Swad Posted March 19, 2007 Share Posted March 19, 2007 Hey all. After reading this thread, I thought I'd give you a little more info on the recent happenings. First, let me state that the site is not falling apart. We've got a ton of great plans for the near future, and if you thought the first 2 years of this community were great, just wait until Leopard is released. For those who don't know, sHARD left us a few weeks back and other announced a few days ago that he was following suit. I have, since the beginning of the site, considered both of these guys to be my good friends... and I still do. Running a forum like this is a challenge. As a student of communication, I can tell you that I've learned just how difficult online communication really is. You can't see someone's face or hear the inflection in their voice. Rumors fly like paper airplanes in a middle school classroom, and many never come to land. All of this builds up to latent tension, misunderstandings, and drama. I've spent most of the last month arbitrating these tensions between folks on IRC, the forum, and everywhere else. It's difficult to point fingers and say that one person started something or is at fault, due to the nature of the way these relationships work. Sometimes you're fine working with someone until so many things accumulate, and then you realize you're not happy anymore. Without going into the personal details of each situation, I'll just say that the misunderstandings and tensions I mentioned above came to a head, and sHARD>>, then other, decided that the weren't at the place in their lives when online tensions were worth their free time. It's a perfectly legitimate conclusion, and I respect them for it. We're all still on speaking terms. Having said that, I just want you to know that the community is as strong as its ever been. sHARD>> and other were giants here, and we'll miss them (although they'll still be around). Mebster Posted March 19, 2007 Share Posted March 19, 2007 Although I appreciate you taking the time to address the issue, this actually explains no more than what most of us already knew, which is that tensions exist between the staff. I'm not looking for you to point fingers but an elaborations on the tensions would be helpful so that we actually do feel as part of a community and not it's subjects. A worry I have is that by loosing sHARD>> and other we've lost a lot in a short space of time. I'm talking from a rational point of view here (not emotional). Both these guys had a great deal of influence on the site and it's maintenance and build. other in particular was a front man for all of us really. Replacing one is hard but two is worrying. Just let me say that it would be easier to loose a mod or a guru than these guys and still expect a bright future. I apologize if you didn't learn much from the above post, but out of respect for all parties involved I don't want to go into a lot of detail regarding their decisions for leaving. Here's about the most detailed timeline I can give you. About a month ago, some of the latent tension on IRC exploded into a situation with a lot of anger due to misunderstandings on both sides. It was after this that sHARD decided to leave. Since Other is a good friend of sHARD's and was sad to see him go, sHARD's leaving made him question whether or not he wanted to stick around as well. He chose to move on. I hope this helps explain the situation a bit. The whole staff isn't jumping ship - it's the culmination of well over year's worth of problems coming to a head that, despite my best efforts, I couldn't prevent. We run this forum in our spare time, so it's perfectly understandable that an admin who dedicates a lot of time to the maintenance of the site one day realizes that he should move on. However, we're adjusting and filling their roles from other places, which won't be easy initially, but things will continue to move smoothly. I promise. I have to say having the additional information you've just given does put me at more ease. I just was worried that there was some form of division being created between the staff and that the reason for the division was a sinister one (lol). I understand work load out side the forum is building up (as it is here in the UK) and so I appreciate it. This is a valid concern. Both guys were a huge influence around here. However, we're adjusting and filling their roles from other places, which won't be easy initially, but things will continue to move smoothly. I promise. I can't say I didn't see other leaving after sHARD>> left. Hope the staff make up and they come back home. And for anyone else who's deciding to leave. Don't. Indeed. InsanelyMac is a community that's larger than any one member. That's what's so great about being here: as a family we hurt when we lose an important member, but it's larger than all of us and will continue to go on as strong as it did before.
