talent to the OSX86 project. After only just over a month of living with my HP Pavilion dv1000 OSX 10.4.8, I was so convinced that mac was right for me, that i bought a macbook pro 15". It arrived today, and I am like really really happy. I am also really really thankful to those who helped me get OSX on my sucky PC. Not sure this is the right post for this topic... Anyway, thanks...Richard Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/47503-thanks-got-a-mac-now/ Share on other sites

Vipersfate
It's always nice to see someone come to the mac side! I bought mine a few weeks ago (I think today is the 2 week aniversary lol) Welcome to the owners club. And I hate you cause I couldn't afford a Pro...I wanted one...I really did. But I am happy with my MacBook 1.83Ghz Merom 1GB RAM 60GB HDD (160GB coming in the mail this week) Gratz! Fischerms80
I had looked at the 1300.00 MACBOOK vs. the Toshiba Satellite A135-S4487. Money talked. Toshiba was 1150 at Bestbuy (at time of purchase) with a T5500 Core Duo 2 (MAC is slightly faster with 4mb L2 which is good for around 10% performance differential between 2mb & 4mb L2 Cache), 220gb drive space (100 + 120) and 2gb ram. 10/100/1000 ethernet, 4 USB 2 ports, 1 firewire 400, DVD-RW, 15.4" LCD, Same Video as the MACbook - GMA950. Intel 802a/b/g wireless. I have Vista on the 100gb primary Drive and OS X 10.4.9 on the 120gb. Sound only works thru the speakers - no head phones and the wireless is not functional under OS X ( no loss as use the wired networking anyway). Primary internet box is an old Powermac G4 Gigabit Dual G4 500mhz cpu's. Apple does have some nice hardware but the price premium over what is out there on the low end is not worth it. Detosx
I used to skin my XP setup with my friend flyakite's system mod to make it look like OS X. I was worried Apple legal would jump on the whole skinning thing and shut down what was essentially one of the best free advertising campaigns in history of advertising, but thankfully they were selective in who they jumped on. I wanted SO much to buy a Macbook but when I actually got some hands on experience with it, I was dissapointed. The screen is lovely, really lovely but too small. The case is so cheap, well made but so cheap and the leading edge is quite sharp against your palm. Frankly, I would have bought one just for the battery life and the coolness factor, were it not for the fact that new screen technology (LED) is literally around the corner and Leopard is coming out equally soon... but the timing was wrong. I bought a very cheap HP dv6205us, swallowed hard, shelled out for Tiger OS X (which remains in its unopened box) and installed JAS. Of course I don't have a real Apple; though I have wireless, ethernet and sound working, the card reader doesn't work and the battery life isn't great... but I do have the big screen. You know what though? The earlier posters here are otherwise right; when the new version of the MacBook/pro comes out, I want one. Meantime, and I'm talking desktop computers, I'm going to keep banging the drum that Steve and co just don't seem to hear - bring out iMacs that the user can upgrade beyond just memory. Fair enough Apple are in the hardware business rather than trying to sell OS X to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Beige Box, but Apple are no longer a small company with a small staff; it can be done while retaining Apple's exceptional 100% compatibility status. Headrush69
Apple does have some nice hardware but the price premium over what is out there on the low end is not worth it. A hardware vs. hardware comparison between different OSes is only part of a complete comparison. You're not just buying hardware but also paying for style and a complete user experience. You could say that doesn't matter to you and be correct, but to some, these things do matter. Looking at how well used Macs generally retain their value compared to PC systems, it would appear many people do care. Vipersfate
Another great feature about having a Mac is the fact that you don't have to worry about stupid things happening. (Such as my Hackintosh's ethernet going in and out), and with the Mac, you don't have to worry about windows, at all.. Headrush69 makes a good point, plus when you go into an Apple store the customer service experience is exceptional. You feel you are part of something, as opposed to being in a department and harrassed by a salesperson working on commision. The people who work there tend to be enthusiasts with excellent knowledge, great enthusiasm and an interest in you as an individual; you get a conversation rather than being spoon fed syrup puddings, if you will. Plus there are supplemental classes that you can sit in on, on how to use the software and so on (saw this in the San Francisco store). Sure I have Hackintoshes but there is a good reason why I bought a Mac Mini and will buy from Apple in the future.
